Ah think it was the carpet in the bar

Now, I know it's an MN cliche to say you laughed so hard you spit your coffee/tea/whatever at the screen, but I did just have to make a quick sideways jerk of the head to protect my new laptop. Grin

I don't think it can even be defended on the 'awful and garish and attention seeking' so it'll stand out. One of the most awful things about it is how utterly banal the dresses and shirts are. The dresses really do look like a nondescript mid-twentieth century granny's housecoat.

None of the (unattractive and clashing) colours used in these abominations are interesting enough to stand out anywhere. The uniform is ugly yet quite bland. It's the worst of all possible worlds.

SDT's FB conversation seems almost like an actual transcript of the meeting. How else do you end up with something like this?

Gaudy and ugly would actually have been a million times better.

It's a colour which clashes with itself

I found this on FB - it's how someone imagines the meeting to decide on the uniforms went:

In my minds eye I have a picture of Team Scotland's committee meeting to discuss what to do about the team uniform;

Chairman: "Ach, whut to do? We're sporty types and dinnae ken aboot fashion. Mebbe we shood hire yin o they designery types"

Committee member 1: "Aye we culd dae that but we huvnae much dosh",

Committee member 2:"Weeel my cuzins lassie's lass huz just left the art college - ah culd have a wurd and see if she up for it",

Chairman: "Guid man Lachie! Will she be any guid?"

Committee member 2: "Ach a dinea ken but she's a skinnny wee type who wears dodgy big bunnets and shawls so ah think that means she's artistic like and ah owe her auld man a favour - he sorted my car right oot, didnae charge much either ye ken"

Chairman: “Aye Lachie awa get her mun, she sounds just the ticket”
(designery type enters)

Designery type: “So, like whuts ma budget?”

Chairman: “Och hen we cannae be spendin too much, but we huv this tartan that the wee hotel doon the road was chuckin oot when they were doin the place up. Ah think it was the carpet in the bar”

Designery type: “Och yon's bonny. Ye can just feel the quality and the smell o beer, fags, shake'n'vac and urinal cake its just luvvly. Noo whut aboot shirts, dresses and the like? Ahm thinking a wee clashing colour wuld be nice and noticible. At skool they call that colour blockin ye ken”

Chairman: “Och we huvnae got the dosh for exras hen. Dae ye no huv any ideas of yer own?”

Designery type: “Hmm, noo just let me think fur a moment....Ah know! Are ye fond o they curtains o’er there?”

Chairman: “Ehh, no really”

Designery type: “Great! Have yooz ever seen The Sound o Music - ye ken, the film wi the nazis an' singin nuns? Ah huv a cunning plan”.....

Its kind of in the spirit of sticking out for being awful and garish and attention seeking I think?

Or hideous garish clashing colours is a fashion statement?

Ugh and those dresses just hang so badly and shapelessly.

I was disappointed they scrapped the demolition of the Red Road flats for the opening ceremony, I was planning on watching "IRL" (from a safe distance). It would have went well with the regeneration of the city, which seems to be the theme.

I will take a look at the petition though, the uniforms are an embarrassment.

"am now hoping we win nothing so the poor athletes dont have to wear this uniform too much"

I'll support the scots provided they aren't competiting against England.

I agree that Alex Salmond and the SNP needs to show solidarity by wearing the same! lol...

I absolutely LOVE it - funniest thing I've seen in a long while and will now watch the opening ceremony just to see the Scottish Team stepping out in these beauties !!

< Praying that Alex Salmond shows solidarity with team by wearing same and proposes as new national dress in the event of winning Independence, snigger>

It's so twee . . .and hideous. The designer said that it meant no-one would overlook the Scottish squad during the parades - well, she's right about that but for all the wrong reasons!

Maybe the English should buy some sun glasses rather than kicking the scots out of the union.

I just hope for the atheletes sake the the uniform are comfortable.

The tartan is ok i think. It could grow on me.

But that blue fabric for everything else? It looks as if someone just had a cheap job lot of polyester and went mad with it.

CalamitouslyWrong · 08/07/2014 10:00

Also cheap and practical does not have to mean seriously ugly.
