AIBU?

To want a quote for windows!

I'm married and apparently that means I need my husband's permission to get a quote for two bay windows. Two companies now won't give me a quote unless my husband is present. I know they do this to try and make you sign up on the day but it wouldn't matter if I had the whole of my extended family there I WILL NOT SIGN UP ON THE DAY! I don't have a clue how much double glazed windows cost so I'd be daft to sign up with the first company. So AIBU to want 2 or 3 companies to quote for two bay windows without my husband being present?

The big nationals can be dreadful for pricing. I was quoted £17k by Everest, reduced to £12k if I signed then and there, with a 4 month wait for fitting. For the identical windows I ended up paying £2.5k with a large-ish local company, no pressure to sign on the day, and only a 2 week wait. I had a total of 4 companies quoting, 2 large & 2 small, and both large ones were overpriced and pushy, and the small ones were cheaper & less pushy.

Though they all slagged down the other brands!

I had this more than 20 years ago. My then DH and I were home from work and the first appointment, Everest, turned up at 6.30pm. We were having just the double patio window replaced and I was going to pay for it (my turn). The salesman got into his routine and, at 9.30pm, told me to go and make some tea, dear.

That was it. As far as I was concerned he could waffle on but would not get the custom. He left at 11.30pm - empty handed. --. We finished up with a superb job from Anglia which was different then--.

Why don't these forceful companies realise how selfdestructive their policies are?

As another poster has said, what about widows or mature women who've never married? How do they manage to get double glazing without giving away their private details?

We've just had a really good experience with a teeny tiny firm just up the road. The owner of the company comes and measures up and you discuss what type of window you want, he tells you the regs about what he can supply (ie toughened glass on stairways, big enough opening to escape through on bedrooms) and then goes away and emails a quote same day. Excellent fitting, very happy. For a ball park, a one pane window (e.g hall way or bathroom) UPVC double glazed cost us £300 each fitting included and our big bay front window which we got as a UPVC sash was £1600.

It's a pressure selling technique to ask both of you to be there and, IMO, outdated and patronising. I agree with the other posters - contact local firms instead and get a better deal.

I remember getting quotes for new doors and practically having to kick a Safestyle salesperson out. I really don't need someone to spend the best part of an hour telling me the benefits of double glazing etc in this day and age. It was so old fashioned as a sales technique it was funny. When he eventually got to the point and gave a price, it was double what a local supplier had quoted. Bye bye Mr Safestyle. I think some of these firms are only interested in bigger, whole house jobs tbh.
