Should I be doing anything else and what should I watch for? It's for 3.5 year old dd. she seems fine but lips like she has had a botched collagen injection and tongue is itchy and hurting. Dh should be 5 mins with piriton

Thanks tiredfeet, didn't worry me. Just good to know what we might be dealing with. She is bright as a button this morning!

Sorry to leave you worrying!
Allergies were totally new to me when my son had his reaction, I feel for you it is an enormous shock. They can do skin prick tests which give an indicator of the severity but also will (in my experience anyway) be also guided by her actual reaction. You should hopefully get lots of help and support from the allergy clinic but also I have found the mumsnet allergy board really helpful too.

Can you take her in your bed?
I always do if mine is poorly, saves you the walk and I'm at the same level with her if she starts vomiting etc.

Thanks tiredfeet. Will do. have been in and out so much I might just go and sleep on her floor tonight. Hope your ds is ok now, do they tell you how serious the allergy is after testing or just that they have one? This is totally new to me as none of us have allergies.

glad she is ok, I am so glad you called 999. It was definitely not an overreaction. I saw how fast my son's reaction developed. hopefully you will get some fairly rapid allergy testing.

you do need to keep a close eye on her for quite a while, my son had a massive reaction like that and was rushed into hospital (he was a baby and luckily I dialled 999 the second I realised his lips were swelling), a couple of hours later on the ward he had a second reaction. so please monitor her for a while

Glad she's ok! You definitely did the right thing, if she just had a rash that would have been different, but as soon as lips and tongue are involved you really have to take it seriously! I would keep a supply of piriton on hand until all the allergy testing happens, and of course avoid nuts. But I'm sure the gp will give you lots of advice. Poor wee thing, I hope she feels better soon.

And thanks for the reminder about nursery. Will do that tomorrow as well as make an app for the doctor.

Yes they called the doctor when they were here to check about piriton dosage as she probably threw the first lot up and they wanted to check they could give more.. They want to see her for allergy testing. Doctor also said we did the right thing in calling 999. I was worried I was overreacting but clearly not. They said first reaction often not the most severe, it's like you get a warning sign. Horrible and scary and won't sleep well tonight!!

Definitely sounds like your DD has an allergy. Take her to GP and ask for referral to allergy clinic. In the meantime, avoid all contact with nuts and nut products.
Be sure to tell your DD's nursery about the allergy too.

Glad she's alright. That must have been really scary for all of you.
Trust your gut instinct, it doesn't look right, call 999. Children overcompensate and when things change, they change extremely quickly.
Have they suggested you see the GP in the morning?

Meant to say I called 999 after she seemed to pass out on the sofa. all very scary!

Thank you so much everyone. She is in bed, soundly sleeping. The paramedics have been here since I last posted. They were amazing, staying to monitor her through sleepiness and extreme vomiting. Airway is fine, they gave piriton basically kept a close eye on breathing. They told us to call 999 if anything changed but that she would probably be fine. I felt bad about calling but they said not to worry and I did the right thing as it could have changed very quickly. Thanks everyone. Poor dh got back to find ambulance on our drive. They were that quick!

How is she twofalls?

999 now, as previous posters have said, her breathing could become affected and you don't want her in the back of your car if that happens.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 03/11/2013 20:02

I'm sue she will be fine btw, but if there is any risk at all that her airway may be compromised, she needs to be in an ambulance where they will have equipment and adrenaline. Plus they will alert hospital so they know she's coming.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 03/11/2013 20:00

Yes give piriton, if you have it at home, but ambulance now. They will give piriton at hospital so tell them how much you give her.

Report
Dilidali · 03/11/2013 19:57

Ambulance, don't drive yourself. They can intubate if need be.

Report
DoItTooJulia · 03/11/2013 19:47

I only ask because it's usually, but not always, the second time that you eat an allergenic food that you shows symptoms.

Allergies can develop at any time, mind.

Give her the piriton and take her to the hospital.

Hope she is ok. And you.

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 03/11/2013 19:46

Hospital now please. Fast as you can. Ambulance immediately if you think her airway may be affected.
