Is there a North West/North East divide?

The North West and North East of England I mean. I know they encompass several counties but I wondered if there are some cultural differences as there are in Scotland. Also which do you prefer?

As someone in Cumbria I don't understand why you are all naming places that are "down south" when talking about the North West / North East.

But in answer to your question, we get on just fine with our neighbours in Northumberland.

I grew up in the North East and now live in Merseyside. There's no rivalry, except the odd gentle mocking of phrases.
And YES to the bread rolls thing. When I first met DMIL she asked me if I wanted a batch. I was like "a batch of what???"

I've only lived in the North East but tbh I love butter and potato pies so much. So few local delicacies can be vegetarian.

Not that I’ve noticed - I’m a Lancashire lass but was born in yorkshire - but have lived in Lancashire all of my life since the age of about 2 (45 now) and my mum’s family are from that side (Yorkshire). My grandad who has passed away now alway’s used to say I’m on the Yorkshire side as I’m a yellow belly? And always said my sister was true Lancashire as born in Lancashire and she was a Lancashire Rose

There is huge sporting rivalry between Manchester and Liverpool and we're only separated by about 20 miles. I'm just outside Liverpool and support Everton, as do many scousers. Liverpool are our main rivals of course but there is a long standing football rivalry between both cities. It can be friendly but on many occasions it hasn't been.

Thanks all. Interesting that there's so little divide/rivalry.

I think its because its an us and them type situation. My enemies enemy is my friend. We are united in our bitterness over the North/South divide so we don't have the energy for any sort of East/West rivalry.

Yes, this! Why would you think there would be a divide? Any rivalry is friendly.

Indeed. Game of Thrones was based on War of the Roses - Lannisters being the House of Lancaster and Starks being the House of York.

Culturally they are similar and the the rivalry between Lancs and Yorks is good humoured these days but it's still there. Just this morning I met one of the founders of my new gym (in London) and I mentioned visiting my father and where he lived. The response: "oh so you're from the WRONG side of the Pennines then". And then it starts....and goes on and on....

Isn't the East/West in Scotland the equivalent of the North/South? So Scotland just has East/West and England just has North/South, any more divides than that and everyone would have a problem with everyone!

I’m from the north east and Liverpool is very similar to Newcastle imo! Not much in the way of rivalry, we’re too busy hating Sunderland and occasionally the South
