School Uniforms Have Become Too Sexy - Is It Time To Say Stop?

Seeing as the schools are finished or are finishing up I thought I'd throw this one out to everyone here. I know it's commented on before, but I thnk it's getting worse over the last while. DD1 had just finished school and DD2 has two years left and all I can say is I'm glad the DD1 has finished and can't wait till DD2 has done the same. Simply because over the last few years the uniform at their school has become what can only be described as a perverts dream. Lets start with the belts, because to call them skirts would be a lie under the trade descriptions act. Because they are nothing of the sort. They are either floaty pleated things or the bodycon style type. And are ass level of course being so micro short, with only a few exceptions. Not rolled or cut, but bought that way. So no hope of any teacher ever correcting that in class. Because they go into class like that. Then it's either tights or socks. Tights vary from the thin sheer black type to various patterned styles, with some girls towards the end of the school year turning up in those horrendous mock suspender tights. The epitome of tartyness and totally outrageous for school. Socks are black, always worn long. Knee high and over knee. The over knee type with coloured ribbons on them. Footwear is usually standard, but heels have been known to be worn too. Not kitten heels either, but stiletto. Health and safety surely must be compromised with those. Shirts are too tight with buttons open, ties hang loose and not done up either. Blazers if buttoned hide the skirt giving a view that would suggest no skirt is being worn, the same with the school jumper. Down over the skirt, whether it's deliberate or not, is the worst possible look when they have the knee socks on. Coupled with full makeup, hairs all done up, fake tan, etc, it's just gone beyond what is appropriate for school, in my opinion. I'm not a killjoy, but the sight of these girls going to and from school and hanging around town during lunch or after school dressed like that attracting attention form the older male is a poor reflection of the school. One local school has skirts well below the knee, but the girls in it are considered 'square' by the girls in our school. I mentioned in at the last parents evening, 'we know about it' was the response. I'm sure they are as they see it every day. But so far have done nothing to fix it. DD1 was no worse than any of the other girls, but she was never going to listen to what I had to say as her peers decided that for her. And the school allowed it. Same goes for DD2. Especially as it's a co-ed school I would have thought they'd have nipped this in the bud. I do feel this a recent trend, when I was at school not one part of it would have been tolerated. Now it's the norm, I shudder to think where we'll be in 5 years time. I think it's time to say enough is enough and sort this out once and for all. Anyone else feel the same way?

Teenaged girls have always wanted to sex up their school uniforms since forever. They are trying to tell us that they want to look like the women they clearly think they are, and not little girls. Of course what they actually end up looking like is something else altogether, but I'm sure we all did it, so let's get it into perspective.

Personally I would abandon all school uniforms all together - I find them pointless. Worn wrongly, and given all attempts to sex them up, dumb them down, roll up skirts, pulling down ties, leaving shirts untucked, trainers or stiletoes in place of appropriate shoes etc, they all look bloody awful and the whole attempt at cohesive business like 'smartness' becomes a counter-productive dog's dinner.

I'd just let kids where whatever the hell they wanted - outrageous hair, the lot. My only rule would be that they should look 'decent' in terms of the amount of flesh visible.

och Branuleuse if we did that then they wouldn't be the right jeans teenagers are so caught up in apprearance (sp) sometimes that whatever they were isn't right that is why we have girls in teeny tiny skirts and high heels as they are trying to stamp their individuality on uniform, and the kids that don't conform are teased anyway, it is a bloody minefield

No, it's not like that around here. My daughter's secondary is very strict on their conservative uniform - one type of skirt allowed, which must come down to the crease at the back of the knee, flat black shoes, jumper and blazer. They had a check 2 weeks before the end of term where they were all given cotton wool with make up remover on and had to line up and wipe their faces with it. Detention for anyone caught out. It's like the 1950s!

Although, i wouldnthave n issue with uniform being scrapped for older kids. I dint see a massive benefit. Smart clothes should be sufficient. Uniform at that age is expensive and often ni way of making it any cheaper.

It doesnt stop bullying at that age because they just either pick on the brand of shoes, bag, coat etc, and they see each other more out of school anyway.

I think the main benefit to uniform is for younger ones who are at risk from wondering off as they can be more easily spotted, and on school trips etc its harder for them to blend in to a crowd and become separated if theyre wearing obvious clothing.

At the school i went to we would have been excluded for the day if we showed up like that.

I have seen some girls where i live now in skirts that made me raise my eyebrows and i wondered why the parents bought them tbh. I would not be buying DD anything like it and her dad wouldnt either.

That sounds nothing like the schools round here. Stict knee length skirt policy, sent home if no adhered to. Strict hair colour, ditto.

I know one girl who left 6th form, because, although they do not wear uniform, they were told that they could not have short skirt and low tops, they had to dress appropriately. She now works in Tesco, wear she is not allowed to wear a short skirt and low tops and has to dress appropriately.

FGS, people have been complaining about teenagers wearing their skirts too short and make up since the 50s. Do we really have the energy to care any more? As long as they are choosing to do it and aren't being bullied if they don't, why is it anyone else's business what they wear?

the uniform policy isn't being enforced. There's no way my school would have let us get away with patterned tights (never mind those suspender tights!), body con skirts or loose ties. We would have worn all of the above if we thought we could but there was no chance. The teachers carried a tape measure to check our heels weren't too high and we had to ask if we could remove our blazers in class!

Not applicable to the schools my children attend /attended.
At my son's senior school (he left in May) skirts weren't allowed. Girls had to wear trousers, button up blouses, ties and blazers. The uniform was virtu ally unisex, apart from a very slight difference in style to allow for obvious differences in body shape.
My daughter (who attends a 'special school' ) wears trousers, polo shirt and long cardigan. Her head teacher would soon say something if I sent her in dressed in anything inappropiate.
TBH, I don't really understand why senior schools even allow girls to wear skirts i the 1st place. Trousers are much more practical, and seem to be worn by most females outside of school anyway.

We have only one secondary here and they are strict but reasonable on uniform - certainly nothing like what the OP describes would be allowed to pass. They recently cracked down on school trousers too, no skinnies allowed. I don't think the OP's experience is the norm.
