AIBU?

Am I being unreasonable to even think about going on this holiday?

Several months ago I booked a family holiday here for this coming August. Small deposit was paid. Sadly I am now being made redundant and I am working out my notice.

What do I do about this holiday? My redundancy settlement is generous and the total cost of the holiday would only be a small percentage of that plus we have other savings.

So my problem isnt so much about the cost though I certainly dont want to ignore that.

My problem is really to do with the time. Would having a holiday already booked put a potential employer off?

The sensible side of me says I should put off this holiday until my circumstances are more certain. The more frivolous side tells me to go but to keep the cost down.

The holiday is one we all particularly want to go on so if we cancel this we are unlikely to be able to rebook the same thing at a later date - family of 5 needing 3 bedrooms.

One of my reasons for wanting to go this year is that very soon DD1 will be too old to want to come on holiday with us.

WWYD?

I agree it shouldn't be a problem, employers realise that most people book their holidays a long way in advance so will generally be accommodating.
Good luck with the job hunting!

DH has just started a new job. He didn't mention it at interview (wasn't asked). Once he had started (after a couple of weeks) he asked HR about booking some leave. He then booked the week off for the holiday we have booked. NO big deal at all.

new prospective employers will normally ask you if you have any pre booked holidays and they cant penalize you for it if you have!

New employers at this time of year should expect people to have summer hols already booked. As long as you are upfront should be fine.

In the same position. I think I just didn't get a job because I told the employer I will be way for 3 weeks in April :( but it says a lot about them so onwards and upwards.

Thank you all for such positive messages!

Lenak you make a good point about a potential employer who objects possibly being a problem employer. I hadnt thought of that.

Go on holiday and have a lovely time. Life is short and family time is precious.

I have never known pre booked holidays to be an issue to a potential employer.

As long as you can afford it go.

If you are able to get another job quite quickly, most employers will honour a pre-booked holiday. If they don't I'd question what they'd be like to work for.

Being made redundant is stressful so the holiday will give you something positive to focus on.

Take the holiday, most potential employers ask about pre booked holidays in an interview, I had a holiday booked when I was interviewed for my current job and I got the job so they weren't that bothered.

Go on holiday, it will do you good! A new employer should honour holiday arrangements and you can always be a bit frugal in the meantime. It looks lovely
