to think this person was just having a dig at me, by saying "i wish i had nothing better to do than spend all day making a pumpkin" "chance would be a fine thing"

ok, so dds school the children are making pumpkins for halloween, so as they are still doing mornings a few of us got together this pm and carved pumpkins, it was a lovely afternoon and we made the pumpkins, gave them silly names, all the children [about 10] played really nicely, us mums had a chat and a bit of a laugh so we had a really nice time anyway on the way home from this friends house, it was school run time, bumped into a friend, who i've only known for 1 year, more of a friend of a friend but anyway.

but when we bumped into each other she seemed a bit off, said to me, "oh i wish i had nothing better to do allday other than make pumpkins"

and then something along the lines of "chance will be a fine thing"

its not as if we have spend the whole day making them, they took aout 30mins the rest of the time then children played

do you think she was having a pop? it was just her maner didn;t seem quite right, she wasn't left out of the gruop or anything as her child is at ft school.

i think shes not that happy in her job, but shes the one with a 500K house and 2 massive 4x4s, shes making her choices in life as we all are, she could easily downsize as you can buy house for half that round here.
but i don;t make digs at her.

anyway what do you think, was she having a pop?

Maybe - just maybe - she would have liked an invite and was feeling a bit excluded and is wondering if you are her friend OP?

To be fair if after having been at work all day, probably taking shit from clients or my boss, followed by a pain in the arse commute home, I bumped into someone I knew and they told me they'd been dicking around all afternoon with pumpkins, I would be envious and a bit, 'bloody hell, alright for some'.

Oh and spaghettimonster, I think the only appropriate response to your Dad is some sort of comment on his parenting skills right back at him! What was he shit at? Time to dredge it up, and aim for maximum embarassment for him...

Nah, I don't think she was having a pop. I think she thought you probably had a much nicer afternoon than her and was jealous. She was probably in a bad mood for another reason. If she thought about it logically when not in a mood she would probably conclude that yes she works hard but she thinks it is worth it for the house and the car.

I have reported your personal attack bakeyouhappy. Very nasty.

I might make a comment like that as I would love to work less and have more time with my family. Any negativity would be about my life rather than yours.

i've already said shes just someone in a group that im in, so i see her socially.
and ive only known her for a year so i'm still getting to know her.
and that i don't actually know her that well
i'm not talking about someone i've been friends with all my life since childhood!

bake you, resorting to name calling is pretty poor.

bugger, that was meant to be bold, not strike out.

I guess you just have to ignore these people. Who knows what their motives are, besides making us feel bad. There are so many people out there who do this, too...

My father today commented on my facebook status saying it was a bad day as my toddler had spilled milk on the sofa and broken one of my collectables, with:-

If he broke the TV you all might have to spend more time interacting! If you leave things out within reach of young children it is your fault that they get damaged - the things not the kids. The TV should not be thought of as an inexpensive babysitter!

It was a completely uncalled for dig, as always. I have spent half an hour forming and reforming my response about how the tv has bugger all to do with the two accidents (we don't even have tv channels!) and defending my parenting skills, but I have decided, as always, to ignore his attempts to get a rise out of me. Nice way to make a bad PMS day worse, Dad.

Never heard the chance would be a fine thing before, so looked it up.
^Chance would be a fine thing! (British informal)
something that you say which means that you would very much like something to happen but there is no possibility that it will He said I could do it in my spare time. Spare time? Chance would be a fine thing!^

Saying too much time on your hands in any way other than a jokey way seems critical, but with her second remark, I think she probably meant it more as you are lucky to have had a relaxing fun afternoon. Everyone doesn't have a cheery personality, sounds like she is a bit of an Eeyore.

Doesn't sound like she is a friend, more of an acquaintance.

Carried, I only got your name yesterday, I used to see it as Carrie Da Babi and thought it sounded like a really cool foreign name (but am obviously a bit duh).

This is the type of thing jealous people say, i have a colleague at work who asks what I'm doing, then sighs and says 'I wish I had time to do that'. Actually, we both can prioritize our time how we like, so her lack of doing it is her choice.

But don't sweat it, just add it to the 'to watch' pile and if she's not really someone you want to be good friends with, just don't seek her out.

she is part of a social group i'm a part of too, thats why i'm trying to figure her out.

if it was someone i only bumped into at the school gates, it would have gone in one ear and out the other.

tbh, only time will tell probably... so guess we will see

but tbh could without people like that in my spare time!
but perhaps it wasn't ment that way....

You're trying to work out if she's a 'friend or a foe'? Are you 9? I think you're placing far too much weight on what a friend of a friend at the school gates thinks. Or what you think she thinks. Move on.

If that were me, it would be whistful

'I wish i had the time....' would be fine.

'Nothing better...' sounds rude but it depends on the person. Maybe it wasn't calculated rude but just clumsy rude. So you will only find out when/if you get to know her better.
