AIBU?

to have been annoyed by last night's wimbledon commentary? Kimiko Date-Krumm.

I thought the commentary was utterly sexist and ageist.

I swear they said, "So it seems you can teach an old dog new tricks"

"She'll maybe be getting that early night"

"There are all sorts of new gadgets for her to deal with like hawkeye".

I'm paraphrasing as I can't actually remember but still, this woman is 42 and appears to be in her prime. She's older than the others but perhaps that's due to a lack of funding for women over 30 in sport.

I expected better of the bbc.

Am also ill with a horrible cold so possibly overly sensitive, so very possible being unreasonable also. Am I alone on this one?

Sam Smith might need a few lessons in decent commentary anyway. I watched some of a match yesterday and she said of Carla Suarez Navarro 'someone needs to march her down to the opticians!'

ha, this afternoon the commentators had a stunted conversation about how forward thinking womens tennis is. a bit forced.

I haven't noticed it to the same extent for male players.

I agree though that some commentary is in general, pretty shit

AF, yes I can. Tennis, and cricket, golf etc, often have jokey sort of commentary which can end up being inappropriate.

Date-Krumm is interesting because she took 12 years out of the sport - so there will be lots of changes since her comeback.

I don't think she was ever going to be strong enough or fast enough to beat Serena Williams, but that goes for many other people. Date-Krumm is also disadvantaged by being a lot shorter.

at least neither of them do the stupid noises which make women's tennis such a joke!

hill could you see similar comments being made about a relatively older male player ?

when I have heard 35 yr old Tommy Haas referred to, it is with admiration, not snide comments

that is sexism

(Fingernail comment I can see as being sexist though)

Patronising and ageist yes, but where was the sexism?

The broken finger nail comment annoyed me too.. that was the Lisicki match.. male commentator said 'her nails do look beautifully manicured' and then turned to Tracy Austin and said 'as do yours, Tracy'... er WHAT have either of these two comments got to do with the tennis?!

Report
lurkedtoolong · 01/07/2013 07:53

I was furious when one player had a cut/blister on her finger and needed the trainer on and the BBC commentator said "Oh is it a broken fingernail?" Fuck off fuck off fuck off.

Great tennis player, lousy excuse for a human being.

Would be nice if she gave her inevitable Wimbledon winnings to the rape victim she blamed, or a rape crisis charity. But I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks Drama. I watch as much tennis as I can and I never heard that expression before!

A bagel is where a player doesn't win a game in a set. The score is 6-0 & the 0 is said to resemble a bagel - because it has a hole in the middle I suppose.

It's a bit humiliating for a player to lose a set 6-0.

seasalt · 01/07/2013 00:32

I was watching this and I didn't understand the bagel avoidance thing, what did they mean?

Carol, a great tennis player she is

Did you see her victim-blaming comments on the Steubenville rape case, btw ?

Report
caroldecker · 01/07/2013 00:31

I feel there is a real bias against Serena on MN. She is an awesome tennis player and there is no-one who can match her in the women's game today. She doesn't deserve the vitriol on here.

YANBU for the commentary however.

AnyFucker · 01/07/2013 00:26

that is a great comment, holla

I thought the commentary was utterly patronising too

why not comment on Serena stopping for a mcMassive Burger with a side order of roids ?

fucking idiotic sexist pillocks

Report
HollaAtMeBaby · 01/07/2013 00:23

YANBU. I didn't like the way the said she might be stopping for a cup of green tea when they had a break! They wouldn't have said that Serena Williams was probably stopping for fried chicken.

Barry Davies and Sam Smith were commentating.

Really crappy commentary.

Penny, generally yes, always no. Experience goes a long way.

I didn't hear it, but can believe it was awful.

However, the reason she is unusual is nothing to do with a lack of funding for women over thirty! Young people are better at sport. The end.

DramaAlpaca · 30/06/2013 18:54

I agree, it was very unprofessional of the commentators.

I agree. It was utterly uncalled for. Date-Krumm ROCKS anyway.

She got further than Nadal and Federer did!
