Am I suffering a sense of humour failure or is it utterly dispiriting that our local shopping centre (Centre Court in Wimbledon) is celebrating Mother's Day by holding a competition which includes these categories: Baking Mum, Sporty Mum, Beautiful Mum, Fashionable Mum, Glamorous Mum and Stressed Mum, and that the local Mumsnet site is involved and supporting this cliched, unimaginative, sexist rubbish.

Is a silly competition but it is mothers day so I cant see how it is sexiest unless mothers include fathers?

I think it's odd that you've let the prizes determine the categories.

Isn't that how these things normally go? You tailor the prizes to the competition, or vice versa, in an attempt to make sure potential entrants think it's worth bothering entering and the eventual winner isn't terribly disappointed.

I think not doing that could be far more offensive, ultimately.

Consider, for example, a Most Well-read Mum category. I read a lot, and I would definitely enter for a laugh if there were Waterstones or Amazon vouchers to be won. Sports gear vouchers? No chance! Make-up? Also no chance.

If I was in a bad mood, not only would I not enter but I'd see the implications of giving the winning voracious reader sportsgear vouchers or a make-up basket as quite poisonous.

Hhaha it is a bit lame and the categories are slightly odd considering how savvy people generally are on here but I'm not professionally offended by it.
It would be great to run an alternative competition here though, bet anonymous mumsnet could come up with some far more imaginative and realistic titles than this

The whole idea is that it's a bit of lighthearted fun. We are supporting mums and families' recognition of them rather than gender-stereotypes.

The 'types' say more about the prizes on offer (which are very much the products marketed to celebrate Mother's Day) than anything else.
