To wonder.............what makes a 'National Treasure'

On the back of the Ann Widdicombe thread it has been said that AW is 'no National Treasure'.
Interesting - because since the population is never going to agree on anything completely I wonder what does make for the aforementioned National Treasure.
I happen to think AW is as close as you can get to one, but I fully understand that her politics make this idea impossible for most some MN'ers. Given that she doesn't hide her views on anything - and why should she - I think that what you see is what you get with her. Might it be said that once over Jimmy Savile was a National Treasure?

"I'm sure Terry Wogan must qualify.
weeps at the day Chris Evans 'replaced' him"
Oh how I agree......! Haven't listened to Radio 2 since...

My NT nomination is Alan Bennett Smile

Celia Imrie & Michael Rosen are mine. Talented, speak their mind and don't take themselves too seriously.

I always used to Hmm when Cheryl Cole was 'The Nation's Sweetheart', and wonder how our sweetheart was someone who wouldn't be able to get a crb to work with children.

I love, love, love Terry Wogan. Definitely national treasure IMO.

If it was up to me, Bill Nighy. That man is hilarious and I love his voice.

Yes to Richard Griffiths (RIP Uncle Monty - we will never forget you and your radish) and David Attenborough. I would add Michael Palin and Sue Townsend.

Cheryl Cole can fuck right off.

David Attenborough has to be on a list of such like if it existed.

Or is he too highbrow and not popular in the cult of celebrity to warrant it from the Great British Public would you think?

No such thing... it's all down to individual perception.

Richard Griffiths, Richard Briers... Brits to be proud of.

Everyone else referred to... not in my view.

Cheryl was referred to as the nations sweetheart by some dumb ass and it stuck iirc.

National Treasures; Ant and Dec! Grin working class lads who've worked extremely hard, talented, good natured and don't fall out of a club pissed up to their eyeballs

AW is no national treasure in my eyes.

From what I can gather it involves being on TV a lot and not being so odious (in public, what you get up to in private and keep out of the press is fine) that half the country despises you.

If Cheryl is a national treasure, I fear the day when Prof Green becomes one.

Music has gone down the pan, I blame those two

Doing any sort of visit to the forces in a warzone automatically makes you a national treasure. Unless you're a politician.

I find AW both scary and comforting in equal measures

A bit like a fart in a one piece swimsuit.

Cheryl Cole has been described as a National Treasure and the only two things I know about her are; she walloped a toilet attendant and went on tv with Simon Cowell.

Staying alive for a long time.

I would agree with Carpe on AW. I might not agree with what she says but I think she is absolutely genuine.

I don't know how JS got to be a national treasure. He was always creepy even if we didn't have anything of substance other than an internal shudder to go on.

I think non shudder incuding has to be even higher up the list of attributes than non political myself.

I have a soft spot for AW even though I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than ever vote Tory. She comes accross as honest and sincere. I might not agree with her but the old "how do you know a politico is lying? His lips are moving." doesn't come to mind with her. Which is incredibly rare.

Might be worth swallowing the "poltical views" bitter pill in order to underline how that non slipperyness in a politio is highly regarded and as common as unicorn eggs?
