Didn't realise til just now that it went for £450,000 in the end!

Not a fan of Chris, bt if he can raise that for CIN then good on him!

amuminscotland- you are of course absolutely right- my hatred is entirely irrational and driven mainly by what they call it- and probably quite a lot of jealousy Grin

I think it's hilarious & Chris Evans is a genius to be able to get people to part with such huge sums for Children In Need. Give the man a medal - Terry too!

I can't believe some of you are Hmm at this.
It's charity fgs! Things like this raise awareness for all sorts of ill or deprived children, and I imagine there are quite a few mners whose children benefit from the millions raised every year by CIN.
If a few celebs want to donate their time for free so that some wealthy people can put their hands in their pockets, well, bloody well done to them!

anoknockingmyhousedown · 17/11/2010 13:23

Yesterday's was £65k.... so what? Why does it bother you? The children need it more than ever, so if those "with" can donate on this scale, then let them!!!

Turn it off for those who don't want to listen!

YABU it's a nonsense to be annoyed that someone with money wins a charity auction. Makes more sense to be annoyed that they can earn so much and spend it on expensive tat, but if the money is going to charity good on them.

I think some of the reactions here are tinged with jealousy about how much money people have compared to them - well, unfortunately, that's life! I think it's great that people who may not have otherwise given £60K to people less fortunate than themselves have been persuaded to part with their cash. Please also bear in mind that these sports guys and celebrities are giving up their time too which, in essence, is their money.

Oh I hate it too. One great big smug here's my huge wodge fest. I don't listen to things like this any more.

A reverse auction may have inevitably raised more whilst allowing 'normal' folk to participate Smile

Don't object at all Smile

Just stuck in 'me craw that's all.

Looks like a few other posters on here agree that it's just a bit...icky.

Thanks for all your responses BTW. I do rather enjoy MN!

Not sure why anyone would object to raising huge amounts of money for charity Hmm

It is a win win situation isn't it?

Maybe no one should donate more than you can afford to op!

YABU to listen to Chris Evans.

YABU to object to a charity auction too!

Completely agree with you Risingstar, well said!!!! Surely the only people who can 'bid' £60,000 for a drive in a sports car are multimillionaires who could probably do that type of thing anyway :/

I always listen to the Chris Evans show but I have found the last two morning shows really hard going .....

Some people who have that kind of money will be giving generously and quietly with no thought of getting a fun day in return or of anyone knowing they are doing it. Which is lovely.

But there are also (apparently) plenty of people out there with this kind of money, who can be persuaded to part with big chunks of it for these auctioned events. I think its a good thing to get the money outof them. We can be moral and say "they out to give it anyway" but some of them wont.

Its not that different from a phone-in or text-in "competition" where you're donating £1 while getting the chance of winning something. You could equally say those people should just be putting the money into a tin instead of hoping to win something with it.

they should just call it

auction for things you can buy if you are rich enough Hmm

i love chris evans, and indeed old tel but i have always HATED WITH A PASSION the ridiculously named "auction for things that money can't buy"

because, it shows entirely that if you have enough money- yes you bloody well can.

it may be a step in the right direction with everyone having a chance for £1.50. In all honestly- i would find it brilliant radio if they phoned people up live on the show to tell them that they had won. lets hope that if more money is raised with the text for a chance model they will move away from the truly sickening way it is run now.

and if they start banging on about how generous the donors are for"the children" i will scream. if that was their motivation they would chuck their spare £50k in the hat anyway- they are buying a fun time with Mr Evans because that is what they choose to spend thier money on, oh and now i think about it probably write it off against tax.

rant over- wanted to express that for years.

Thanks everything. I wondered about that - blimey can you imagine sticking 60 grand on a credit card!!!!

I agree that it's good that people who can afford it are paying lots and raising lots of money for CIN. It just seems so wierd that they have that sort
of spare cash, it's totally outside what is 'normal' life for me. And I'd like to think if I was that rich I'd already have given it as a donation rather than buying something - but I know chances are they may well have given lots of donations anyway.

So OP i don't agree with you but I can totally see where you're coming from.

I found it boring and put a CD on instead. It's great that so much cash is being raised for CiN but I don't care about golf or people who want to pay 20 grand to play golf with someone I have never heard of.

the £1.50 refers to sending a text for a chance to win something (can't remember what)

The auction annoyed me in that it went on for so long & is way beyond my means. Chris also said that peole have no idea how children suffer, erm actually some of your listeners do.
