NI Number - Apprenticeship Degree

DS1 is in Y13. It's been a fraught couple of years and but he's back on track with studies and has decided to apply for apprenticeship degrees for next year. Two of them require his NI number as part of the application process. His NI number never arrived when he was 16 and I never thought to chase it. The closing date is today. We've emailed them and they won't accept applications without it and they won't extend. On Friday (when he started looking at ADs) we did an online chat with the Gov.uk and requested a number and it's on it's way.

He's tried calling Gov.uk but it seems nothing can be done. Which is so unbelievably frustrating.

Only if he gave his employer the NI number - the OP never received it so they wouldn't have been able to give it to an employer.

So do you think he has an NI number, but just didn’t receive the letter when he was 16? Or do you think he may not have an NI number at all?

Years ago (as an employer) we were able to use a temporary number in the format TNddmmyyM with the dob in the middle. I doubt that would pass muster with everything being electronically filed now. Only a suggestion as a temporary workaround?

Thanks re the temporary one. Also thinking about him using DH's to submit. But they could think that shows initiative or it might be a complete no no

Temporary NI numbers are no longer permitted. Have you tried asking for an electronic copy of the letter he's been sent?

Says here (HMRC website)you can register for a Personal Tax account to retrieve your NI number from there. However, it’s been a while since I registered myself, so not sure what info you your son will need to do this.

Have a quick look on a bank statement back when you were getting Child Benefit, it might have baan quoted as the reference.

He's called twice. He was indeed asked to register for a Govt Gateway account and that failed.

His NI number might be on his Child Trust Fund paperwork, as the reference number.

We haven't had Child Benefit for over 10 years. Different bank: account now longer active. Good suggestion though.

OMG I think it might be on his CTF paperwork after all. There is a number which could be an NI number...

Is anyone able to cross check their child's CTF number against their NI number, please?

Did you in infirm CHB if you moved. Because if you ever claimed CHB the NI number will be sent there. You should have chased if up when he didn’t receive at 16. You can’t be given NI number on phone, you need to download and complete that form.
All children who are awarded CHB are allocated an NI.
On bank account that number is the CHB number.

Obviously I should have chased it up. I know that now!

We stopped receiving child benefit and then moved a couple of years later so I never told them.

Sorry as this isn't what you asked but if he only started even looking on Friday, is it a good idea to rush to apply today, it's a huge decision and he needs to be happy with his choices - too many young people drop out of programmes because they are forced/encouraged into applying whilst still in school rather than completing a levels/other qualifications and taking a gap year. Dd did the later and she matured so much (no travel just working in hospitality). I know covid complicates things but don't rush him to decide

He is doing A levels in relevant subjects. He has known for a long time that he doesn't want to go to uni. He has been working hard at his 3 subjects and he's been interested in DAs for a while. He's just started looking. He has 3 to apply for in January. It just so happens that theae two have a very early application closing date

We had this problem when DS needed to apply for a bus pass and we couldn't find the letter he had been sent.

We rang and were told to apply for the personal tax account but were advised to do it via the HMRC app. I cant remember the exact steps but I know we managed to access it the same day - it was just a screen version of the letter they send out with the NI number on it.

It should be on child trust fund paperwork. Might say Unique Reference Number and be in format:

AB223456C

What do you mean "failed"?
Failed in what way?
Has he, or has he not, now managed to register with Gov Gateway!

On mine there is a Plan number and then a Unique Reference Number. Its the reference that matches my Dd's NI number
