Cat food

I recently fed my cat Holly 'Felix' cat food in a pouch and now she is terribly sick. She vomited all of what she ate of it so now she will not eat or drink. Anyone else have same problem?

Yes I agree but it’s strange they don’t honk up with other cat food !?

@Valicejj This thread is 6 years old. I'm sure if there was an issue it would have been raised by now.

Yes one by one my cats are sick after eating felix a bit of concern we have now changed food to a top brand supermarket one they are no longer sick the only reason I have joined mumsnet is that I googled this very question and your message came up
So although I don’t have the answer
And it’s worrying that other cat owners are having this problem

That is very interesting nohooting. I would have thought they were like little lions - one big scoff and sleep for days! It makes me feel much better about Didokitty's eating habits and preference for less smelly dried food.

Cats are natural grazers, yes. They will eat around twenty bite-sized meals a day.

I have noticed that with dry food my cat seems to graze more, whereas wet food was wolfed down in one go. Are cats natural grazers? I would have thought not (a mouse at a time)?

My cats eat anything! I only give them dried food though as I find they have more solid poop then. They'll eat Sainsbury's own brand to go-cat to expensive iams and the like. They even eat salt & vinegar crisps if you leave any about. They have a huge bowl which I full up once a day and they graze happily. Never had any tummy problems luckily.
I suggest you take kitty to the vet ASAP op.
Hope the poor thing gets better soon.

I'm really glad she is recovering, but unless a sample of the food was tested or there is a known problem of a bad batch in your area, it seems rather unlikely that the Felix was the culprit. Much more probable that it was something else she ate (rotting wildlife?) or a virus of some sort.

I had a cat who did something similar, she was usually fed dry food but following a dental she had to have wet food for a little while. The first time I gave it to her, it was such a novelty for her that she practically inhaled it, promptly made herself sick and then 'scared' herself from eating anything else for a couple of days in case she was sick again.

My cat will only eat James Wellbeloved kibbles and has never been sick (so far) . Old cat would only eat Whiskas pouches and was sick at least twice a WEEK.

I have no idea what the answer is! but try some kibbly stuff-

Shouldn't have read OPs update while eating my lunch! Hmm

My cat adores felix but gets the runs when she has whiskers. Think it just depends on the cat. I would probably get her checked over at the vet if she keeps being sick/is off her food.

Mine usually throw up their food if they've been greedy bastards and just gobbled it too quickly. Of course she's not going to want anything straight away- she's just been sick!

How do they know the food poisoning was from the Felix cat food? Was it tested? And why did the vet suspect Felix when it seems more likely to be from something else? Has there been other cases?

I am so glad Holly is recovering.

Cat probably ate something 'else' as they do, like a mouse/bird/frog !

Very unlikely from a fresh pouch of food. Could have caught a bug.

Holly is much better thx everyone. She had food poisoning from the felix food i gave her. She was that ill i had to syringe feed her on special high energy food from the vet. My litte precious is now eating and drinking by herself now and just waiting for her to pass her first stool since her enema.

Good luck OP, hope your cat is ok, mine will only eat Felix, turns his nose up at anything else, even the high end stuff!

Its been 24hrs since she hasnt ate or drank. I rang the vet and they suggested boiled chicken, she is interested in it but not eating it. I usually feed her on dine desire which is a top quality food with no preservatives. She is booked in to the vet in the morning.

Does she go outside? It's not unlikely that she's eaten a mouse or something else repulsive overnight, which has upset her stomach. I wouldn't worry about her being sick once as long as she is otherwise happy. Cat food is treated at very high temperature, and will be much less likely to upset her stomach than the flies, mice, pigeons etc she'll investigate outside.

Ahh fair enough, plain chicken and rice will get her eating, if that doesn't work then she needs to see a vet. My cat thinks she is a panther brings me fuzzy half eaten presents, yesterdays offering was a rabbits head and legs...

Report
Imnotmadeofeyes · 04/04/2014 09:31

highway that's why I added the disclaimer of 'fussy' Grin

My cats have no intention of following a high quality diet and have turned their nose up at the (fricking expensive) ones I've tried them on. I'm sure it's spite to embarrass me at the vets!

I do insist on the higher ends of the felix range that at least look like identifiable bits of meat/ fish...... They'll always have a good chomp on a moth or spider though Confused

Mine sometimes sicks up her Felix if she has had too much. I now only give her a half pack twice a day (with unlimited dry food and water)
