That's it really, I'm still fuming.
We had a discussion beforehand & I asked him to make sure DS didn't have a late night.

If it was a social thing and a meal is not see the problem.

Given he was dumped in the corner with the iPad and it had nothing to do with any occasion or activity it takes the piss.

Wait a minute, he took your 7 year old to the pub so he could drink with mates? Did they have dinner or was it just so your husband could meet friends for a pint?

It was just so he could meet his mate for a couple of pints.
No meal.

In your position I would not have been apologising to husband.

I think if you're going out for a meal, big family party, if it was football and your son loved the football it would be different or even a quick 1 or 2 drinks with a friend or family member during the day it would be ok. For your husband just to go out for a drink with friends while your son get's ignored? Fuck that! Sounds like he needs to grow up, why was it so important that your husband went to the pub or was it just because he was invited?

He has a child, his social life can't be the same. And anyway do most pubs (even the one's that sell food) not have a 8.00 - 8.30 chucking out policy?

Quite honestly I'm not surprised your son didn't enjoy himself. What a boring way for a 7 year old to spend an evening.
