to ask a question about newborn baby clothes?

hi,having my first baby in a couple of months. Got lots of clothes shopping over last few days. Now,sadly not being psychic I don't know how big he will be or for how long... What size is best? Know this may sound dim but don't want to end up with things he can never use etc. Some are by weight others by months.

I got lots of 0-3 for my first following advice from everyone and their friends.... dd1 was 6lbs 14 and looked ridiculous in the sleepsuits, so I got a pack of early baby ones followed by a pack of newborn ones to cover the first few weeks. With dd2 I thought I was prepared and packed early baby sleepsuits into my hospital bag. Well, she was only 6 lbs 6 but they were a little snug on her... long legs I guess. Midwive was a bit as if I was trying to dress dd2 in doll's clothes ...You really can't anticipate how they turn out. I think getting a small amount of newborn size is quite safe, until you know what your baby is like

Wow thanks everyone! Shall get a few bits in various newborn sizing but more slightly larger. I get extra scans for sizing so hopefully that should give me a good idea :)

Sleepsuits are all you will need to start with, plus a few cosy cardies. get some in newborn size and some in 0-3 - you will prob get loads as pressies and you can go and buy more when baby is here and you know the flavour :) Unless your baby is pretty big you will get at least a month's wear from newborn - and Next do a handy up to a month range as well which is good for when they've outgrown newborn but are too weeny for 0-3! It depends on where you buy things from too - sizes vary SO much from shop to shop.
DC4 is 20 weeks now but is wearing sleepsuits that are 0-3, 3-6 and 6-9 months at the moment

When she was born we tried to put her in a 0-3 Pumpkin Patch sleepsuit which she wouldn't fit into (she weighed 10lbs at birth!) but the newborn Mothercare sleepsuit did fit [ even more !]

My midwife actually threw the 0-3 month vest away!! Was a bit small!!
She was kinda joking, but the 0-3 didn't last very long with ds.
He was 10 lb.

just to add I hadn't bought those newborn sized clothes, they were in a bag of hand me downs someone had given me, and they looked unworn. It's definitely worth getting stuff from Freecycle/eBay/a friend with a baby a few months older if you can.

I bought mostly 0-3 ones. They were hideously big in the beginning but they do grow into it within a couple of weeks so no point buying smaller in any case I thought later. Looks pretty cute when I look at those photos now, in those oversized clothes.

I wasn't nervous about being a parent (eldest of 5 so used to babies) but I was scared about dressing them. It all seemed so complicated.

Newborn sizes do vary, as someone said. Most of the clothes I took into hospital said 'Newborn - 7.5lb'. I imagined there would be some room for manouevre with this, but when DS was born weighing 8lb13oz, I soon realised he wasn't going to fit into any of them (we did try). Luckily I had chucked in one M&S vest and babygro which said up to 1 month, 10lb, and they fitted fine, though by morning were covered in mucus and meconium and DS was a bit minging until DH came in with more clothes.

I'm another who had a DD in 0-1month (newborn) until she was 3/4months.

My advice is don't buy much and don't take any tags off what you do buy/get bought. My DS didn't wear half the stuff he had.

DD was still wearing the newborn stuff at 10 weeks. Another baby in our antenatal group was into 0-3 by 1 week and in 3-6 by 6 weeks (she is really really long). Fortunately her Mum is a good friend and has passed on loads of stuff to us.

Watch out for the weather too. We got given loads of summery 3-6m stuff for DD (born in May) and she wasn't big enough for most of it until October when it was too cold to wear.

So yeah don't buy too much 'cos you don't know how big your baby will be or how generous your friends and family will be (we got tons of gifts from neighbours too - some people lurrrrrrve buying baby clothes). Stick to things which will be really easy to take on and off like sleepsuits. Be aware that some babies with colic or reflux don't like tight things round their tummies so avoid trousers with elasticated waists and the like.

Oh and I've just remembered I bought 0-3m vests and discovered DD was swimming in them and DH had to stop off at M&S on his way in to collect us from hospital to buy some smaller ones. She wasn't that small either - 7lb 6oz. So don't dismiss newborn size, some babies need it.

DS was 7lb 7oz and was in newborn clothes for about 6/7 weeks. 0-3 just swamped him which was a bit of a nightmare as I had nothing in newborn size - just naively assumed 0-3 months would fit.

He's now 20 months and only just gone into 12-18 months in some shops' clothes (e.g. Next) but outgrown other shops' 12-18 months clothes (e.g. Tesco).

DD was a bit small so she lived in four vests and four babygro's for the first few weeks.

Things are so easy to buy and people will buy you stuff anyway so don't stress about having EVERYTHING in before hand

dd was 10lb 11oz. Newborn did not fit her At All (fwiw, IceLolly, it was a straightforward birth, so don't be scared of big babies). Everyone thought ds would be bigger, but he was a relatively small 9lb 1oz, but still went straight i 0-3 mo no problem.

My no so little girl was in newborn til 2 weeks and 0-3 until about 8 weeks so don't get too many things! We found everyone bought us 3-6 months as a gift. I'd just buy vests and babygros. Tesco do some brilliant vests which un-popper all the way like a jacket so nothing goes over the head- we thought these were brilliant! And don't bother with coats and snowsuits- a pain to put on, just use blankets!

don't buy loads, I got given a rediculous amount when 1st baby was born (hardly anything for second!)
avoid newborn unless you think you are going to have a tiddler.

We bought the up to 11lb and 0-3 months for the first but when he was born Gomez also bought a few smaller bits as it was nice to have something that fitted him properly.

Yes, definitely get lots of baby grows and vests and leave the impractical outfits for the grandparents I found a poncho much better than a coat for a tiny baby as you don't have to faff about getting their arms in the sleeves.

Size also depends on the shape of the baby too, DD2 has massive feet and long legs and is already in 3-6 mo baby grows at 4 weeks. DD1 was in newborn stuff for at least 6 weeks.

after having 1 small baby girl 11yrs ago, and the next 3 dd's being 9lb+ or there abouts, for ds i bought everything in 0-3. and he arrived weighing 6lb 15. so had to send requests out for newborn clothes which he wore until recently when he outgrew the length but not the width as he is a long baby. all legs like his dad :)

My DS was 8lbs and 6oz but he wore the newborn stuff for a good few weeks. I think it's because he's stocky rather than tall, IYKWIM.

Don't buy too much whatever you do! People love to buy baby clothes and you'll probably find that you are given loads. I barely had to buy anything for DS until he was about 6 months! And supermarkets sell packs of vests/babygros so you can easily pick more up if needed.

Whilst mine were supposed to fit newborn size they were too long for them and so went straight into 0-3 months.

Sorry OP its probably a piece of string question - best option get a few of each size - newborn & 0-3 and then arrange for someone useful to get you more of the right size.
