Its got a lot of action but plot wise is quite a slow burner, theres still plenty that hasnt been dealt with yet. Jon Snow's mum for instance? But if you're comparing it to soaps and the dirge the BBC calls drama then yes I agree.

I like HBO, think they make some brilliant shows many of which dont get enough accolades.

Tbf it's just HBO shows (some fx aswell, breaking bad is very slow paced at tunes)

HBO are subscription, they cater to a certain kind of viewer and because they're subscription they're not as reliant on high ratings and sponsors.
So they can try different things and take their time

I love Game of Thrones, but it's not exactly a slow burner - there's load of action and sex and someone dies in every episode! But yes it's more like those series I mentioned than a lot of programs.

Have you not seen Game Of Thrones Riffy?

YANBU. I loved The Sopranos and The Wire and I don't think there will be anything like them again - the stories were allowed to move slowly, building characters naturally as they went along, not everything that happened had to instantly lead to something IYKWIM. I don't think tv writers believe that viewers have the patience for that kind of storytelling now, there seems to be a quicker pace in popular tv shows. I think the kind of show that you have to really invest in and concentrate on is more satisfying in the end and The Sopranos and The Wire are definitely in that category.

I fell madly in love with JG too - the scene with Gloria at the zoo! Blush

the ending was perfect! He got the exact ending he always predicted, it couldn't have ended any other way (spoilers!!). I thought it was absolutely brilliant.

The episode in the woods - The Pine Barrens - was directed by Steve Buscemi.

I quite like Ray Donovan for that reason. Similar, but obviously not as good.

I did too and when he died in real life.

I've seem rumours of a prequel. Not sure if it would be as good though.

I've watched every episode about 4/5 times Grin the one with chrissy and paulie in the wood is one of my favs too Grin

I Love the episode with Christopher, Paulie and the Russians in the woods. Hilariously dark Grin.

My fave character was Sylvio. Great in the series and a cracking guy in real life. Love him.

I too hated the ending when I first saw it but its grown on me. I was never that fond of the Wire but really enjoyed Boardwalk Empire which has a lot in common with the Sopranos.

Freudian I found the scene harrowing too. For a second I thought maybe they'd let X go, but no.

I had to stop watching the whole programme after that.

Carmella was awesome!

James G is a legend x

I couldn't watch it!
Loved, loved the full series - but just couldn't bring myself to watch the end. Somewhere in my strange head they are all carrying on with their complicated lives..
Also was really very sorry to hear of James Gandolfini dying, a real talent lost.

LemonChicken I too disliked the ending - after such a brilliant series I felt cheated after having invested so much time getting there. I loved the series, but the ending was such a let down, all just fizzled out with no tying up of loose ends at all. Messy.

I loved The Sopranos, but I hated the last episode. I .... just didn't get it, lol. I felt cheated because they didn't tell me what had happened. I remember going online and googling "final episode sopranos" at the time, and yes it was widely believed to be an excellent ending. So I know I am the exception in disliking it. Still didn't spoil my overall love of the series though. I loved the black humour.

I couldn't watch it for a few months after JG died, so sad

Sopranos is the best ever!

Love the scenes between Tony and Dr Melfi, so brilliantly acted. Carmella was amazing too, such a range of emotions conveyed in just a look.

The Wire is fantastic. Oh you will cry especially season 4 :(

Report
Fixerupperz · 11/11/2014 20:09

We are doing the wire next. When someone was shot in the woods I felt a bit bereft especially since they're referenced to do much later on Sad.
