Can't say I've noticed. I'm too busy raking it in off the taxpayer Hmm

I think most people bid for more than they could afford knowing that they were unlikely to get many / any tickets. It is all relative anyway, £9k to them might not be huge. Or if it was their life savings, they were bidding because they wanted to go and it meant a lot to them. I am gutted we got no tickets and will be really sad for DS who would have loved to have been there.

We're not in recession! Positive economic growth last quarter, although I will concede that it doesn't always feel like it.

Not everyone struggles in a recession

I know people who pay £24000 for one day of grouse shooting, but that is how the other half live. The recession only affects ordinary folks on normal wages. The rich people carry on living the high life

Yes, there's a recession. Not everyone is necessarily skint though. What's it to you how anyone else chooses to spend their money?

If people don't spend, we sink further into recession. Rather than calling them idiots, be grateful there are still some people in this country who have money to spend perhaps?

You don't know why they're spending that money. Maybe they've been saving since 2005 when the olmypics were annoucned. Maybe they're not planning on going on any holidays next year so they can go the olympics. Maybe they spend nothing on Sky or takeaways or frivolous electronics or second cars or big mortgages. Maybe they played the odds and knew they would never actually have to spend that much on tickets so it was an arbitrary amount really.

Not idiots. Just doing different things, living different lives to you. Bemused that you're wasting your energy on thinking about other people you don't know.

I just bought a bunch of (still fine) reduced flowers at the Coop for 20p, a bunch of oranges for 35p and a potted plant for 39p. I am chuffed with my purchases. I love bargains. But if I also wanted to go and spend some real money, or someone else wanted to spend some money - I would have no problem with that at all. Life is life. Some people are richer, slimmer and ....gasp...better-looking than me.

(goes off to squeeze oranges and arrange flowers)

So nobody should spend any money? How would the recession end then?
