Posting shamelessly for traffic.

I've been looking for a new mattress for months now and am at the stage where I'm waking up in pain every morning and not really getting a good night's sleep without being drugged to the gills. I do have issues with my neck meaning that I need a specific type of mattress with plenty of support. I found one I like in a well known but expensive store but it is nearly twice the budget I set myself! £800. That is just the mattress, no base and only a small double. They also charge £80 for a "care plan" instead of having a guarantee. The manufacturer's warranty is only 1 year. They do have a comfort guarantee though where you keep it for a month and if it isn't comfortable you can swap it for another and pay the excess.

I do have the money but I have a couple of other expensive outgoings in the next few months and am wondering if IABU to spend this much on it. Other stores do have similar for half the price and free delivery with 5 year warranty but I don't drive and they are difficult to get to. Would take me a good hour just to get to the town and then I don't know where the store is or how to get to it.

I know a good bed is an investment but am I being a fool to spend that much? What would you all do?

And the price.. If you have the Matress 8 years it's £100 a year - less than £10 a month - that is a small price to pay for a healthy back

What do you hate about it Mango? The one I want is the combination pocket springs and gel layers. Is that the one you have? Is it too soft or too hard?

When you put it like that, it doesn't seem so much.

We are having an expensive mattress dilemma at the moment. Me and DH want opposite types so have had to look at the ones that are half and half. The one we agree on is £799! Way more than I intended to spend on a mattress. The frustrating thing is Dreams tried us on their bed thingy and we should both have the same type, a fairly soft one. DH wants a firmer one and this is the wore type for me. I have health problems too and wake up in pain. DH also sold it to me as a breakdown in price for the year, it doesn't seem that much when you put it that way.

I've also Googled and the mattresses (Harrison) are bloody expensive where ever you get them from.

Same as me lol. I only wanted to spend about £400 Could you not get a foam topper and cut it in half. Just put it on your side to soften it? Wilko sell them quite cheap.

Yes it's the pocket and gel layer. Therapur serenity I think it's called. I thought the gel layer was lovely in the shop but I'm waking up every morning with awful back pain I think I need the bouncy support of the spring rather than the gel you kind of just sink. But if I was you I'd still get it to try it out , my oh loves it and is a bit aggrieved that we are swapping but I have a bad back so unless he wants me moaning every morning he has to put up with it! The other downside is gel doesn't breathe so waking up very hot!

We had a firm mattress for years which suddenly became way too hard for me. First purchase was also too firm so swapped for dearer one which has a pillow top and is fine (pocket springs). We tried the foam toppers before buying new but I hated it ... if you weigh more than a few pounds you leave an impression in it which you have trouble turning round in. That was in the attic for years and now at the tip.

It's several months since this thread was started but I feel I need to comment for the benefit of anyone reading it. I bought the Ergofl3x mattress a couple of years ago after my brother whole heartedly recommended it. I read about the 30 day guarantee and decided to buy one. However, the 30 day guarantee isn't all it's cracked up to be as there are costs involved in returning the mattress which is quite heavy so that won't be cheap. Also, they really try and encourage you to stick with it and you are made to believe that these type of mattresses always feel different at first. Now I know everyone is different, and as I said, my brother likes his mattress. However, I've never been happy with mine. At first I found it too firm but decided to persevere with it in the hope I'd get used to it. I didn't. I even rang the company and spoke to them about my aches and pains and they convinced me that it must be my pillows! I changed my pillows but that doesn't account for my aching lower back and shoulders or waking up unable to feel my fingers on occasion. If I place my hand under my back when lying on it and press down into the mattress, I am convinced I can feel the peaks of the more dense foam underneath, which cause annoyance. What I also find strange is that you will not find bad reviews on this mattress which is very odd, as there must be others like myself who have had a similar experience. I managed to find only one when I searched "Ergofl3x bad reviews" obviously spelling the brand name correctly. The reason I haven't spelled it correctly is that I am convinced someone in their company sits and searches out the bad reviews and gets them removed! So just be aware that this mattress is not necessarily as perfect as the strangley biased reviews would have you believe.

We bought beds from Dreams.

I used the thirty day swap and they were fine anout it.

People very friendly and helpful.

An yes you can haggle on the proce and delivery.

Re the warranty, you have protection under law if not fit for purpose etc., so not sure what the care plan covers. If you're disabled in any way there's no VAT to pay.

New mattresses made a huge difference. Can now sleep at night.

We got the mammoth foam one from dreams - bloody awful. Swapped it for mammoth sprung one with layer - much better. We had a rest assured 1400 pocket sprung with latex layer it was just as good and prob not as expensive

We have recently bought a Hypnos mattress and my husband said it's been the best few nights sleep he's ever had (also a bad back and neck sufferer)

The advice we were given was to go out and try in store to find the one that felt right but then go online because you'll always find it cheaper.

We got ours from here www.bestpricebeds.co.uk/hypnos-bid138.html so i'd check it out because we got it in a sale but we were also told healthopaedic was another brand to look at

My experience with a Deams mattress was that it sagged after a couple of years. If you are going to spend lots on a mattress I'd go for something like hypnos.

Just butting in to ask why isn't chronic pain classed as a disability, I don't understand

If everyone did this there wouldn't be anywhere to go and try the mattress out...

I'm really interested in this too, as I was just at Dreams yesterday, and was trying out the Therapur Rapport mattress, springs with the gel top. I found it very comfortable in the shop, but wasn't sure after reading stuff online as people said the off-gas smell lasted ages.

I'm never sure about the chemicals in memory foam, whether it's a good idea or dangerous long term. Or whether gel, latex, etc are all similar. Although some of them say natural latex, apparently it's only a small percent that is natural and the rest is synthetic, which might also give off fumes?

So I don't really know where to start! I wake up with back ache. I was trying some out in John Lewis and was told that it means my mattress was probably too firm (it's very old and he said it was probably compressed - it used to be very comfortable).

One of them was a pocket sprung with 1000 springs, which seemed more comfortable than the ones with 1400 or 1600, bizarrely. And was the cheapest, which is good in some ways, but worrying because people say you get what you pay for and it's worth spending on a good mattress. They also don't do a trial/money back offer the way Dreams and some of the others do.

Where to start?! Most of them feel OK in the shop but I know they won't once I try them overnight for a while. Also my back is a bit sore now anyway, so it's hard to tell if it's the mattress or just me, if it aches when I try it out.
