To be suspicious of people on Facebook local selling pages who sell "brand new with tags" items

Maybe I am too cynical, but surely if an item of clothing is "brand new with tags" and "still for sale in the shops" then you would just take it back to the shop for a refund?

Aibu to suspect that, in particular, the prolific sellers of "brand new with tags" items might have acquired them by shoplifting?

There's one on my local fb selling that's a definite thief. My friend works in retail and she's been caught stealing from there before.

yeah...i always think 'stolen/shoplifted'.....some woman on one im on was trying to sell 'genuine' swarovski necklaces 'worth £300 but selling them for £150....unwanted gifts with certificates'....i asked her if she had the codes and she asked what codes, i told her that they all have a code that you find out from swarovski if they are actually genuine....she instantly removed them from the site!

Funny you put this up when I'm just about to put up an ad for some bits that I've bought that didn't fit and I've left it too long to send them back.
I've waited and waited for my return labels to arrive and it's now past the date I can send them back so I want to sell the Ralph Lauren trainers, Levi's jeans and run of the mill pair of jeans- that I've no idea how do describe as they have no name or popular cut or anything!!

So anyway, it's well over £100 worth of stuff, that I'd like to sell as the jeans are too small, and the trainers are too big to get use out of, and I could do with the cash to put towards rent (whole other thread, but we've been dealt some shitty circumstances over the past month and were unable to pay rent, and selling these bits of unused unuseful clothing would help us to pay off what we owe LL)

So no, not everyone's a shoplifter.

I find items buried at the bottom of my wardrobe that I bought and never wore so sell them with tags on. People can also lose the receipt which means you can't return it. So not everyone is a thief.
However I tend to find the thieves are obvious as they are always selling brand new stuff.

Depends. I live 25 miles from the closest city with shops. Often people here try to sell it on as the cost and hassle sometimes aren't worth it. Even when I lives in the city I would probably have tried it first on the selling site to save me the hassle of trooping into town on the bus or having to pay for.parking to return.

I have piles of unworn with tags clothes in my/DCs wardrobes including a £600 dress often I don't realise I'm not going to wear it until after the exchange window and so I might well sell it as BNWT except I wouldn't. If I was that organised if have returned it in first place I'm not a thief

i dont think its the odd thing with labels on its the amount of stuff some people seem to have with labels on....4 or 5 hoodies, 10 pair of joggers, jeans etc...shoes, kids clothes, not one or two items....absolutely loads of items..its definately suspicious in that sense

I sell brand new with tags items on ebay, either items I've bought from ebay and then don't fit, or things that have passed their return date (yes, I'm indecisive)
I'm probably the exception though.

If it's still got the tags on and not been used I would describe it as brand new even if it's been originally bought say a year ago

If they seem to do it a lot yes I would be suspicious. There's a few on my local pages that do this. Same if I were on eBay which I cant do as paypal doesn't seem to like Scots bank accounts!

However I'm also in the back of beyond and people do buy gifts/without trying on as nearest decent shopping town over an hour away and people round here generally don't go very often. Depends on your area, locality of shops, is there a lot of shoplifting there?

I assume it's unwanted gifts, particularly if it's kids stuff. Many people don't give the receipts and even if they do you often only get an exchange

If is still in the shops and described as brand new with tags then yes I assume stolen.

Even if you have lost the reciept you can get an exchange.

There is someone on mine who always sells brand new Yankee candles, but a few at a time in random scents. It does make me suspicious if they sell s lot of the sand kind of stuff.

There are a few people on my local site that either have a shopping addiction or are on the rob. Every week it is bnwt Next or shoes and I so want to say 'refund hun?'
There's also the wife of someone I work with and she's always trying to flog used big name stuff that's been used twice. He doesn't earn anything like enough to pay for the stuff and I wonder what's going on.

We see it quite a lot here. We live at the end of the earth and it is 26 miles to the nearest decent shopping town. Those who can be bothered to haul their arses there to shop in the first place, can rarely be bothered a second time to do returns!

I sold a brand new blind that I had bought for my daughters room. Despite measuring it, it was too small. Packaging had been opened and therefore the shop wouldn't take it back. So I popped it on fb. Not everyone is a thief but there probably is quite a few

Hm, there might be a bit of this but I've also noticed that stuff shows up on ebay after shops have a sale - the seller advertises the full price of the item but is clearly offering less of a discount on this than the shop was. Also, I've often wondered if some ebay stuff is sold by employees taking advantage of a discount. When it's a seller with a lot of items, I presume that shoplifting is not a sustainable business model! But for someone selling an item as a one off on Facebook, for sure that looks suspicious.

Ebay has a mix of professional sellers, amateurs with a few bits and quite a few dishonest folk. You can't really tell who fits what category easily.

I've always taken 'brand new' to mean unworn rather than 'bought within the past week'.

The good thing about facebook buy and sell pages is that it is much easier to guess who the dodgy sellers are than on Gumtree or eBay.
