AIBU?

to have used the shower?

I have a membership at a niace gym.
mon-fri it closes at 10:30pm.
Tonight when I went to use the shower the cleaner asked me if I wouldn't mind using one on the right hand side as she had just cleaned the ones on the left hand side. All the showers on the right were in use and there were 2 women ahead of me in a 'queue' to use the showers.
I said if it was nearly closing time and there were available showers then I would have no problem but seeing as it was 8:30 and I was going to have to wait then I would be using the left hand side ones as they were available!
I pay £55 a month to use this gym. aibu to think I should be able to use an available shower 2 hours before closing time??
I complained to reception and the guy working said he would mention it to the cleaning staff but "at the end of the day they all want to leave at a reasonable hour too"

c) just respect the fecking cleaner. Be kind. Be thankful that you are a member of the gym and not cleaning it.

Poppyseed - I'm in London and £55 per month is an expensive gym! I've recently done my research and not chosen this chain.

What kind of argument is that anyway, the cleaner would have been out of order even in a cheaper gym. Yanbu OP.

Well to be fair.. The amount of threads on here who think a cleaner is the automatic response to messy slovenly feckers it's hardly surprising.

Pah. Just don't respond well to "naice" + boast of expensive gym (which seems inexpensive to me in comparison with my local London gym). Sort of weird reverse snob stealth boast which screams lower middle class insecurities.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this. Maybe it's just that bloody naice word.

&55 a month is an exoensive gym. I pay £22 a month and still expect to have use of a shower

I agree about £55 per month being expensive and I don't think OP is being unreasonable at all.

For all you disgruntled cleaners, why is the cleaners time so much more important an OP's time?

Report
ICanSeeTheSun · 03/04/2014 23:29

I am not disgruntled I love my job.

I just don't want people hurting themselves, I use a lot if PPE to clean and it would be irresponsible for me to allow someone to either slip or be in contact with the chemicals that require me to use PPE.

It wasn't about chemicals though, ICanSee. It was about the cleaner wanting to get home on time....

We are not in London, but membership of our local gym is £26 per month with no joining fee. Yes, I call £55 per month expensive.

It's not about being a cleaner, it's about being a customer and needing use of a facility during the mid part of an evening's opening hours. It's not as though it was 15 minutes off closing and no queue.

Say it was a petrol station with seven pumps and part way through the evening shift the staff closed three pumps and let queues build up at the remaining four. It might save them time two hours later, but it's not giving good customer service is it, let alone a service that's being subscribed to.
What about a childminder or nursery not changing a nappy in the last 15 minutes of session because they were busy cleaning down the changing stations? Hmm

If it was on the final rundown to closing time and some showers had been cleaned so the OP was asked to wait in line behind one or two people, then I'd say the cleaner was being reasonable. This is nothing to do with the cost or the job.

I wouldn't discuss cleaning with customers but obviously cleaners should stand head bowed until it's deemed alright to enter.

The cleaner was probably just following orders, and it's the management that need to sort it out. That's why I think you've got your arse in your hand (yes, it's a great expression isn't it!), because you are taking the criticism as though it's aimed at the cleaner, or cleaners in particular. My criticism isn't at least, I think it's a rota issue, that management need to be made aware of. If they aren't, and don't do anything about it, the cleaner is going to get unnecessary aggro aimed at them from disgruntled customers when they're just trying to do their job, but their job is being mismanaged.

They should arrange the cleaning for after the gym closes. Not completely of course, but at least to finish after closing.

Why is the cleaner getting bashed and not the guy at reception.

All the cleaner did was ask the OP to use a diffrent shower for what ever reason.

It was the receptionist who made out the cleaner just wanted to finish on time.

It does make me laugh on threads like this when cleaners pop out of the woodwork and turn it into a rant about how the public treat cleaners, because they have a chip on their shoulder!

I think I might be a member of the same branded naice gym as we too pay thereabout that much as a family.

Id flip my lid of I was told I could not access a facility whent he gym is open, especially so early in the evening. I would have used the showers, you bloody well pay enough, and if its anythign like ours they always cutting back and trying to sell you stuff.

The oly thing that closes earlier is the lounge for food and drink orders but you can still sit in there.

Blimey

How do you know the cleaner was following orders?

They have no right to precent access to something that has been paid for.

We have cleaners about all the time.

£55 is very expensive for a gym (I am Central London and the going rate round here is £40 - admittedly not a super chain like this one). If I paid that price, I think I'd expect a clean shower each time I used them, this not a dig at cleaners, but the gym should be staffed to provide exemplary levels of cleanliness.

I pride myself in my work and would hate anybody to use a dirty shower. I check these areas around about 5 times during an 7.5 hour shift.

My (Corporate) gym membership is £55 a month at a well know leisure brand. (Think non corporate is a lot more).

There's no way I could see this happening at my gym. Like you, I would have just used whatever bloody shower I liked and then complained to the manager as obviously the receptionist wouldn't have got anything done.

This used to happen at a gum I was a member of. Gum was also a well known chain and was around the same price.
Cleaners would do one side of the showers first and then the other and would direct you to the shower they wanted you to use. What used to really annoy me though was the fact that they were all wearing headphones listening to music humming along to whatever they were listening to. It also seemed very few of them spoke good (or indeed any) English. Hmm

But what was really really annoying was when they washed the showers they used a pressure washer type thing with cold water. If they were cleaning the shower opposite you the spray would bounce back and over the door of the showers drenching you in cold water. On several occasions as I came out of the shower I got a cold soaking. The cleaner completely oblivious as she had not heard due to her music blaring from her headphones. Despite my complaining several times nothing changed. I simply stopped using the showers preferring to go joke and shower there and then when my contract came around I did not renew.

What on earth are you complaining about, Op? Confused

The cleaner had just cleaned the showers on the left and asked if you'd mind not using them.

Nothing about going home on time, nor did she physically prevent you from using them. In fact, you refused to take any notice and used them anyway. Up to you, I suppose.

So why did you complain to Reception? Why did you post on here? And you're seriously thinking of taking things further?
