Recent convert to aldi,s due to price. Was halfway through a fool and reading the pot and saw it had pork gelatin. There was nothing on the front to warn vegetarians or muslims. I know it,s cheap and i expect stuff like water, sugar, guar gum etc... But why wd anyone put pork gelatin in a dairy product and aibu to think it shd have been flagged up?

You have to label read if you want to be sure of what you are eating. Gelatin and rennet are in a lot of products.

mutny · 05/11/2012 07:44

Tis ridiculous when they could be using guar gum, caragheeenan, cornflour etc.

Which put the price up and be yuk. For flour used to thicken a dessert that has to be on a shelf for a whole would not be nice.

AmberLeaf · 05/11/2012 07:52

Don't think you can blame Aldi for this!

There are hidden ingredients in all sorts of foods, things that you just wouldn't imagine would be in there.

Try shopping for a Coeliac!

Gelatin is a common setting agent. It and other animal products are used in all kinds of foods.

Learn to cook or read labels. It'll help you choose what you want better than whingeing.

bruffin · 05/11/2012 08:02

Bits it's not a hidden ingredient , it's a perfectly normal ingredient to set a dessert if you were making it at home.

Orangelephantshavewrinkles · 05/11/2012 08:06

It's cheap that's why! Lots of products do.

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 05/11/2012 09:24

It's not a hidden sneaky ingredient. Gelatine is used in lots of home recpes as well. Its not some kind of horrific mass production ingredient used for cheapness. And it states it on the label.

Narked · 05/11/2012 09:36

It's not just Aldi. Marks & Spencer used to do lots of desserts that were vegetarian and then chose to start using gelatine instead.

TheVermiciousKnid · 05/11/2012 09:40

Yabu nothong wrong woth pork!!!!!

Of course there's something wrong with eating pork when you are a vegetarian, Jew or Muslim, SoleSource!

I have no problem with other people eating gelatine, but I don't - which is why I always read the label.

Latara · 05/11/2012 09:44

YANBU because i don't understand why animal-derived gelatine is in desserts or sweets - it belongs in meat dishes only IMO.

I eat meat including pork btw.
I just don't like it in desserts!

& it is unfair on Vegetarians, & unfair on Muslims & Jews who follow dietary restrictions.

Companies could easily use non-animal derived gelatine - i believe Rowntrees uses that.

IWipeArses · 05/11/2012 10:32

I love jelly.

Trills · 05/11/2012 10:34

Jelly-like things often have gelatin in them.

Big shock there.

3littlefrogs · 05/11/2012 10:38

Loads of medicinal products have gelatin in them too.

Gelatin is an animal product, always has been.

I am not sure what the manufacturers can do other than list the ingredients on the packaging. Confused

3littlefrogs · 05/11/2012 10:39

Non animal gelatin is a pretty recent product and I think it is pectin, not gelatin.

Softlysoftly · 05/11/2012 10:44

A lot of wine makers use animal products as a clearing agent, my veggie mate was gutted when I told her Grin

MIL also used to buy milky bar mousses until I pointed out the pork gelatin, she can't read English and had no clue.

So no it's not unusual and pays to check.

Cochineal btw yuk! Pink milk has those evil little bugs in too.

HappyJustToBe · 05/11/2012 10:45

I'm vegetarian and perfectly capable of checking the labels so I don't think it needs a huge warning that I can't eat something. To be honest I think you are worrying about the wrong food - pop tarts aren't vegetarian. That's a real issue right there.
