Not strictly aibu but what are your favourite low calorie snacks? I have been hitting the sugar free jelly hard this summer but the cold weather is here and I am not so keen for it anymore. What helps you get through to dinner time??

an awful lot of low-fat crap being eaten here. Check the labels, you may find it has more calories than the decent version.

Sugar free maple syrup, not fat free. I suspect you'll struggle to get it in the UK but you can hardly move for the stuff in the US.

Chop up a whole cauliflower and simmer in chicken stock til tender. (I'm lazy and use an oxo.) Add a splash of soy sauce or a teaspoon of marmite and puree.

I don't buy any low fat stuff anymore, it is usually loaded with extra sugar and yoghurts are among the worst for that.

I eat popadums, 30 cals each if bought uncooked and done in the microwave-dipped in salsa.

Apples with a spoonful of peanut butter works too.

I don't really go for low calorie snacks though, if you're a serial snacker yes It's good to have low calorie rather than high calorie, but I'd sooner make a small, filling meal rather than a snack, like a salad with avocado, seeds, olives and another protein topping. Sometimes It's in your head and an official, 'sit down' meal can satisfy more than grabbing a snack and not really thinking about it?

I agree, a lot of stuff labeled low-fat is often high in sugar, so do check labels. That's why I only eat Mullerlight yogurts and not the really lovely Rachel's ones or any of the other almost as lovely ones...

I knew an elderly lady once who would eat diabetic biscuits because they were low in sugar.Hmm

As it's an AIBU, yes, YABU. The better option is to have decent meals and no snacks. Perpetuating the idea that snacks are ok if they are healthy isn't as good as aiming not to eat at all between meals.

Make the meals more creative and drink lots of tea or water in between if you're hungry. Often people are actually thirsty rather than hungry, so always start with a drink.

Hang on, Scone! Some people can't physically handle three proper sized meals a day and need to eat 4 or more smaller, snack sized ones. Or it could be that some people, especially those having a problem losing weight, they find smaller meals more often is an easier option.

Not everyone is the same and YABU!Hmm

bananas or unsalted nuts. If I need a sugar rush I have dried figs.
I agree with a pp who suggested basing much more of your diet around plants, so snacking on carrots / sugar snaps / radishes is a good idea too.

Scone I can't deal with just eating 3 meals a day, I get ridiculously hungry and feel sick! When I need a snack I make myself up a little salad with whatever veg I have in the fridge chopped into little bits, a bit of cheese or egg, some seeds and light mayo/light veg sandwich paste all mixed together.

I, too, hate this "3 meals a day, no snacks" bollocks trotted out. I eat breakfast at 7.30 and don't usually get to lunch until 1.30/2. If I didn't eat a small snack (usually some fruit in the AM) my stomach will make embarrassingly loud noises and I'll have a headache. I eat smaller meals and have 3 snacks a day.

OP, I avoid the supposed low calorie stuff too and I feel better for it. The low fat/low calorie yoghurts are full of crap. I try to incorporate protein into my snacks; a boiled egg, a few slices of ham or chicken. I make a fruit salad which is slightly less boring than say, a pear or an apple. Homemade vegetable soups are a lifesaver when I've rushed in after work and I need a quick fix but I don't have time to prepare something.
