AIBU?

AIBU or is this cheeky?

I took some photos at a get together at the weekend. I put them on FB and tagged the people in it. One of the tagged people has used one of my pics as their profile pic without so much as a "like" or asking permission on mine. Lots of their friends are now commenting on their picture that it's a "brilliant shot" and their silence (rather than crediting me) is making people think they took it! This hasn't happened to me before (keen amateur photographer). Am I really going to have to water mark all my photos?!

Yabu because you took the picture at friend's request then shared it by tagging them. That's essentially giving the picture to them.

This is why I love AIBU, because I never really think people like the op exist in real life! Craziness!! YABU

Op, why did you post? You obviously are sure you are not being unreasonable, so don't understand why you asked in aibu.

Simple fact is that by putting it up there and tagging them you shared it with them.

Using an image deliberately out out into the public domain is not stealing!
You tagged them, they liked the snapshot you took, they shared it. Wasn't that the whole point of you sharing it in the first place?
You're not a professional photographer - what difference does it make?
Sharing a snapshot of your kids is so unlike taking an image of a stranger from Google its nonsensical to make the pseudo-comparisom.

It's not stealing but I would've given you a credit if I'd used it.

I think it would have been kind to say "Thank you"
Wouldn't it?
I don't see how anyone can argue any different?
Facebook etiquette in my experience.

Agreed, a thank you would've been nice, but presumably they did that in person when you took the pic?

If you are that keen to protect your IP rights and get credit for every photo you take regardless of context perhaps it would be better if you leave the camera at home for social events so people can't 'take advantage' Hmm.

You presume wrong. Lesson learned.

You took a photo, that is all, nothing major that they owe you undying gratitude for. The overwhelming majority of people think you're being unreasonable but if you're insisting you're not, why post?

Please show me where I have said I am not being unreasonable, because I don't recall typing such a thing.

I was brought up to say thank you to people that did something for me or gave me a gift. I don't like bad manners. But apparently it's all fine.

I'm off to empty the sweet bowl at the hairdressers into my handbag. (Well, they shouldn't put them out if they don't want people to take as many as they want.)

When you tag someone in a photo or post doesn't that post show up on their own timeline? I always thought it did. Confused

If so, doesn't that mean they are merely making a profile pic of a photo that someone else has effectively posted to their timeline?

As for the lack of acknowledgement, maybe your friend hasn't been on FB since posting to notice that her friends are wrongly attributing your genius skills to her?

I went to my cousin's wedding in California last year, with my super-duper DSLR.

The wedding was on the beach and I took several pictures, including one with the telescopic lens of the pair of them, their backs to us, having a snog.

When I came back home I put the pics on FB. It then came to my intention that this pic of them ended up blown up and on their living room wall, confirmed by my cousin's wife when I saw them next.

Was I put out? Like hell I was. I was in fact incredibly flattered that they liked it that much.

If you want photo credit I think nowadays you put something along the lines of :

Feel free to share etc but I would appreciate it if picture credit is given

YABU

Op, you should take it as a compliment.

You sound about ten years old.

I used to write schmaltzy poems that were picked up by many animal charities. I've googled them and my name used to appear on the bottom, but they've been shared so many times now that my name isn't there any more. I even found one being read out on a Youtube video.

It's no biggie to me, If I didn't want people to use them I wouldn't have put them on social media. It's nice to know that people like something you've created. You should be flattered.

You've not actually typed the words 'I am not being unreasonable', however it's clear by your replies that you still think your right Confused.

Good for you, but that's not the same situation. Your friend didn't take as many as she wanted, she took one, which you put out there and tagged her in. Same as you'd only take one sweet in the hairdressers.

Once you post photographs on Facebook you loose any and all claim to ownership of them.
If you want to be so precious about your photos in future I suggest you keep them to yourself.

"I was brought up to say thank you to people that did something for me or gave me a gift."

But you didn't give them a gift or do anything for them, you posted a photograph on Facebook.
If you had given them a framed print of the photo I could see your point buy frankly you are being ridiculous.

Wait, your not the sister of the MNer who posted about her DSis who refuses to show her any of the photographs she takes of the MNers DCs because she claims the phot is are special to her are you?

OP I don't think you understand how FB works.

You tagged them in the picture - that makes it ok for them to use it how they wish on their profile.
