Looking at the Legislative Calendar...
Definitely can't get new justice installed before 3 November.

Makes little difference if Trump wins again. But, If Dems turn the Senate or even just generally trounce the Republicans across the board, it will be weird if the Senate pushes thru an arch conservative in Nov-Jan window, anyway. They might manage to do it anyway, but will lose a lot of political capital.

I half wonder if Roberts or Thomas or both could then do the honourable thing & retire to allow appointment of 2 new 'liberal' justices after January and restore balance to the court. Would be the most decent thing Thomas ever did. Stranger things have happened recently.

I just woke up to this news, very sad indeed.
If it’s at all possible, Trump will get someone elected into her place before the presidential election. For America that may well mean that Biden will not become president, because any litigation surrounding the election will now be decided by a much more conservative Supreme Court.
The future looks rather bleak from here - I really hope that I am proved wrong, but this feels like the beginning of a dystopian novel....

McConnell is already saying he's determined to get new Supreme Ct Justice in ASAP, certainly before January. That is true tragedy here. RBG was great lady who did terrific things, she had good innings. But the legacy of the 6:3 conservative:lib balance on the Supreme Ct will affect judgements for a generation or longer.

Very sad to hear - she was a great woman.

Sadly I don't think it would make any difference if she had lived til after the November election, as I'm pretty sure Trump will get a second term. He shouldn't, of course, and I would be very happy to be proven wrong, but I don't think I will be.

Truly worrying times. :(

Sorry that's 269 days, not 259. And we have 46 days left.

This is very, very, very bad news.

The Republicans are certainly going to put a justice through before the new senate/presidential term starts. (This is despite blocking a nominee in 2016, when Justice Antonin Scalia died 256 days out from the election. At that time, the senate leader said it was too close to the election. He has made it clear that he is a sheer hypocrite and will push someone through with 50 days to go.)

That means the court will shift very far right. And that's it for a generation. I'm not exaggerating.

If there is any contestation about the election, they will toss the ballots and put Trump in power.

There goes abortion access, gun control, healthcare, and keeping money out of elections. For 30 years.

It's overwhelmingly bad.

On a personal note, she was an amazing woman and an inspiration. That it happened on Rosh Hashanah is such a cruel irony. What a way to begin a new year. May her memory be a blessing.

On Rosh Hashanah too. Baruch dayan ha’emet.

She will be missed.

And no doubt the same Republican senators that blocked Obama's nomination in 2016 will be happy to wave through Trump's nomination even later in his presidency.

@BringBackDoves yes, the RBG documentary film was fantastic.

The US Supreme Court already has a conservative majority so the loss of the Great Dissenter is a huge concern.
