To be really pissed off at this parking attendant

I parked in a private car park before and was stood at the pay machine ready to buy my ticket, there was a man in an unmarked hi vis vest sort of loitering around but I assumed he was doing building works so took no notice. Another man shouted me over from his car window and gave me his used parking ticket which didn't expire until midnight, for which I was very grateful! I took the ticket, checked that there was no reg plate on it and put it on my windscreen. The hi vis vest man was sort of looking at me at this point, so I smiled, made eye contact and continued sticking the ticket on.

I got out of the car and proceeded to walk out of the car park and as I was almost at the gates the hi vis vest man came running up to me and shouted "the tickets are non transferable you know" I apologised and said I didn't know and it was the first time I'd parked there (it was and tbf there wasn't a sign anywhere saying the tickets weren't transferable).

He then gave me a lecture very smugly about how he "should give me a ticket" and how I "thought I'd got away with it" in an extremely patronising tone, basically making out like I was trying to con him out of money. This royally pissed me off considering he physically saw the whole fucking thing and could have mentioned it any time! I duly apologised and paid. He then said he'd have let me park for a pound if I'd owned up.

I know it's trivial, but AIBU to be seriously pissed off this man has made out I've tried to do him over?

I wish I'd told him to give me the fucking ticket.

Unless there are signs saying tickets are NOT transferable then they ARE. It has to be explicitly stated that they are not transferable, either on the ticket, on a visible sign or both, in order for it to be valid to charge/fine people for doing do.

Before his current job my DH used to be a private car parking attendant for a while.
He says NO WAY should any money EVER be handled by an attendant, and unless the ticket says Non Transferable (or you have to enter your car reg into the ticket machine), you are perfectly within your rights to use time left on a ticket.

You should write to the local council and report, as either the attendant is on the fiddle (pocketing cash) or he was a scammer not officially employed there at all.

I think the no returning within x amount of time is to stop people taking spaces all day when they are meant for short term shoppers.

I think that's a good rule in places where there aren't many spaces, stops people just feeding the meter while they're at work or driving round the block and going back in the space.

I've no idea if these are enforced but there are several near me.

I've given away tickets in the past, once when I realised that I'd paid many £££ for a ticket and was in totally the wrong car park . However I know you're not meant to do it, car parks are priced to account for the fact that most people won't stay for the full time they pay or and of course there will be overlaps on busy days.

Is it not that the ticket is not transferable to another car park? I know in Cumbria there are towns that used (not too sure if they still do that) to let you transfer from one car park to another How could he prove that you didn't purchase the ticket? Was he filming you? If he had a legal right to clamp you he would have done as those jobsworths are paid on commission.

I was once returning to my car in a private car park to see a car pull up and the driver run into the store without getting a ticket. As soon as they made it in the door a van pulled up by their vehicle and started taking photos and writing on their clipboard. I ran into the shop and warned them what was happening. They were at the cashier getting change for parking FGS. He had the clamp on by the time we got out and it ended up costing them £130 to remove it, even though the cashier came out to verify their story, he was having none of it. He had obviously been laying in wait then they wonder why people do not like them.

Well I don't care how many signs there were, I would've accepted the ticket too. I'm such a criminal. Not sure what I'd do if I got caught though - that's the chance you take.

Non-transferrable tickets are a rip off. And there is another restriction I don't get. One of the car parks I use say no returning within two hours. Why??? Fortunately they don't seem to enforce it. So far....

Tickets definitely aren't transferable. The traffic attendant is correct in that. However, he wouldn't have been able to provide any proof that the ticket belonged to someone else before you. And his attitude stinks.

Silverfoxballs Unless there is a sign saying tickets are not transferable, either a sign posted up, or printed on the ticket, then tickets are transferable.

It all depends very much on the publicised terms and conditions.

I think ClaireCharlie owns a carpark, no normal person could spout that much ticket related crap....

My view on it is, whoever bought the first ticket "rented" that space for the time period on the ticket. If they leave early & you buy another ticket then they're getting paid double.

It'd be less of a problem if they weren't such robbing bastards on the whole.

in future tell him your car has a valid Parking ticket on it so piss off and feel free to issue you a ticket if he thinks he can get away with it because you will ignore it as a) you can prove your car has a valid ticket on it and b) even if he gives you a "parking charge notice" you wouldn't pay it anyway as they aren't penalty charge notices in private carparks and aren't enforceable

I honestly don't think OP got "caught out". she thought, like I would have unless posted on a sign perhaps beside ticket machine or ON the ticket, that there was nothing wrong with sharing tickets. and going by the practice of this attendant he banks on this not being common knowledge.

I did own up obligingly? I apologised to the man! Whether its obvious or not, there were no signs so technically that condition is uninforcable.

Come to think of it he didn't look like a parking attendant (didn't have a ticket machine) and he wasn't there when I went back to get something an hour later. I think I may have been scammed!

YABU - that's how most car parks operate in order to maximise their revenue. Airlines to a similar thing - oversell seats and then hope a few people don't turn up. However, that's not to say people don't share tickets as a way of trying to be kind. I do!

The issue is you getting caught and that's what you're annoyed about. Had you not been given the other person's ticket, you'd have had to pay full price anyway, so it's not as though you actually lost out. You just paid to park as is usual practice. It's galling but the guy was just doing his job.

It's not remotely obvious people shouldn't transfer tickets.

I know it now because where I live has draconian parking charges and (to be fair to them) have now put up extremely detailed lists of all the things you can't do, even in private car parks.

I think the tickets are not transferable only if this forms part of the contract for using the car park. So depending on the signing it could well be that the tickets are transferable, regardless if that was how the car park company intended things to work.

I think there is a very good chance the man who charged you £8 was not the car park attendant. However I think having got into a confrontation with him you either had to pay or drive off as if he was dodgy you could easily have come back to a damaged car if not.
