An Unreasonable Christmas Buffet

This year I said I am not doing a turkey because I am sick of being disappointed by turkey and also am sick of all the pans/every utensil in the kitchen forming a 1/10 scale replica of K2 on the work surface every year.

DH and I said we were going to go to the local curryhouse for a curry instead. We invited MIL, my mother and my brother (who I do not like). Last week the curryhouse said they had 25 seats left, and to confirm when we knew what time for definite we would come in. When I rang back yesterday, they were full. No matter.

DH has suggested a buffet at lunchtime. I told my mum on the phone and I could hear her doing this face AIBU about a christmas buffet?

Living in Australia, I should point out that Christmas Feast is cooked on the 24th, and eaten cold on Christmas day.

Huge bowls of random salads
Even bigger bowls of prawns with vinegar
Satay
Pav.

Assorted dips, chips, nuts, sausage rolls, dim sims, party pies, spring rolls, nuggets and chocolate.

More booze than one can shake an Englishman, Irishman, Russian or a german at.

It should start at around 8 am and finish at about midnight.

tbh, it's a running buffet Christmas day anyway as dc and dh pick at all the nibbles from the minute they get up til bedtime. I have no idea how they eat a big lunch in the middle of it, plus all the chocolates. We don't have prawn rings though:)

I was in a country pub once and a young man was slumped against the wall. I asked the barman if he was ok , and he said ' he got cast earlier during happy hour and he'll get up when he's ready' apparently cast is when horses can't get up.

My mate in America told me that her SIL got her all fired up about the turkey in brine in a bucket (Nigella?) so she did it for Thanksgiving. Rang her up to ask what to do next and she told her to leave it outside overnight.

SIL lived in the North and mate lives in Florida where it was 70 degrees at night and she was afeard it would kill her family and guests. I think she ended up throwing it out because it woudn't fit in the fridge but there was talk of regularly dousing it with ice all night.

Anyway, fuck that. Turkey is horrible. We have chicken with bacon and honey and rosemary and oranges and lemons. And this year it's not even going to be a real chicken, just a joint from M&S. Your buffet is NBU.

We always have a buffet on boxing day at one of my relations. She does an AMAZING spread and it is quite famous and much looked forward to in my family. Lots of nice salads including lentils and potato kind of hearty salads. Smoked salmon. Cold roast beef. Maybe a poached salmon. Breads. Nibbles. Just loads of lovely lovely food.

last year we had brunch on christmas day and did a buffet in the evening when we had family over.it was great.no rushing about in and out of the kitchen,no trying to keep food hot,very little preperation.would have done it again this year but going to mil's.

But goose is so tasty. We still got loads of meals out of it and had to break it ip to get in into my soup kettle when it was picked clean.

It tasted like if beef was poultry. Hmmm, beefy poultry.

We have never had turkey at Christmas. Ham, chicken, roast pork,every kind of veg. imaginable, seafood, salad, plum pudding, chcristmas cake, brfandy custard.

We start about 11 am and keep going until night time

I am feeling very guilty now. I have not had a turkey in 3 years and when
I go to visit my family in January they my 77 yr old diabetic mother with glaucoma are going to do me a whole Christmas dinner none of them really like turkey Last year we were camping (in NZ) which was my favourite Christmas ever, BBQ steaks and strawberries for pudding.

I am not a good woman am I? If any of my family were on MN there would be a thread about me. To be fair my mum is very excited about cooking Brussel sprouts for my DS3

No, not in my part of the States. They are each as much work as the other though, whether it's turkey or ham, because of the numerous side dishes. Plus I do a big Christmas Eve brunch as well.

We never have turkey why would you?

We've had goose, duck, beef, pork and this year we are having lamb. I always do a gammon and make my own sausages and a pate too. We eat off the cold cuts well into January and that buffet style plate with chutney, piccalilly, a fat sausage and pate, all homemade plus select cheeses is one of our favourite meals.

I am loving the curry idea. If I ever host Christmas I shall do this or a veggie buffet.
