AIBU?

to be upset that I can't cancel an order for glasses two hours after I made it?

Had an eye test at Boots Opticians and got a real hard sell on some frames. I don't normally buy expensive things on the spot, but, foolishly, I felt guilty - the sales assistant had followed me round and looked really crestfallen when I said I wanted to go away and think about it.

They were £200.

I came home and I can get the same frames with the same lenses for £76 and a 100 day no quibble money back guarantee.

I rang and tried to change the order but was told it was too late - 2 hours after I had paid for them - because the order was already with the supplier. Customer services said the same thing.

I'm really upset, I know I shouldn't have let myself be pressured and should have followed my instinct and taken a bit more time to think and find out if I was getting a good deal.

I'm posting this to warn anyone else.

Do you enter into a contract when you pay?

Although if you were followed & given a hard sell, I would think that that would negate it?

Definitely emphasize the hard sell...
Not on...

If you got the frames & lenses separately, is there any way of getting them put together cheaply?

I know this factory is open on a Saturday so they will have stated the order. You enter into a contract when you pay for them. Which branch was it? I'm sure they would be unhappy that you felt pressurised.

That's why I don't go to boots, just too expensive. Much prefer specksaver. Bought some Robert Cavalli frames for £25 in Tkmaxx and just paid for my lenses £39 and £10 fr eye test as I had a voucher. They don't do the hard sell

Awful customer service.

We use specsavers who are fab, my dad got some new glasses (with complex lenses) and after a couple of weeks really wasn't comfy in the frame he picked, went back to get another pair but went willing to pay because it was his bad choice not something they had done but specsavers wouldn't have any of it and changed them free of charge AND refunded the difference in price.

Hope you get boots to listen!

There is no law. I dont really think they are being unreadonable. They dont have to offer a refund just because you changed your mind. Some offer a refund or exchAnge as goodwill but legally they dont need to. I do know how it feels to be stuck with something i wish id never bought but i dont think theyre being unreasonable at all. You ordered them and have now changed your mind.

There may be no law but good customer service says it is worth doing small things like that to keep custom. I bet next time the OP needs an eye test she won't go to boots. I would also imagine she will advise family and friends not to go there either.

Some companies seem to forget that to get repeat custom and reccommendations they have to sometimes go that little bit out of their way.

My Dad was a lens and prism maker (not for glasses but for gun sights/surgical equipment etc) and always said that glasses were a complete rip-off. The lenses do not cost a great deal to make at all and all the cost is in the frames. Since you know your frames are being sold much cheaper elsewhere it would seem Boots are really ripping you off. Also I don't believe for a second they have started making them. They won't take long at all to make and so why then the huge delay for collecting them?

Nanny I have a very straightforward prescription for mild short sight.

Cappuccino I asked if I could just have a refund on the frames... answer was no.

" it seems a bit odd that it takes 5-10 days for the branch to get them yet they are being made up within the hour"
I'd be pressing that point very stubbornly to the manager, and making it very clear that I simply didn't believe that the order couldn't be stopped. I'd also be complaining long and hard about the hardsell (maybe drop the words 'staff retraining' in a couple of times too). Continue to press them. They're trying to make you go away and accept this shit, make it clear to them that you will not go quiet.

Oh, yes, also use the 'Is it really in Boots' interests to make this sale but lose a long-term customer?' line. Not just to this branch's manager, but to the Chief Exec in a letter, as suggested earlier.

when things are custom made like glasses wedding dresses personalised stuff you do not have the same rights to return under sale of goods act only if they are faulty or fail to last

however I am not sure that the order would have been started so quickly but ready in 5-10 days suggests made in 2 days and 3 days delivery back to boots

And others have said, maybe somehow this link should find its way to Boots Twitter and Facebook pages....
Specsavers might like it too!!

I can't understand why they said that Shapechanger. They could try and find another frame the lenses would fit into.Maybe they're too busy to try......not great customer service!

  1. Ask them why, if they started the order within two hours, it is going to take up to ten days to get the glasses to you.

  1. Ask them why, bearing in mind you feel strongly that you were pressured by a 'hard sell' by a member of their staff, they won't at least match the offer you've seen elsewhere.

  1. Ask them if refusing to make the goodwill gesture of matching the online offer at a cost of around £100 or so is worth losing your and your family's future custom, plus that of everyone else you will tell about this.

I had exactly the same problem a few weeks ago, I was in for an eye test with my daughter and whilst I was in with the optician the
pressurised her into a very expensive pair of glasses. Tried following it up with them but didn't get anywhere. The stupid thing is they have now lost my custom and i wear varifocals so expensive and I have told everyone I know.

The 10% might be the way to go, by the look of this :(

I like our local specsavers. They actively discourage you from paying for stuff that wouldn't be beneficial and explain why. They also retested and replaced a lens for free when my prescription changed within a couple of months of buying some varifocals.

Specsavers are brilliant, for future reference.

I went in and paid for some glasses. I have NHS exemption, so just had to pay for the coatings. £40.

A week later, I went back because they weren't right. They did a complete, full re-examination, then referred me to the hospital because my prism was fluctuating wildly and they weren't happy. They told me to keep hold of the glasses, but don't use them, and if I haven't used them in 3 months (the expected appointment waiting time), they'll refund them.

A week after that, a woman phoned and said that although I'd paid £40 for the glasses originally, she had spotted a different way of combining the deals available, which would bring the cost down to £7, so she was refunding me £33 and could I give her my card number? Unprompted.

Excellent service.

Unfortunately, you can't get out of a contract because it is a ''bad bargain".
