AIBU?

Upset at being filmed taking pastry out of the freezer - AIBU?

Our freezer is in the garage. Last night I went in there to get some pastry out for making mince pies today. When I came in my DH was on his computer watching a film of me getting the pastry out.
Without my knowing he had installed a camera in the garage.

I was furious and felt very unsettled, did I over-react? Would it upset you too?

(We haven't been burgled in this house and we have a good relationship, no conflict at all usually. DH's explanation was that it was for when we go on holiday - we have no holidays planned.)

TheCatsFlaps, that absolutely ruins the flavour IME although it does defrost quicker

Why is the pastry not jammed up his backside sideways?

I shouldn't have clicked on this thread.

This would end it for me. I could never get past in, it taps in to one of my deepest fears.

That said i can theorise a situation where the dh just didn't think it through but i would be going through his computer with a fine tooth comb (openly) before i be willing to consider it an indelicate blunder.

Mostly I would want to move out immediately

Ha, my husband is obsessed with gadgets and there are little cameras all over the place so we can check on our little one / see who is burgling us etc.

Now that I know this is a massive red flag, I suppose I'd better LTB?

Your DH has set up a camera to catch pastry burglars?

Watch out for the pressure pad he's installed by the front door Grin

I think the others are right - he bought it as a bargain and had to do something with it.

As an aside, my big chest freezer can be locked, and years and years ago thieves stole about a hundred pounds worth of frozen meat from my grandparents freezer.

Very odd. We have CCTV but on the outside. DH would never install cameras inside and definitely not without talking to me.

Suspect it's a scenario like Fairyliz suggests.

How odd. We have CCTV outside that dh can check on his phone but it's used to protect the cars on the drive not to spy.

That said he did call me and bollock me once for being up a set of ladders cleaning the caravan roof because I have health issues that means I probably shouldn't be doing it. I tried to deny it but he said "I'm bloody watching you!!" And I was bang to rights.Blush

I had no idea this was even a thing. People childish idiotic hare-brained men really do this? Some days I truly give thanks for my technologically challenged only-interested-in-wine-and-history DH. Why would anyone do this?

How utterly weird notagain I mean 'toilet' I can imagine there's some oddballs that like...well...you know. That'd be awful but at least would have an explanation.

Chopping food etc, wtf? Confused Just why? No wonder she's never been the same. The wondering why would drive anyone round the bend.

What kind of a man wants to covertly watch someone having a dump or cooking a meal Confused

Your poor friend notagain, did she have any suspicions of his freakery before she found the cameras?

A good friend of mine discovered tiny cameras like this all over her house.including pointing at toilet, chopping boards, all sorts. Constantly recording her and her children doing the most mundane things. He couldn't explain so she divorced him within months, was hprribly unsetlling and she not been the same ever since.
Or you know, just boys toys! shudder

YANBU, very odd, especially as he wasn't hiding it and let you see him watching the vid on the computer.

You don't say the reason he gave for getting it though, you must have asked him?

If it was a case of being a 'boys toy' surely he would have mentioned it at some point? The gadget nerds I know can't help rabbiting on about about their latest acquisition, regardless of whether the listener is interested or not!

Like other posters, I'd be wondering what else he's been up to.

It would make me wonder if there were any other cameras, and what else is going on without my knowledge. It would make me deeply unsettled - and I would expect anyone who knows me well enough to live with me to understand that being filmed without my knowledge is not something I'm comfortable with.

I agree with Fairyliz.

Fairyliz · 24/12/2014 16:25

Is it a sort of boy with a new toy scenario? I know several men who would think oh a cheap camera I would like to buy one of those and then justify it on 'security' grounds.
Then he sets it up in the garage to have a go with it? Can you tell from the invoice when he purchased it? If it is recently I think you may need to forgive his thoughtlessness and just put it down to over enthusiasm.

NickerPicker · 24/12/2014 16:22

Is it a pen concealed camera?

I agree with Moving, I don't really understand why you'd be bothered by this.

Report
Coumarin · 24/12/2014 16:17

Well that's one of the weirdest fetishes I've ever heard of.

Yanbu. It is odd to have not told you and I'd be very uncomfortable too. Especially if he knows about your privacy issues.

I don't think there's anything sinister behind it but he is out of order.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 24/12/2014 16:14

Unless he has also installed a sex dungeon in there for his movie making purposes I'm not really sure why you're bothered?

If he's put one in the loo or your bedroom ywnbu either.

Gruntfuttock · 24/12/2014 16:11

I don't want to worry you, but I suspect that your DH has gone round the bend, fallen off his trolley and lost his marbles.
