... ahem, accidentally had sex earlier today at 4pm? Missed the last smear test and didn't want to miss this one. Don't want to embarrass myself. Would they know?

By the time you have the test done, and with the way the sample is processed it could well be fine. It's pretty rare for sperm to cause an inconclusive result, as said upthread it's actually related to lubricant use. Lubricants confuse the processing machine that prepares the samples for reading; it thinks there's lots of cells on the slide but its actually lubricant.
If you're overdue then please think about going ahead and mention it to the sample taker.

Ha ha, yes sparkling, the good old 'post bath gush' should do the trick. Love Mumsnet!

it only says to avoid sex for 24 hours if you use spermicide, a barrier method of contraception or a lubricant jelly - if you dont use any of them i.e. are on the pill, use the coil, implant, etc then it should be ok

I would squat and stick the shower up it after bath to make doubly sure.

If you experience 'post bath gush' you should be fine. Grin

Okay people, we were taking advantage of an hour of being awake, together, not working and without children for an hour (make that half an hour after taking into account dropping off and picking up said children). We run our own business so hours are odd and long. Thank you all so much for all the input seems to be the appropriate response! Think I'll have a bath tonight and risk it tomorrow. Blush Then again, I might not. I'll see how I'm, ahem, feeling.Confused

helenthemadex · 02/10/2012 20:29

how can you accidentally have sex? Did you slip and land on your partner's erect penis? GrinGrin

also [green] vaguely remembering afternoon delight

maybe mention it to whoever is doing the smear, you could tell them you had a dream sex or something like that

That reminded me of the Tony Hancock blood donor sketch.
"It might be just a smear to you, but it's life or death to some poor sperm!"

I never knew you weren't supposed to have sex before! Sure I have DTD the night before. Never seen anything on the appt letter about abstaining though...

I had absolutely no idea this was a thing, and I've had about 6 million smear tests. When do they tell you? I can't have been paying attention.

I had to have an internal (bleeding during pregnancy) after having sex about 12 hours before. I felt very embarrassed but I don't think they noticed Blush

found this info:

The best time to have a smear test is in the middle of
your menstrual cycle. It can be done at other times,
although it is best to avoid the time when you are having
your period. Chemicals can also affect the test, so if you
use a spermicide, a barrier method of contraception or a
lubricant jelly, you should avoid sex for 24 hours before
the test

I took a swab from a woman at a gum clinic and they look at it under the microscope straight away too see if there are any obvious bugs there, before sending it off for proper testing. And lo and behold, there were some wee sperm! T'was quite fascinating! Grin

It can effect the reading of the smear test and makes it much more likely you will be recalled. Easier just to re arrange the appointment than risk a scare!
