To wonder if my child was 'swapped' at birth?

Bless. DD2 has come out with another classic...

She's 17, doing A levels and wanting to nurse. So today she received the organ donor card she'd signed up for and then said 'Mum? They do wait til I'm dead before they want any of my organs, don't they? I mean, I won't have to donate a heart or something when I'm still alive?' Shock

Whilst her sister and I were still recovering from our hysterics over this little gem she went on to say, 'But can I donate something I don't want whilst I'm alive? Like - my appendix, say?' Grin

Ladies...did they give me the right baby? I'm sensible, practical and very down to earth (apart from being reasonably intelligent). How did I get a child that comes out with classics like this?

One poor girl in my friend's anatomy clasd said loudly to the tutor that there was something wrong with her cadaver because it had two testicles but only one scrotum! Bless her innocence.

I also have to admit that on holiday in Florida 15 years ago I asked the buffalo wings question too.

When I ask DH questions he doesn't know the answer to he just makes something up, so I have lots of untrue information mixed up with the real stuff.

Harvest

Totally. Yes...sounds like a horror film and involves a large scythe.

You can have my organs when I'm gone. Just don't fucking harvest them.

Me too. Awful term. I'm sure we all hope we won't have to do it, but also hope we won't need it, too. If we do, then the term will be the least of our troubles.

Anyone else feel all weirded out when people, when talking about organ donation, use the word 'harvest'

Totally Grin

DH wondered about buffalo wings many years ago, probably long before Jessica Simpson. I have never let him live it down, and have just reminded him after reading this thread! Grin

My ex boyfriend was very gullible thick
I had him convinced that black jumpers came from black sheep and that the sheep who lived on hillsides had evolved so that their legs were shorter on one side than the other, he never questioned what would happen if they turned around.

TinyDancer Two food clangers for Jess! This one was: 'buffalos have wings?'

From next year she can donate both blood and bone marrow, she can save a life that way and without the problems donating your heart while alive might cause(and a little more beneficial than donating an apendix)...

I had an A-Level student who constantly asked for definitions of very common words. At one point he got frustrated at having to keep asking and said loudly 'If only someone would make a book which you could use to look up the meaning of words'. When they had stopped laughing, the rest of the class pointed out to him that this would, in fact, be a dictionary and he was a couple of centuries too late with his bright idea.

The best fun I got was trying to befriend my two (then) teenage children on Facebook. The thought of the panic on their faces used to cheer me up after a bad day at work.

My only fun is pulling pranks on my kids. My DC is 17 and learning to drive, said she would like a Smart Car, I told her that they tip up going up a hill. Yes she believed, still does, I also told her that the big hill near us went from a dormant to active volcano and we should think about moving, again she believed until I started laughing. Such fun.

Jessica Simpson was questioning about whether tuna was actually chicken because it was known as the chicken of the sea. Is that the incident you were thinking of? Otherwise she's dropped two food clangers!

Ooooh! You lot are mean with the phone calls bit! Grin...

I am sooooo tempted to get someone to call her saying that they have a patient waiting for a heart transplant and that DD has reached the top of the list to donate so they need it now. (I won't do, obviously - it would panic her!)

DD1 and I particularly liked the phrasing of 'a' heart - as though she had a couple and could spare one!

Forgot to add that when we wept with laughter over the idea that anyone was waiting for an 'appendix transplant' and her sister pointed out to her that that is the one thing no one actually needs she got cross and said, 'Well tonsils then!'...

So - if anyone out there is in need of a new appendix or a couple of tonsils I have a kind hearted child that is perfectly willing to donate hers to you...

I'd get someone to leave an answerphone message asking her to come into hospital to see what she has that they might need.

Ooh, yes, do it! Grin You could send the message by text to your landline, so it does it in that spooky electronic voice.

Technically she's right. They harvest a heart once you have been confirmed as brain dead, but heart still needs to be beating via life support.

Ah I trained ( to be a nurse) with a girl who when doing a blood pressure ( the old fashioned way) put the stethoscope in the patients ears! She was still qualified to be a nurse although I think she may be a teacher now !

She has a point...think they do harvest before death. Love the suggestion of answer phone message asking her to call local hospital to say what she doesn't need Grin

Its not such a daft question. People can donate a kidney while alive, and intending to stay that way.

And in anyone donating an organ such as a heart, the organ still has to be functioning so the body is technically alive (although it is being kept alive artifically) even if there is no hope.

lol, I love the fact that OP's daughter has waited until after she's regestered to ask the question.... nowt like doing your research.

bless her and good on her foe registering!

though shoukd we be worried that this girl is part of our future nursing staff

disclaimer: lighthearted - no offence intended (you never know with MN)

It constantly amazes me how much my kids don't know - at 15, 18 and 20. Daft stuff mainly.

DH was horrified when eldest DD asked how to make a Lempsip the other day, and seriously couldn't get over the fact that she didn't know.

She was in the kitchen peering at the packet. She had boiled the kettle - at least she'd got that far Grin

If you don't know, you don't know. Yeah, you'd think she'd know by now, but ... obviously she didn't. i've probably made them for her up to now
