AIBU?

Very pleased about the Ian Tomlinson verdict

But very surprised. I was expecting them to find in favour of the assaulting police officer.

AIBU to hope that boorish police officers might think twice before acting like a bull in a china shop knowing that the won't necessarily be protected by the law?

"you're coming across as a knuckle-dragging mouthbreather.."

Not unlike Tomlinson in his last moments."

You should be utterly and completely ashamed of yourself, laughing at this man's death. This is one of the most vile comments I've ever seen on MumsNet. What on earth made you think it's appropriate? Have you no sense of compassion? A man is dead, a family is grieving, and you are insulting his memory.

Very glad. Especially after the travesty (and disgusting lies to the media) that occurred during the Jean Charles De Menzies case.

We hold the police to a higher standard of behaviour and rightly so, hence if you kill a police officer, it's an automatic life sentence.

However that respect should go both ways and if police are found to be abusing their positions, they should face punitive actions. Suspension, demotion, losing their job is not enough and they should be given long prison sentences. For too long there has been a cover-up culture and lack of accountability, particularly in the Met. This has to change.

"hold on, so having your hands in your pockets is a reason to be hit with a baton now? or being drunk is a reason to be given a good shove? "

No , but playing a c**t in front of a line of riot police is likely to get you 'moved'. Which is what happened.

Unluckily for both Tomlinson and the copper, Tomlinson had a dicky ticker.

"dicky ticker"

Given that you've posted this on a thread that's about the inquest verdict, in which evidence was presented showing that he died from internal bleeding and the conclusion of Dr Patel that he died of a heart attack was thoroughly discredited, it seems pretty clear that you've convinced yourselves of the facts that tell you the story you'd like to hear, rather than what actually happened.

Report it slhilly. Its easy to get posts deleted on MN.

Are you always an apologist for the police ccpccp or do you have moments of rational thought?

I'm more than a tad appalled that Cressida Dick, the police officer responsible for the disgraceful cock-up that led to the shooting of Juan Charles de Menezes, is being considered as a candidate for Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

After demonstrating such a colossal lack of judgement, Dick should have been drummed out of the force; instead, this incompetent plod was promoted in what can only be seen as a two-fingered gesture to Mr de Menezes, to his family, and to the tax payers of London.

It is the remit of the police to uphold the law, but where any officer believes that they are above the law it is only right and proper that the miscreant should face the consequences of their actions if the public are to have any confidence in the Force.

ccpccp-and you know this...how? Had you spent the entire day following Mr Thomlinson?

"we will remove posts we believe to be obscene, racist, contain personal attacks or break the law, once they are brought to our attention"

It's none of these things. It's just vile.

I'd rather call you out on the thread for this disgusting behaviour and tell you that you ought to be ashamed of yourself and ask you to think for a few seconds with some empathy and effort of how that man's family is feeling. If I were in your shoes, I'd be feeling pretty shitty about what I'd written right now.

I'm not quite feeling the remorse yet slhilly. Write a bit more.

"ccpccp-and you know this...how? Had you spent the entire day following Mr Thomlinson?"

I didnt need to - there are photographs of him 'interacting' with the police prior to the push incident.

Fair enough he didnt deserve to die, but painting him as whiter than white is moronic.

knittedbreast · 04/05/2011 11:47

how was he playing a ? he was walking along, knowing he wasnt causing trouble, he had no reason to think he would be attacked by the police, if they had wanted to move him they could have just asked him to leave the area, instead they hit him with a baton and then shoved him over.

slhilly · 04/05/2011 11:50

Nope. If you're incapable of seeing what you've written is vile, then I'm not going to write more to convince you. It should take no more than introspection, after all, of the sort that the average child is more than capable of.

Put up or shut up. Provide links to these photographs and show how they show he was provoking the police (or as you put it, was being a cunt).

Don't waste your valuable time responding to mindless baiting, slhilly.

Anyone who can't do reasonable certainly can't feel remorse as they are entirely lacking in moral scruple.

ccpccp - "whiter than white?" Now that IS moronic. I suspect you would possibly be happier living in Kabul.

Since when has walking along with your hands in your pockets been a criminal offence in this country - or did I miss a meeting?

What I find particuarly scary is that if Mr Tomlinson had survived this would never have seen a jury in a court of law. The CPS had decided that there was no case to answer and the only reason a jury got to examine the evidence was beacause it went to the coroner. How many cases are there out there where police officers behave outrageously (as this one did IMHO) that never get investigated and justice is never done?
Oh and I'm not anti police and I understand they dod a very difficult job but this one clearly was out for a fight as he was only meant to be a driver that day and made sure he got involved in as many altercations as he could and then lied and lied.

There's a good description here of what happened www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/may/03/ian-tomlinson-verdict-jury-decision

Just before hitting Tomlinson "Harwood moved further away from his unit and deeper into the crowd, becoming involved in three more altercations, most of which were captured on CCTV.

In the space of six minutes, the police officer swung a coat at a protester, pulled a BBC cameraman to the ground and used a palm strike against another man, believed to be a city worker, who had been trying to get past a police cordon."

It's not police bashing to believe that they should be held accountable for their actions and not lie about events, or cover up for their colleagues.

And Tomlinson didn't die of a heart condition. "It is now certain that the fall caused internal injuries that led to bleeding in his abdomen." www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/may/03/ian-tomlinson-simon-harwood-prosecution

It was just at lunch, but back now so will post again as you clearly cant ignore.

Fingers crossed the copper gets a slapped wrist, as though he went in heavy handed, there was clear provocation from Tomlinson. Riot police and barking dogs means get out of the fucking way in anyones book except a troublemakers.

'Anarchist' pishheads. Know your place.

I am a fervent supporter of the British bobby (for personal as well as disinterested reasons) and for that very reason could not have been more pleased at the verdict.

ccpccp, please could you have the grace to stop telling lies about an innocent man who has been killed. The Met have accepted he was an innocent victim and not to blame in any way and made a public apology. Your insults really are sickening. Isn't his death enough for you? Do you have to try to blacken his name - even though you know full well the facts have been established at the inquest and make it clear he was an entirely innocent victim? And the police agree?
