AIBU?

To think that there's absolutely no reason to hang anything off the back of a chair? Ever?

I know. I probably am being unreasonable in the very fact I'm getting so annoyed about such a trivial subject but I am so fucking fed up with it/her.

My MIL is a pain in the arse. She does many things to annoy me when she stays here, this is not the worst thing she does. I could name a few, like washing her feet with my gutwrenchingly expensive shampoo "because they were sweaty and I don't like your body wash" or frying shit at two in the morning waking everyone up, for instance, that would qualify right up there on the list of things that have me gnawing my tongue.

She'll hang her coat on the chairs. She'll hang her daughter's coats on the chairs. She'll hang all of her freshly laundered clothes on the chairs. When I fold it, and pile it neatly on the table to be taken upstairs, she'll take it and put it back on the chairs. It is driving me insane. Every single day. Right now, there's dry washing piled high on the back of each dining chair, and wet washing on the radiator even though I have a perfectly good airer and a tumble dryer.

It makes the place look like a fucking junkyard and there's no need for it. Makes me crazy.

AIBU? I am aren't I.

As soon as she moves it onto the chair/radiator - remove it and refold/put in tumble dryer.

You are being rather intollerant for probably a short space of time, is it worth getting yourself into a lather about? you also sound like a bit of a control freak to be honest.

I have brought mine and dh's coats in from the porch and hung them over the backs of two chairs in the dining room so they wont be absolutely freezing when we put them on.They'll go back out when its warmer though :)

Has DP attempted to explain MIL's habits ?

No yanbu, its my pet hate too.and things being dumped on the sofa, kitchen table, and dinning table.maybe you should take all the chairs away for a day to confuse her?

Folding washing is madness. I often have things over the back of chairs when I run out of airer space. Hang it up to dry, then straight on to a hanger and you never have to iron it.

YANBU
I got so sick of people dumping their coats on the back of chairs and taking their shoes of and leaving them around the dining table area - when I had kids to feed at some point during their visit. I changed which entrance we used to the house. So now we use the front door and shoes go off on the porch. And they can hang up their costs. DH used to do it too.

Using the shampoo is rude. Why doesn't she bring her own wash things?

Cooking at that time in the morning is also out of order.

Why is she unfolding folded washing? That's just weird.

And why is she doing stuff in your house? She's a visitor.

Hide the shampoo and tell her to leave everything else alone.

Why not take the laundry out of the room? Is she likely to bring it back downstairs if you take it to her room?
And hide your shampoo. Keep it hidden in a drawer in your bedroom. And keep an empty bottle for next time and fill it with cheap shampoo.
Put the wet washing in the tumble dryer and turn it on.

It's either that or accept your house will be a mess for a week but then she's gone - which is also an option!

Or scream at her Grin

Why are your mil & her daughter who wets herself (I'm assuming she's a child - not someone about the same age as your dh?) staying at your house anyway? X

It is hard when you have a routine for drying your washing and someone else has a different routine - but she is a visitor in your house and sometimes your just have to grin and bear these things. Is here anything stopping you picking up the washing on the back of the chairs and putting it on her bed? You can say you want to tidy up and get things put away?
I think the frying stuff in the night would annoy me way more than the washing issue.
Take your shampoo out the shower and take it in with you when you need it. Only leave in the shower stuff you don't mind being used. If she asks about it tell her the truth - it is expensive and you want to use it yourself - for your hair like it was intended.

YA so NBU

My MIL hangs washinh on the doors!
Not only that but on the corners of the doors so it leaves a great big dent/sticking out bit in the fabric and i have to re wash it to get rid of it. And she hangs coats on top of the wet washing. And leaves her shoes in the middle of be fucking hall so I everyone can trip over them.

I won't go on.

I'd go a bit batshit about the frying at 2 a.m.

Have you tried 'can you give me a hand to move all this clean laundry upstairs now it's done and dried'?

Punkatheart · 23/01/2013 00:27

I do this too - but I wouldn't in someone else's home.

But frying shit would worry me. Wink

Tell her to piss off then.

I've asked her, but she said she does it automatically while she potters about. She probably thinks I'm being precious. Which I am.

She doesn't bring enough clothes to last her stay, and her daughter wets herself quite a bit, so there's always washing to be done. Actually, she arrived with dirty laundry this time Confused

What drives me nuts, I've got the washing organised, I know what will dry quickest on the radiator, I know what can't go on the radiator, I have a plan because I am in charge of this household chore. DP decides he knows better and 'helps' or even worse asks DSS to 'help', [knife or gun emoticon].

Why is she even doing laundry if she's visiting you?

Report
chewingguminmyhair · 23/01/2013 00:11

Because she is BU if you have and you ABU if you haven't

This might be a bit radical, Confused but have you asked her not to do it?

Report
ihearsounds · 23/01/2013 00:04

Well instead of folding it, and leaving it on the table, cluttering up that, you could put it away. For her to be able to move from table, and then put on back of chairs, must be there for some time. So regardless still cluttering up the place.

Midnight munch, maybe she's hungry. People get hungry at weird times. I do. I obey my body and eat when it needs food. I don't wait until the next allowed meal time.

Shampoo. Move it somewhere else then.

Clean washing waiting to go in the wardrobes you mean?

Makes much more sense to hang it on the back of chairs than to put fold marks into it and take up the table top. Unless I've misunderstood ?

Friday! She's been here since Friday last week Sad

It doesn't bother my OH, he's used to the way she does things. Her house is constantly covered in laundry and coats, it's just the way she lives. I hate it! Makes me feel cluttered and annoyed.

Well, my mum drives me crazy by putting stuff on my table so, when I come to serve up a meal, I have to spend 5 minutes moving it all to the stairs first! Every time I turn round there is something new there!

It's hard having anyone to stay for any length of time and I am usually ready to kill by day 2 of a parents/in-law visit!

Smile and wave, when does she go home?

Grin
