To suck water out of newly washed clothes?

honeytea · 11/11/2012 20:42

I know it is disgusting, but do you think it is actually damaging?

I have a really strong urge to dip newly washed clothes in water and drink the water from the clothes. I am 36 weeks pregnant and this is my first proper craving, I have been thinking about it for a couple of weeks but yesterday whilst hanging up the clean washing I was too tempted and acted on my urge.

Am I going crazy?

Still doing it after 4 children (oldest 15, youngest 7 Blush I buy a new sponge every 2 weeks - soak it in clean cold water & fairy washing liquid (current favourite flavour) I keep trying to stop! Have been very anaemic in the past (several iron infusions) but not at the moment.

Sucking sponges and crunching ice are both signs of iron deficiency! No idea why, mind.

Wow haven't sucked on wet laundry for years and years but reading this thread has given me a craving to do so right now! (No wet laundry around the house at almost 1am, unsurprisingly).

Didn't really have pregnancy cravings other than continuing to crave things I craved all the time before being pregnant anyway.

Im 6 months preganant with my 3rd child and for the past 2 n half mnths, I have had a craving of chewing washed fabric, especially when im doing laundry or watching tv. I just love the smell and feel of it in my teeth/ mouth and the taste. It has got so bad that I found an old pair of my sons pj bottoms, cut them up into squares and I keep them in a food bag so when I get the urge, its right there in my bedside drawer. If I go out, I put a few pieces in my pocket or in my bra. Does anyone else do this?? 🙈😁

With dd I ended up eating soil, sucking stones and eating wall plaster. Yummy!

Ice and ice lollies here! Can not get enough of that crunch - right at the back teeth. mmm. Frozen grapes are almost as good. I need one now. Cheers! And if you fancy a soggy flannel, you go for it :-)

Ooh, kreosote. I had a thing for that too.

My flannel sucking habit stopped as soon as I gave birth, but seem to have passed it on as DD2 is a flannel sucker. She is obsessed with it

I'm another sponge sucker. I started off sniffing them an progressed to sucking. All nice hot water from the shower. I used to sniff the washing too.

I crunched my way through bags and bags of ice while pregnant. I also drank milk constantly. I woke up one night and went to the fridge and in my half awake state gulped it so fast that I poured it down my front and still didn't stop until I had to come up for air!

The smell of creosote makes my mouth water. Blush

I think it's all fairly normal, so go ahead and suck some flannels!

I still crave the smell of petrol whilst eating chalk or bits of plaster off the walls. If I see a building site with rubble I sooooo want to go and munch on said rubble.

I'm going to buy a sponge today, my mum craved mud when she was pregnant with me so I guess I have got away fairly lightly!

Those of you who had pregnancy cravings and have now given birth did the cravings go away once the baby came out?

Early this pregnancy I could only eat sushi and green olives. Late, 35 weeks plus I reckon I just love chemical smells. My favourite is pine disinfectant - adore it! Followed by swimming pool chlorine and ecover washing liquid. I am carrying Olbas oil with me everywhere even in hospital where I am now because it smells so lovely! Wish I'd brought the disinfectant though.....

Honey with dd I used to suck cold water from a sponge. It was great. Go for it, it won't hurt you or baby :)

Jeyes fluid. I couldn't get enough of the smell! When I told my GM about it she told me she craved exactly the same thing. My Aunts and Uncles all remember her having a brown ring around her nose from time to time when she was carrying my mother.

She had no clue they all knew she'd been at the Jeyes again Grin

YANBU, totally normal and not half as bizarre as some I've heard Smile

In my last week of pregnancy I was obsessed with smelling cleaning fluids (flash eg) and sucking water from sponges! No deficiency, just yum!

It was actually the idea of sucking water out of a flannel that made me start thinking about it. As a child I would suck bath water out of the flannel whilst my mum wasn't looking. We don't have flannels we have those plastic net ball type wash things (badly described!) I do have some lovely clean IKEA flannel rags ready for the baby so I will try one of those :)

I do eat well, so far my iron has been fine but I will mention it to the midwife tomorrow, I'm glad I'm not the only one with odd cravings!

Non food cravings can be due to a deficiency though! Maybe mention to your midwife?

And yes... I'd second the idea of using something like a sponge Grin
