Academic common room

Shortlisted for teaching fellow position, anyone want to talk to me about the interview and stuff?

I don't currently work in academia, but I do work in the vocational/professional field that I retrained in. The university that I trained at have kept in touch and I am often asked back to deliver lectures on the course.

The last time I was doing this I was encouraged to apply for the TF position. I've now been shortlisted (eek!) and been given the info about the interviews and presentations. It's an all day invite. I haven't been to a job interview for 10 years and in all honesty, that was for my current job which really was my first 'proper job'.

All of a sudden I think I'm punching above my weight, and I'm panicking a wee bit!

Do I wear a full suit? I know I have to do a presentation- do I just use the basis of some of my other lectures and shrink to fit or do I rewrite an entirely new presentation?

And I know you can't answer this, but am I mad to consider this? Am I fooling myself to think I can do this?

Any advice welcome!

Science departments tend to not notice much what people wear. Some still come for interviews in jackets and ties, other just a button down shirt. I find as a woman is always harder to dress smart and professional! I like to not dress like a man, IYKWIM, but don't want to be too girlie...Confused. depending on weather I go for some nice dress trouser and a nice fitted sweeter and a spiffy scarf or just a funky button down shirt (so they will remember me Smile. But my impression from more business oriented disciplines (e.g. management, economy, etc) is that is all expected to be much more formal and smart. I wouldn't worry about make up if you don't don't use it.

Oh dear. I rushed the presentation a wee bit-nerves getting the better of me. Trying to re-group for the interview.

Don't let perceived mistakes in the presentation upset you for the interview.

Thanks Foggy, I'm trying to focus on the interview. It wasn't terrible, just a bit jittery and rushed.

Turns out I know a couple of the candidates. So, I know the competition is stiff.

All interviews are today-so I'm hoping that we will know this evening or tomorrow.

Appreciate the support.

Well, it's all over now!

Interview was MUCH better than the presentation. It's a question of whether the other candidates were better than me on the day! Hopefully I'll know one way or the other next week.

It's been great having you guys here-especially because I haven't told many people IRL, so a huge thank you to everyone who shared their experience and egged me on!

Feeling quite disheartened. I've not heard anything. It's been a really long week and it looks like it's going to drag on into next week.

I've had a holding email to say there has been a delay in contacting all candidates due to unforeseen circumstances, but it's over a week now. Is this normal or are my expectations too high?

I've got a rate evening out with DH tonight and we wanted to be able to celebrate/commiserate over a bottle of something special but I'm just going to be tense and morose!

Bear in mind that Brexit is having a huge impact on universities.

My own university has just put a number of appointments on hold and is deciding about cancelling others/cancelling construction work. Our forecast income for next year is down by millions, due to lost contracts and withdrawals of self-funded EU students. The UCU is anticipating involuntary redundancies at many universities, particularly those with large exposure to EU funding/EU students.

No it's not unusual. You may be 2nd or 3rd on the ranking, but they can't say No to you until the job's been accepted or rejected by the first ranked candidate. And that person may may not be in a position to accept or reject straight away.

And I know as an HoD, my time is very tightly organised. I've been in the position of not being able to telephone candidates until a day or two days after interviews because I've had back to back meetings stacked up.

It's one of those situations when no news is good news.

Unfortunately it may be Brexit related. My university has just imposed a hiring freeze Sad.

Hope you get good news soon and managed to enjoy your night out.

Thanks all.

Sad if it's because of Brexit.

I'll keep you posted, and yes, I had a lovely evening out despite the agonising wait-thank you Flowers
