AIBU?

Cupcakes are not really for grown-ups are they?

Inspired by something I heard on Woman's Hour yesterday. They're everywhere. Overpriced, luridly coloured, sugary sweet glop in a paper case with a bit of dry old cake underneath are for children's parties, surely? Delicate patisseries or a decent scone with clotted cream for grown-ups, no?

IABU to be baffled by the craze?

I love cupcakes! However I make my own, rather than pay ridiculous shop prices. Buttercream is truly the food of the gods Grin

cupcakes are different from fairy cakes, cupcakes have less cake and more icing, fairy cakes are smaller, and may have a layer of icing, but not reams and reams of it, doubling the size of the cake!

I have never bought a cupcake, and probably never will.

DS and I occasionally make cupcakes, but to my mind they are not something one buys.

And I really hope I never get invited to a wedding which has one of those cupcake tower things instead of a real cake.

YANBU I love a cake but cupcakes are just an overpriced fad.

My friend had a cupcake tower thing at her wedding and the cakes were awful, really dry and sickly.

I did used to like those Mr Kipling ones with the chewy fondant on top though. I even used to suck the foily paper case to get all the leftover sponge and fondant out Blush

I bet you can buy a couple of dozen of them for the price of just one from a fancy cupcake shop

Shock OP I am disgusted with you, cupcakes are for adults and adults only! Little children can't have them because they will rot their teeth and rot their brains so adults must eat them all to save the poor little children, everyone knows this!

Now I've a cupcake craving, bad OP tsk

I loathe buttercream so am prob the wrong person to ask.

However, cupcake craze does irritate me a bit, especially all the women (like an old school frenemy) starting up cupcake businesses from home.

FFS they're just stupid sponge cakes. They will go out of fashion, prob after we reach the Cupcake Event Horizon when everyone even slightly interested in the things will have started a home business selling them, and will just have to sell to each other in an endless economic no score draw.

Seems to me it's not a long term, grown-up financial strategy.

Someone on WH compared the tendency for pastel icing with sparkles to 'My Little Pony' :) What next in this age of regression? Fairy wings for a night out? Glasses of 'pop' and free Bunty mags when having our hair cut?

Bad cupcakes are dry, bland sponge piled high with sickly sweet frosting... but GOOD cupcakes are really good. I'm a big fan of Red Velvet cupcakes (dribble).

YABU. i love a good cupcake. some are awful though. There's this supposedly posh bakery - Beas of Bloomsbury - that has lovely looking cupcakes that taste like ca-ca.

Next you'll be telling me I'm too old for the swings at the park... Grin

Cupcakes are lush, especially grown up chocolate ones topped with peanut butter icing

Don't be daft, never too old for swings. or shopping trolley races round the supermarket.

Is just mimsy sickly icing stacks I object to.

Cake is for everyone, being a cup, fairy or whole cake!

I love cup cakes but prefer to make my own rather than pay through the nose for one!
