Song lyrics that infuriate you

I'm sure this has been done before but I just heard Moonlight Shadow on the radio and it's set me right off. "4am in the morning"! A.m. MEANS morning, Oldfield, you oaf. It's tautological and really pissing annoying.

Also, Razorlight's woeful effort "I met a girl, she asked me my name, I told her what it was".

Share your annoyances so that we can all be enraged too!

Babe, by Take That. ‘Then a voice I once knew answered in a sweet voice.’ Yes, it’s a voice; you didn’t need to sing it twice.

Don’t get me started on how he’d pissed off for years, without a word of where he’d been, then expected her to take him back just because he’d tracked her down to her front door.

@BrunoMars

Now I love Wham! But the lyrics in Club Tropicana have always bugged me
'All that's missing is the sea....
Watch the waves crash on the bay....'

A verse ago there was no sea Angry

I always sang those lyrics as “between the city and the sea” which makes more sense.

'Clap along of you feel like a room without a roof...'

Or, as normal people refer to it, a ceiling

Yes!! This one does my head in. Spoils the song for me.

Creepy rather than irritating. The Time of The Season by the Zombies. Keep in mind this is a song about the Sexual Revolution in the 60s and the lyrics are about a man making love to a woman

"what's your name?
Who's your daddy?
Is He rich like me?
Has he taken any time
To show you what you need
To live"

Then it goes on about him wanting to use his "pleasured hands" and "taking her to promise d lands because "it's the time of the season for loving". Ok, so is the implication that he is asking whether her daddy is showing her sexual things??? I mean, gross!

Also those obscene almost panting noises in the background. I like the Zombies generally but lyrically this song is a fail

"when I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change, cause you're amazing just the way you are".

So you scrutinised my features and decided that I compare favourably to other women, whose faces you presumably would like to be able to rearrange? What a sweet compliment...

For creepiness - Oh Carol by Smokie:

Well if you're ready for this
When we started to kiss
She said "Hold on a minute or two"
Well naturally I knew it couldn't be me
I said "Baby, what's troublin' you?"
She said "I'm not sixteen
If you know what I mean"
So we sat and we talked for a while
When we finally kissed
You know she didn't resist
And I must say she did it with style

Horrible

For annoyance I get irritated by Ed Sheeran with her between his arms. I picture him like a zombie with his arms straight in front of him while she shuffles around. I also get stressed when he sings "Driving at 90 down those country lanes" - it's going to end in tears I tell you!

Yes another horrible one, a lot in the late 70s

@Drawmelikeoneofyourfrenchgirls

The Ed Sheeran song where he says ‘dancing in the dark, with you between my arms’ between his arms?? Should it not be in his arms? I always have visions of him dancing with his arms outstretched and her just shuffling in the middle. Makes me really irrationally angry

Yep, me too.

I believe its a list of references to events that occurred, in chronological order, from Billy Joel's birth to his 40th birthday, or something along those lines. I don't know why Doris Day gets a mention but Prokofiev is in there because he died in 1953.

I thought "We didn't start the fire" was based on the front covers of editions of a magazine. Not that I can remember which one now....

I can't agree that We Didn't Start the Fire is excellent... isn't it one big apology for American warmongering?"

I see your point, actually, but maybe I've been misinterpreting it all these years. I always understood it to mean that 'we' i.e. BJ's generation weren't the ones solely to blame, when criticised by the older generations; but maybe it is actually 'we' i.e. the USA. I'm off to look up the lyrics again now Blush

You could be right - either interpretation might work. But I think we're maybe being generous by assuming that it means anything at all. Doris Day and Prokofiev both get a name check and, as far as I'm aware, neither of them committed any really heinous atrocities, unless you count Que Sera, Sera.

OK.
Let it go in Frozen wouldn't have worked if they'd said "I am one with the wind and snow" because then they wouldn't have had a rhyme for "cry" in the next line. They're using an ABAB rhyme scheme rather than AABB.

Cherry wine is gorgeous, you can buy it in some places. I don't understand the hate for Babushka. If you don't know it's about a couple whose marriage has come to an end. He looks at the lonely hearts ads, and she puts one in under the name of Babushka, once they contact each other it reminds them both of the early days of their relationship. I think it's really romantic.

That’s the Pina Colada song Grin

Babooshka is a great song, but she didn’t sort the grammar, and it grates.

If I Was by Midge Ure.
If I WERE.

If I was...a wiser man
I would have known how to use the subjunctive

It Wasn't Me

The Wurzels did a version of this song. Now that’s an image you don’t want in your head.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Chasing Cars ... I love the song but 'if I lay here' is like nails down a blackboard. It's 'lie', you buffoon!

Don't agree with PPs about Up The Junction. Pure poetry.

‘We could laugh and party all night
And drink some cherry wine, a ha’

What’s cherry wine, when it’s at home?

Assuming that's weird don't have to take our clothes off' which is an 80a song , there was a drink called Cherry B around at that time

Billy Joel's otherwise excellent song 'We Didn't Start The Fire' where he sings 'England's got a new Queen'. England hasn't had a queen for hundreds of years. It would actually have been easier to correctly sing 'UK's got a new Queen' by thus avoiding the three consonants together - 'nd's'. Can you imagine the American uproar if a UK songwriter wrote a song about 'California's new President'?

The entire lyrics to Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke - vile, misogynistic and date rapey.

I remember in the latter series of Never Mind The Buzzcocks, where they had guest presenters, and Sara Cox was hosting. the subject of this song came up and she recalled a big promo poster that the ever-so-mature RT had requested be put up behind him saying "Robin Thicke has a big dick" and she had campaigned to change the 'has' to 'is'! I reckon she got that right....
