AIBU?

To not strip beds in holiday home?

Arrived at holiday flat to find notes in both bedrooms requesting we strip the beds on leaving.

AIBU to find this cheeky? There's not so much as a spare loo roll laid on, the place isn't that clean & it's of course eye-wateringly expensive as it's August and by the seaside. (£800! For 2 bedrooms, for a week - and they charged us extra for towels!) Our choice, of course, to go ahead and book, but I didn't think I'd be asked to strip the chuffing beds at that price. AIBU?

There is nothing wrong with being asked to strip beds, and I would always do this in a holiday rental whether asked to or not.

It is standard practice for all Landmark Trust properties and they are very posh!

I always offer when I am a guest in someone's house.

When I am a paying customer I wouldn't, and I'd be a bit narky if I were instructed to do so. I'd do it, but be a bit narky.

IMO this is one of those things that separates being a guest from being a customer. I wouldn't dream of staying at a friend's without at least offering (though I wouldn't do it automatically, they may not have anyone staying for a while and want to put the sheets on at a different time).

I would always tidy up after myself in a rented place but I would class bed stripping as one of the things I was paying for.

Several years ago we took our three young boys to a holiday park/camp site in the south of France. We stayed in a largish chalet.
When we arrived we had to make up our beds. All the pots and pans etc were stacked up on the kitchen table. There was a note saying that when we left we were expected to clean EVERYTHING including the inside of cupboards, walls etc. I kid you not. All pots and pans were to be left in a specified order on the table. We also had to make an appointment for someone to come and inspect our cleaning on the day of departure. Failure to do so would result in £50 being taken off our credit card for cleaning costs.

We were told that our cleaning was not up to standard as we had not cleaned one shelf adequately. They were extremely rude about it.

This left a really bad taste at the end of a fantastic holiday.
Needless to say we didn't return.

The turnaround is so tight between guests I think it's just more time the cleaners can spend mopping and cleaning.

I read so much about cleaning issues at the end of French holidays, it seems almost standard Shock

I've been a house keeper in a very exclusive property and I didn't really care if the bed was stripped or not. In your case op, I'd be inclined not to, purely for stinginess of loo roll.

I would not do this. You are paying them to do something.

I do make sure washing up is done and the place is basically tidy.

I've done it when not asked. I always leave places clean and tidy.
But I object to being told to do it when I have just paid £800 for a week!
The only thing the cleaners would have had to do after I left was re make the beds and re stock the loo rolls etc.
Would have taken half an hour.

Whether I strip the beds or not generally depends on what type of self catering - big complex with teams of cleaners, prob not; individually owned probably. I always leave it neat and tidy but FIL drives me barmy by basically doing a deep clean before leaving anywhere and insinuating I'm a slattern for not doing so Confused

I generally strip the beds if I have the time. Generally I do because it doesn't take long.

We are staying in a stunning property in the Lake District right now, I stripped the beds this morning when the cleaner came and I'll do them next week before we leave. The place is so well equipped and we had wine on arrival.....I'll do anything if I'm given wineWink

We always leave the place as we find it. Hoover or brush the floors, empty the bins, do all the washing up and strip the beds.

I wonder if you were staying in the same place as us. We had this a few weeks ago. No spare loo roll and would we mind stripping the beds to make it quicker for the cleaners

We left a holiday let this morning and completely forgot to put the dishwasher on on our way out of the door Blush

In my defence, I also forgot to put on my own dishwasher as I left to go on holiday, so I obviously have dishwasher blindness.

We didn't vacuum before we left, we just left it in a tidy state, with the kitchen counters wiped. I do feel that you're paying for a clean in your cost, otherwise why the hell do they want you out by 10am?!

I don't really mind leaving a place ready for a changeover, so piling linen in a bath, a wipe over of the kitchen surfaces, and a little attention to any floors looking particularly bad (for example, because we've been walking in and out packing the car) is ok-ish.

What gets up my nose more than anything else though is the implication that I have to do these jobs 'because the turnaround is so tight'.

Listen, sunshine: it's your business- you set the terms and decide on the work you're going to do. If four hours isn't enough time to sort a let out then you either need to make more time or hire more staff. Not guilt-trip your customers.

I would always leave a holiday let as clean and tidy as I found it. Stripping a bed takes 2mins. The list thing suggests they have had guests who left it in a right state and had to spell it out. I wouldnt expect them to mention their turn around tho, thats not your problem its theirs. But I wouldnt expect to be 'let off' for any reason and being out by 10 is do-able if you do 20mins on a couple of cleaning bits the night before/packing a few bits night before.

What an odd thing to request- stripping a bed takes seconds so will hardly save the cleaners time. If I was cleaning it I'd want to check the bed linen too. I've never seen this in all my years of renting holiday lets. Normally I'll leave it tidy with work tops and hob clean, bung the dishwasher on and take out the bins. But that's all.

We've left a villa this morning, and we were asked to strip the beds and wash the sheets before leaving, which I thought was a bit cheeky really. There was also a sign asking us to wash and dry all towels before we left. I've done it, but it took a while. There was a pool, so we had a lot of towels to do.

I didn't do any cleaning, but we've left it tidy, cleared up the crumbs, loaded and emptied the dishwasher, and got rid of any food that we had left. To be honest it wasn't terribly clean when we got there. Floors were a bit dusty around the edges and things like blinds and lampshades were extremely dusty.

A couple of the cottages we have used have asked for the beds to be stripped so it is clear to the cleaners which beds have been used/need changing. eg if it was a 3 bedroom house but only 2 rooms were used, they would know which to change. I always strip beds and put all bedding and towels in the bath, we also clean, not a deep clean, a quick wipe of kitchen and bathroom, and hoover any obvious crumbs etc.

I wouldn't be impressed to be asked if I am paying a full market rate. And frankly if it takes 5 minutes then it shouldn't be a big deal for the cleaners to do it. This sort of thing is something that can leave bad tastes for guests when they've otherwise had an enjoyable stay.

Every holiday cottage I have ever stayed has requested this . Mind you I used to clean holiday cottages as a teenager so I do it automatically , plus I always clean the bathroom and kitchen and sling the hoover round a bit , I should get a discount really Grin

Oh and wash out the kitchen bin !

I have a holiday let;wouldn't expect guests to strip the beds although a couple have. I think it's pretty mean not to pay the cleaner for the extra 15 minutes it takes to strip the beds. IME it takes 3 - 4 hours to clean a holiday cottage so it makes little difference.

I always strip the beds, and stick the sheets in the wash every time, wash up and empty bins. Habit, I suppose, and it takes a couple of minutes. Wouldn't clean anything though.

Seems a little bit...."Ten percent for sleeping with the windows shut" to me. Cheeky. Given the "extra for the towels..."
