Today we watched Peppe pig for the 1st time.

The story line went like this;

Peppa and george were jumping in puddles.
Daddy pig's football shirt got muddy.
Mummy washed the shirt, Peppa put her red dress in with the shrt.
The shirk came out PINK!
Daddy pig came home, Mummy pig said she needed to talk to him, Daddy pig said he didn't have time as he was going out to play football Hmm
Daddy pig saw the pink football shirt, he said that must be one of Mummy's dresses because it was pink.
Peppa said there is nothing wrong with pink.
Daddy said pink wasn't a good colour for a football shirt, daddy pig asked george if pink was a nice colour, george said "yuk"
Daddy pig desides to go and play football in his white work shirt dispite having a perfectly good football shirt that just happened to be pink
No doubt Mummy pig had to deal with washing the mud out of the work shirt.

Aibu to be shocked by this gender sterotyping?

I have a 1 year old ds, he has pink clothes (and blue and yellow and purple and green) he plays with dolls, he has fairy wings, he also has cars and farm animals and balls.

I don't want ds to think that only dresses come in pink and boys should think that pink is yuk.

I live in a country where gender sterotypes not as common as in the UK so my opinion is maybe skewed.

I think she's on MN Grin

As they ARE pink, you'd think they'd be a bit less judgmental about the colour!

I might try another episode then as it sound slike it isn't always such a stupid message.

I would like ds to watch the occasional tv program, English is his 2nd language so programs with lots of talking are good. He loves in the night garden but I am looking to find something where he hears more English conversation.

Daddy pig is really into Italian football with his favourite team being Catania. Their biggest rivals are Palermo who play in a pink kit.

This. It'd be like wearing a Man Utd kit as a Liverpool fan.

That's a very long rant based on ONE episode OP. WhileI agree that the message of that particular episode isn't the greatest, the series as a whole is far from sexist.

If anything, males are portrayed as rather inept generally. It is Miss Rabbit who runs the fire service and pilots the helicopter. Mummy pig is much more capable than Daddy Pig and male characters often cook lunch and go to the supermarket.

You picked the wrong episode- my favourite is the one where they go to the fair and mummy pig wins everything- including the game where you have to hit something really hard with a hammer to ring a bell and the stallholder tells her she won't be able to do it Grin

I have to say I don't generally find PP too bad for gender stereotyping, Mummy Pig working while Daddy cooks lunch for instance, but this episode is rather sexist.

i wish I could find more pink clothes for boys. I often see girls' clothes for toddlers that i'd love to dress mine in (wouldn't go as far as actual dresses or skirts) but they'd get funny looks. ds2 1 does wear tights though!

I disagree and I sometimes think Peppa Pig is a bit hard on old Daddy Pig but they have nothing on the marginalisation of Mr Boot in Apple Tree Farm.
