AIBU?

to be unsure about this trip to Mauritius?

DH has had a great year at work and has won a trip to Mauritius for 5 days in May, the week before half term. He'd like us to go (it's for partners too). We have dc aged 5 and 8. And I hate am terrified of flying and haven't flown in years. It's for all the 'top performers' in his company (don't know how many).

AIBU not to want to go? I can totally see why he'd like to go and why he wants me to go with him, but I think it's too long to leave my ds, especially, and might be too much for my parents (who he is planning no asking to look after them!).

WWYD??? I am torn here. Want to support him but don't want the kids to miss us/be upset. The longest we have been away from them is one night.

I wouldn't leave my dc for that long. Not that I'd have a choice as there would be no one to leave them with!

OP again - mum and dad live 500 miles away but they see the DCs regularly. DS is quite clingy. won't be 5 till April. In school FT and finding it tiring and hard work. Argh!

Go! I went to the Caribbean for 2 weeks, to get married, when my DC's were 11 and 5, they loved every minute of us being away and getting spoilt by their nana.

Do your children know your parents well? Do they see them a lot?

If so, I'd go. If not, no.

I never left mine till they were over 10 because they didn't see a lot of their grandparents and now I go away every year for a long weekend without them and love it.

I wish I'd been more selfish occasionally.

I can understand your reluctance. I wouldn't want to leave DD for that long either.

Life is too short, go! And stop using your DCs as an excuse to get out of flying Wink

8 days is nothing, come on! They are not tiny little kids and they'll be at school most of the day.

My mum left us with my gran for weeks on end at the age of 5, and even with my grandparents who we hated for a week at maybe 6 or 7.

I think you'll regret it if you don't go OP. Life is short.

Your kids are old enough to be left, they are not babies.

I'm going to go against the grain here...

Don't go! Persuade DH not to go either.

Then give the tickets to me!

OMG I'd go in a heart beat you have plenty of time to get some therapy to get you over the flying fear, Mauritius is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Don't be a woos.

Have you got anyone else you can ask to share the care with your parents for the 8 days?
Could you go for 5 days? Perhaps not though if you not keen on flying as you would have to fly one way on your own.

OP here - sorry to drip feed - dh has just told me that the trip is for 8 days. Not 5. Hmm. I can't leave the kids with my parents for that long. They wouldn't cope. That IS too long. IMO! Thanks for all replies though :)

I went in October for a family wedding and am absolutely terrified of flying so I know how you feel! Are you going direct or will you have to change flights in Paris or elsewhere? Mauritius is beautiful, although poverty stricken. Visit your GP and start doing self hypnosis. You'll be fine :-)

is there anything you can do to help with the flying. that's a separate issue from leaving the kids.

rescue remedy, calms, funny book, fave sweets?

Go. It will reflect badly on him if you dont. And a great chance for you to get to know the other partners wives.

your DC are 5 and 8. years. of course 5 days is not too long to leave them. Go.

Ugh can think of nothing worse than a holiday with DH work colleagues and their wives. Stay away, or get smashed.

Also, your children are important but so is your marriage imho.

It's only 5 days

GO!

Go, you will have an amazing time, the kids will think it's a hoot to be with grandparents, the grandparents (if they're anything like mine) will be proudly letting all and sundry know that their talented son-in-law has whisked his wife off to relax in the sun and then you get to spend time with the children at half term.
The flight is not too long, try and learn some relaxation techniques to help you with that bit, it will be worth it.
