AIBU?

to help get over my fear of ghost's

I've been reading the spooky posts on here. Knew it was a bad idea but keep getting drawn to it. I find the stories very interesting but also scary.
I've never seen a ghost but I hate going in dark rooms or being alone.
I live in quite a new house so feel safe, my dh works most evenings and I know when the floorboards creek its either one of the boys sneeking out of bed or my fat cat.
I visit my dad at weekends and when the house is full I feel fine but its an old house and don't know the "history" eg I know a few years ago the house over the road the single man who lived there killed himself I don't know how I knew he died but the killing himself part I only found out last year and after he passed one of the lights at the top of the house kept coming on and this freaked me out, so I know if a house is old there are bound to be things that have happed in it.

I've been staying at my dads this weekend to look after his dog just me and my boys and during the day I'm fine but at night shit myself. No reason to I haven't heard or seen anything but couldn't sit alone in the front room for long and went to bed shortly after the kids. My dad has always said the house is unlucky he's lived here since 1996 but I think that's just because my mum left him.
I wish I knew how to get over the fear. The bathroom has a mirror over the sink and I kept thinking I could see things but I think it was just the trousers hanging up behind me or my hair moving. I know it sounds silly but I honestly don't think I could live in an old house out of choise.

OP please don't be put off by the snidyness you get here sometimes. AIBU is a bit of a bear bit. 'Chat' is much nicer, and relationships is gentler still.

For every sarcastic or unpleasant remark posted here there will be loads more reading reading this thread who agree with you, or empathise with you completely, but just haven't posted. Take heart.

My spelling is shite as well - i'm sure some have a good snigger about the ones that get through my spell check but that says more about them than me.

Come over to chat :)

Who needs to worry about evil spirits in your Dad's house- they have apparently all migrated to this thread. We'll keep 'em talking emms so they stay away from the house Wink.

Emms..take all the shit with a pinch of salt, please don't think you can't come on to mn for a bit of chat, not everyone wants to say crap things. To be honest tho, I think it was all said in a lighthearted way (about the punctuation) or am I missing something? Anyway who cares..I made a bit of a twat of myself with my spelling. .then god knows what happened with the posting! When I saw your post about ghosts I could feel myself smiling away to myself on the bus.. (yipee a ghost thread) so you know what..you brightened my day a little! As for bullies by the way. ..fuck them. Don't waste a second of your day thinking about their pathetic behaviour. (Far better to think of a friendly ghost) :-)

Emms

Would it help you to know that one of the sarkier posters on here is a Daily Fail journo who has the front to slag off those who believe in the supernatural as people 'who make up shit'. Grin.
Seriously though, I don't believe in them but I do get nervous in the dark sometimes and some of the nasty posts on here are a perfect example of why the living are far more malign in intent than any old ghost.

Emma don't let that chase you off.. These threads always bring out the claws...its like a compulsion with some of them on here and aibu is always a bit of a weird one if you're new.

Ah emms try a different part of MN to AIBU which is bitey & bunfighty at the best of times.

Come into Chat, the posters are nice & people don't jump on you like they do in here. Its not worth getting upset about, come & join us :)

(my typing is shit on my tablet, I barely make sense at all sometimes) :D

Ignore them emms

Sone people have nothing better to do than pic that kind of stuff apart.

I understood what you meant perfectly fine with or without apostrophes.

It's not hard to figure out what posters mean even with major mistakes. Your brain just fills in the blanks etc

After reading all the replies I'm so pleased there are so many perfect people out there who have nothing better to do than make comments about my use of an apostrophe, I was using my tablet and I'm more used to typing on my phone. Its also nice to know that people have nothing else to worry about and I wish I could swap with them.
I thought the subject matter would have been safe as I've seen some horrid replies to people on here but obviously you still found something to take the piss out of. I wont be coming on here anymore, I'm a lonely person and found mn as a place to help fill my days between missing my children when they go to school and house work as that's all i am fit for. The first time I came on here was looking for support when my dad had been admitted to hospital because I was feeling very down and don't have any friends to talk to.
I guess I will just have to go back to keeping myself to myself an no I'm not a troll or anything else I have never changed names I am just a lonely mother of 2 sons who are the only thing in my life I have ever been able to achieve. I was bullied in my last years at school and its ruined my life, I hope people who make others feel like shit are pleased with themselves.

pictish I agree I don't think they are ghosts either, but some people are saying things like why don't most people see them then, I'm just pointing out that not everyone is lucky enough to have these weird experiences...

hi thank you for the helpful comments, sorry i haven't been back sooner i was just a bit hurt at the few piss take ones at the start about the apostrophe i did by mistake, I'm a bit touchy because my spelling and punctuation is crap.

I know its a silly thing to be afraid of I've never seen a ghost, I have heard a couple of people tell me about things happening, my aunty thought her dad was haunting her once after someone told her he was trying to get her forgiveness for the way he treated them growing up, an ex driving instructor said his niece had seen an old man in their house and things were often being thrown at him or falling off the top of shelves.
I feel fine at home my husband is at work and sitting in the dark here doesn't bother me but I feel uneasy in my dads house alone.

And you fir snow reason revert back to the childhood " if I can see it, it can't see me" train of thought.

Who said it makes it go away?

It just makes you feel safer because your not looking at it any more, or have made it slightly harder to "get" you

But not being sacred of a real phenomenon because you happen to have some cloth over you is totally irrational, isn't it? Wouldn't it only work if, you know, there wasn't anything to actually be scared about?
Sorry to harp on about the bed thing, but it seems at the heart of it to me - if you genuinely believe there is something out there, believe it to your very core, then just lying down with a bit of cloth over you won't make the fear go away, will it?

My experiences tell me ghosts probably exist in some form. However your fear of them comes more from Hollywood than anything that ever has or would happen.

Well I believe in ghosts! Id love to see one! Unfortunately I haven't. .but my mum has. She saw a nun in an old habit whilst she was nursing at a hospital run by nuns. Of course there could be a rational explanation. .but she swears she saw her. I don't think anyone can say they definitely didn't exist. .how do you know that for sure? The same applies if you believe in them..you can't possibly say they definitely do exist..nobody seems to have any real proof! Our minds are amazing. .but who knows what is out there! (Yes I love a good alien abduction story too). If I ever feel a bit scared in the dark..I talk to them! Or talk to the angels..my dh thinks im mad, but I believe there is something beyond death. Will check out the darren brown prog tho!
