I am actually seriously really scared Sad

I have terrible anxiety anyway, but all this about the world ending in 2012 is really terrifying me.

The thread on Chat has just set me off again Sad

There are all these supposed 'signs' and things, argh I'm not going to sleep tonight!

Hi AllHail, I too am one of the biggest worriers in the world, but strangely the one thing I am not scared of is the world ending in 2012 because it's not going to happen Smile. I hope NASA's website about why nothing is going to happen in 2012 will make you feel better - www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html.

As for the scary bird dying stories happening lately, one of the theories I've read is that the magnetic north pole has shifted slightly towards Russia and upset a lot of migrating birds. Its not a sign of the apocalypse and I'm pretty sure its not a sign of Jesus coming!! The magnetic poles shift every 400k years and NASA say this shouldn't be a problem for us.

PS the Mayans didn't see the slaughter of their entire race by the Spanish coming did they? Not that bloody clever then Grin.

I do not believe humanity will be wiped out in one year. I believe it will slowly happen as we pollute the planet. Don't worry. We won't be alive when it happens. I used to be a nervous wreak worrying about things, decided there is no point. We are stocked up on supplies, but that is simply because it is a smart thing to do, in case of power down or illness.

My mum has been reading up on the Mayans as she is fascinated with all this Doomsday bollocks.

Anyhow, I have it on good authority that the Mayans did not predict that the world would end in 2012. They believed in cycles. 2012 is simply the end of their 'long cycle'.

Think about it logically, they had to stop somewhere, why not 2012?

Also the Mayan calander is said to be widely missunderstood and many people believe that the long cycle does not end in Dec 2012 but in March 2014.

Nostradamus also did not predict that the world would end in 2012. Simply that it would end as we know it i.e change. This could mean anything.

Again he is widely misinterpreted because he wrote his predictions in a riddle sort of way (can't remember the correct term, sorry). His predictions carry on well past 2012 and only 50% of his 'predictions' are believed to have come true.

I can quiz my mum on the books she reads if you like, op?

I don't understand why everyone thinks the Mayans were so clever (well apart from the chocolate thing). Probably they got to 2012 and just couldn't be arse any more.

Wasn't there something supposed to happen on 12 December or something? I was really quite worried about that - I was glad DH was coming to collect us all from my parents so we could all be together. That was crap, as are all these so-called predictions.

MaureenMLove · 07/01/2011 22:36

Jeez! Really? This is terrible!

This means that all the arguments that I have about 'making sure you revise and concentrate on your school work' is totally pointless, because DD will be doing her GCSE's in 2012 - or will she? When in 2012?

And I'm a London resident, so therefore paying for the Olympics through my council tax. Should I complain?

And most importantly, if this is really, really, real, should I contact the bloke, who I so, so so wish I'd got it on with, as did he and make it so, because it would be terrible to die knowing I never slept with him! Grin

I have heard good things about this book, "Mind Over Mood" to help with anxiety, it's a CBT workbook.

I am not wise! (though I do now feel very old Sad

But I did have to laugh at a Y8 today who used this as an excuse not to do something because he would never have the chance to take his GCSEs anyway!

Its no more likely to end then than any other time. Even it is going to end then it is all the more reason to enjoy yourself than worry about it. Do everything you could do to avoid reading stuff about those theories too.

Thankyou everyone, I realise I probably come accross as quite insane, but I read things that seem so convincing, and then find it hard to be rational. Sad

I am getting help for my anxiety, yes, I'm having counselling...not proving very useful yet though unfortunately.

Unless you're a bird or a fish I wouldn't worry about the so called signs.

I've lived through five or so occasions where some nutter or other said that the world would end, and I,and it are still here.

The calendar ends,not the world.

Remember the supposed 'Y2K bug'? Civilisation as we know it was supposed to end,and we'd become cave dwellers again,at best.
What happened? Absolutely nothing.

i feel your pain, 8 years ago i was exactly the same as you (totally convinced it was going to end in - uhm - Oct 2004 i think) but it didn't. Now i have learned, by repeated exposure to the reality that we seem to be still here, that noone knows what's going to happen, and even if they did, the best thing you can do is take a very deep breath and say SOD IT. wine helps. But more seriously, so does CBT, counselling, and when all else fails, prozac. talk to your GP about your anxiety it can be totally debilitating but it doesn't need to be.

I wouldn't worry about it. If it does end we'll all go together. Could be worse. And I speak as someone who also worries about metadisasters, when I have no real problems to trouble myself with.

Try not to worry as South says yor life could end at any time (not helpful but true) and if it is going to end then it is and there is nothing anyone can do.Just enjoy every day and forget every so called sign. The world was supposed to collapse with the dawn of the year 2000 if I remember and it is still turning.

i've lived through about 6 end of year scares

Report
QuintessentialShadows · 07/01/2011 22:18

I narrowly escaped being hit by the 159 bus, but that is by the by.

I enjoy life (sometimes) and I enjoy my children. If the world ends, so be it. It is the end, and I will not be there to mourn it, neither will my kids. So what is it to be worried about?

Report
penguin73 · 07/01/2011 22:17

wasn't it all supposed to happen at the start of 2000 too? We were ok then so sure we will be next year too Grin
