AIBU?

To think there is too much over thinking about music/tv/celebs?

All I seem to come across on here is the Omg brigade flapping about Robin Thick, Twerking, Miley Cyres tongue.

People wanting to complain, they're offended blah blah blah.

For goodness sake, it's like one upmanship on who is setting the world to rights.

Aibu?

I hate the whole celebrity culture thing and feel like we have moved into dangerous territory where online porn and the expected overt sexuality of pop stars is totally changing the way our kids view sex. I am 38 so I can ignore it, and not feel like I should be a certain way as that's what I am seeing in media and online, but if I were 13 and trying to figure out who I was, this would really screw me up. I read an article recently where the author interview a bunch of 13 year olds in a grammar school somewhere in england and asked them to come up with 5 words they associated with sex and the top word was anal. That is appalling. I don't want my son growing up thinking it's normal to expect that from girls, or that sex should be violent, or my niece feeling like there is something wrong with her as she has pubic hair or doesn't want to have anal sex or doesn't enjoy being pushed about.

I am deviating a bit but I think it is all part of a bigger problem, and it scares me.

But for some of us it literally (proper def - not new OED) doesn't matter -it goes over our heads because we choose not to listen to crap...

if we all don't listen, if we all don't buy it then money will not be made and it will die a death... it is only because lots of people choose to sensationalise this stuff publicly that it makes money and encourages a load of copy-cat crap.... so stop posting about it, stop buying it, stop quoting lyrics and pointing people at youtube and it WILL go away a hell of a lot quicker...

Wow. Popstar in offensive lyrics shocker.

Won't be the first time, won't be the last time. Clever manipulation to make sure HIS song is talked about.

You go ahead in your little fairyland world then - if you don't like the sound of the rest of us sticking up for women, for rape survivors, for survivors of violence and oppression, then don't listen. You just tiptoe outside and go make some daisy chains, and pray it never happens to you.

daisychain01 - how on earth is it helpful to tell people to just not have a TV or turn it off? If you don't want one, good for you. But I actually quite like watching TV and would prefer not to have to turn it off when offensive BS gets put in front of me. Turning a blind eye is a ridiculous solution to a problem. Passively ignoring these things is how the rot continues. People are just too bloody apathetic these days and accuse anyone who actually tries to stop the spread of misogynistic, violent and damaging images of women of being joyless, trying too hard or thinking too much. It boggles the mind. As MorrisZapp said up thread, the problem is people not thinking enough, and certainly not acting enough.

How will things ever change if no-one takes action? Confused right back at you!

YANBU, if people are offended the can always use the off button. Dont just sit there and then say how dreadful it is.

Best way to rage against this stuff is cut it out of your life - get rid of TV altogether, no seriously!! We haven't had a TV for years, because it is full of vile trash like that.

I havent got a clue who Mikey Cyrus is nor do I care. Our DS doesnt know or care, he thinks people at school are "saddo's " who go on about that stuff. Is he any less popular? No he just has some really good friends who think like him and don't find that stuff interesting, clever, etc.

Im genuinely shocked by the reference above to the ripping up of female parts, thats horrendous, why pay to be horrified and be stressed that DCs are being exposed to such pernicious bile.

So many of our friends say "i wish we didnt have TV, hate it!" But then dont do anything about it [thiconfused]

2013go Sorry that happened to you. Sad

I do this on every thread about this but here goes. You want to know if Robin Thicke meant to degrade women, let's ask him?

“We tried to do everything that was taboo. Bestiality, drug injections, and everything that is completely derogatory towards women. Because all three of us are happily married with children, we were like, ‘We're the perfect guys to make fun of this.’ People say, ‘Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?’ I'm like, ‘Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before. I've always respected women.’”

So, Robin, go fuck yourself. Also that's not his wife's arse he's groping

darkest eyes i agree with you that celebrity culture could do with a massive shake up, but if you say the OP is BU without actually hearing the song and just going on what you have read about it, you are just jumping on the band wagon. Which means you are making the OP's point for her!

There is no denying that the song is sexually aggressive, but it is not about rape.

notany DH is a lot older than me and hes mentioned the Diana Ross thing a few times. He says Mari Wilson had the better voice.

notanyanymore · 20/10/2013 23:41

Diana Ross? Seriously??! Despite the fact she used a sexual relationship to gazump better singers out of the way so she could be the lead singer even though her vocals were worse... and obviously used her sexuality in her promo vids?! I can't even be arsed to argue to the toss.

notanyanymore · 20/10/2013 23:36

Madonna didn't simulate sex to sell?! hahaha BULL SHIT! and I LOVE the unedited version of Thickes video, I found it much less offensive then the edited 'played down' version 'allowed' in the public arena that essentially down played it so much the men were showed as being 'back on top' and the women just as 'chattel'. that was not at all what I got from the original version.

I don't want to hurt or offend anyone or be goady at all.

'You know you want it?' is that standard rape tag? I don't automatically think rapist when I hear that, no.

'You're a good girl''. I don't think rape when I hear that either.

The edited version is the only version I've heard. Unless I deliberately went looking for the unedited version I'd have no idea. I still haven't heard the unedited version btw. As I said, unless you purposely seek it out you won't hear it. There are probably hundreds of songs/videos/movies that remain unseen unless you go looking for them. Banned movies etc, I've heard of them, do I go looking for them to complain? No, I'd be there all day.

To add though, part of me thinks - naturally attractive women dancing can't honestly help but be sexy and gorgeous!

I think what I don't like and differentiate between is when its commercially manipulated for that xtra "knowing" sleaze-factor.

I agree with GeeTee. I don't see Robin Thicke's song as about rape actually! I think its also v. sexual, and just a very good typical pop song

(I hate the company Beats or whateveritscalled using his song to sell some music techno gear - I think that is disrespectful and vile, urgh).

Overall, though, I don't like the explicitness of a lot of modern music.
I remember Blondie, so beautiful, so gorgeous - but she didn't have to simulate sex with anyone on stage - as far as I remember. Same with Chrissie Hinde, Madonna (even!), and of course the classy ladies of Mowtown (Diana Ross) nothing could be further from their promotions.

They had their own beauty and class.

It was a kind of stand-alone quality. Not always beckoning their audience to sexually relate to them. That's what these new pop videos and promos - straddling porn if you like - do. They are the next level of commercial "selling". You "sell" your body in the same way, each time more extreme in attempt to get that base connection ...

OP, my rapist said he wanted to rip up my cunt. Do you get it now? why this song could possibly be offensive?
Let me tell you, I didn't find that 'very sexual'.
Yep, I'm in the 'OMG brigade' when I basically hear my rapist's words every time I hear this repulsive, misogynist song. No apologies for that.

There's bloody loads of other stuff on here!

OP - you were more pissed off with people's 'boring' complaints than you were about the 'unacceptable' lyrics.
You know where your attitude goes?? What are you actually saying? That 'yeah yeah it's unacceptable but let's not be humourless about it, let's not be angry, let's not make a fuss' attitude? Let's see, where does that end up?
It ends up with rape apology
It ends up with victim blaming
No, I don't have a sense of humour about those things.
I don't think your attitude is clever or helpful.
My dd (3) is growing up in a world more full of this shit than ever before, and other women- like you- are going to tell her she needs to just shrug it off? Bollocks to that.
