Grin

NC (does chicken noises)
I am laughing about this by the way.

History:
I have a school friend who I have known through the DC for about 2 years now- very friendly, lots of sleepovers with the kids/camping/going out for dinner.
They all had been hit by the flu bug a couple of weeks ago and as I would ask for any friend I offered help. I was thinking I could make some soup of bread for them, run some errands etc.

"Yes actually you could help"
Pause
"Can XXXX (Dh's name) come and tile our utility room? "We're all so ill we're not able to manage it"

Grin

Well I wasn't sure how to answer that so did the usual "he will come out and give you a quote when you're feeling better" was met with her hanging up on me.

The woman has not spoken to me since.

Cheeky, much?

It's the sort of reply me and my friend would give though. but only as a joke. At least I think she was joking. Grin

Actually I know she is. Grin

Look on the bright side - better a clearly OTT request now - which you can refuse - than a long series of small things which would 'train' you into a slavish role.

We've tiled most of our bathroom, just the window frame left, but we've all been struck down with a sickness bug. When can he be here?

Reminds me of a friend who wanted me to adjust her wedding dress for free. I ran my own business at the time - making bridal and formal wear. I wasn't considered good enough to make the dress, just adjust it and not be paid.
I grew a spine and said no, the friendship rapidly cooled.
By the way op, I have a herniated disc in my spine, when can I expect your dh to come and fit my new bathroom? Grin Grin

If you're pimping out your DH for tiling, I have a bathroom that needs doing... seriously: wtaf?! With friends like this, etc etc - some people have a right bloody nerve!

Utility tiles is code for Swingers? Blush

But you made that up right?

Cheeky cow!
My crazy neighbour asked me to tell my dp to replace her bathroom floor. I did ask him, he refused, and she said we didn't have a proper relationship if he doesn't do what he's told!
She hasn't spoken to me since.

I coughed this morning. Please will you come round and paint my living room? Grin

She sounds like a complete user, but if it's any consolation she is now probably kicking herself for ruining her long-term plan of getting your DH to re-tile their kitchen, bathroom/s and utility room. You're well rid Slayer, but it is sad for your respective DCs.

Well gosh sakes, tiling is hard work, I'm sure they couldn't have done it themselves in fairness Grin

I fear now I have been inadequate in my attempts to aid ill friends in the past. Instead of cooking for them or picking up their children I shall instead assist them with some non essential redecorating. After all, nothing beats the flu blues than a set of new tiles.Hmm

As it happens ive got a similar flu/cold bug and if someone was to start re tiling in my house I would find the strength to raise myself from my sick bed and physically throw them out so I could rest in silence.

wow!! the mind boggles. and after you were kind enough to offer practical help - to a flu ridden household as well!

from your posts I'm getting that you haven't had enough time to be really good friends with her? If she was a long standing good friend, I would suggest calling in case something else was awry, but it sounds like it isn't, so I wouldn't bother.

That is one of the maddest things I've ever heard.

Shock I honestly can't believe some people! Well. Actually, I can! My DH is often too soft with people (he is a mechanic/handyman) we have a fair bit of space at the front of our house, front of house probably has room for 3 cars, one on the drive and one in the garage. Anyway a "friend" asked if he could store his car for 2 weeks to repair it (it'd been in an accident) It ended up being there for two months. We didn't get a penny either, just a sorry then six months later a 70cl bottle of vodka not even a litre, the bloomin cheek! he asked for favours since but we have declined!

What a cheeky mare! But I feel that your hindsight reasoning may well be right - you might have been "targeted" as a "useful friend" (or "friend with useful DH") to be called upon when the moment was right.

Bloody awful though, I do feel for you and your DH. Can't bear people like that!

You could have said "No i'm sorry he's busy but I can have a bash at it for you! Never tiled before but how hard can it be? I'll be over in the morning - anything for a friend in need...." Grin

Now, are you absolutely sure she didn't want someone to come over and tidy her utility room? Could be an awful misunderstanding Smile.

I'm amazed that her mind went there straight away! No, yes please, can you bring us milk, tissues, lemsips, but can you pop round and do some tiling...the mind boggles.

Could it be some sort of swingers code e.g. "fancy coming round and tiling my utilty" wink wink? Perhaps you inadvertently spurned her advances and that's why she's so offended...

Seriously though, how horrible! You must be really upset. Being dumped by a friend can be more upsetting than breaking up with a boyfriend IME. I wouldn't be able to resist confronting her at school tbh or even going round to their utility room house to get at the truth.

I had a friend like this - and then she moved to next town and I was ill and couldnt help her at all. (Hideous back, couldnt walk, move etc) and was sort of disposed of.

But in hindsight, we did lots for her family and their dogs etc while she did not a lot for mine. Weird friendship really. Anyway, my point is that this person is still the same, the horses/dogs/kids are shuffled around, and she has serious boundary issues in using people. Her grandmother even told me that she was incapable of being a good friend :(

I wonder if its the same person OP Grin
