Ro Bucks for Roblox. Do you buy them for child?

Roblox has dominated dd life since lock down and tbh its quite creative, gets her to spell and write, play different characters, create outfits etc so I don't mind. But she's obsessed with getting robuck, ie real money.

It's the only thing she's passionate about so I was thinking for her bday of getting her some but in the context of this game.. Has anyone else?
Will it be a nightmare chaining us into buying robuck for ever more.. is it easy to buy them? Any advice?

My dd spends her pocket money on robux every month. We've set up a subscription for the amount we'd normally let her spend on it, but it's very easy to cancel the subscription (we had done back in January, but started it again in May).

If I would let her spend that amount of money on toys, which I would because it's her pocket money, then I don't really see the difference to spending it on robux. Both are things that will make her happy for a short amount of time.

My dc buy themselves robux every now and then with their own money, usually the 99p ones or £4.99. Then for birthdays/Christmas they get gift cards. Ds is 10 on Wednesday and he is getting i think a £20 robux gift card. They are both fully aware that the money essentially disappears into thin air, and when they go off the game they will have nothing to show for the money, they are fine with this! I would rather buy them robux then try to get them to play with a toy or something they have no interest in.

Occasionally. Sometimes it's part of their birthday/Xmas gift. My DM just gave them a bit of money for the holidays and they want to buy Robux. I've said that 50% can be spent on Robux, and then if they haven't spent it in September they can put the rest of it into their games.

DD1 is attempting to learn to write code for games and wants to start making YouTube videos about Roblox (has been asking for 2 years now - she has her YouTubers she follows) so it's one of her main hobbies. I spend my money on my hobbies, including gaming, so I have no problem in theory. In practice she;d better have all her homework done to a good level and occasionally read a book.

My dd’s spend their pocket money on robux but I cap it each month (they have generous grandparents so get about a tenner a week Hmm ) so they are allowed a maximum of £5 across the whole month, unless they have done something particularly good (ie great reward card, or as a reward for something else etc) they could earn another £5 robux. Like pp said too much and they do not appreciate the value, too little and they can’t do much with it!

I pay for a monthly subscription for my son, but he does get gift cards for birthdays and Christmas’s. He loves it.

Like a previous poster my DS's pocket money is in the form of the monthly subscription and I do sometimes buy him extra too.

I find it easier to pay online now for the bundles. When DD first started playing it, we could only find the gift cards in sainsburys miles away. Handy to chuck in a xmas stocking or birthday card though.

My DD is obsessed with robux and we have (reluctantly) bought them for her.

My dc, 7 and 9yrs, only get it when they have pocket money or birthday money.
I have bought my ds a £20 gift card last Christmas.
I used to hate it, it seemed such a waste of money but its their money and that's what they enjoy and they understand that they are not buying a real thing.
They have so many toys and most of them never get played with so I guess they don't need any more.

I am also blown away by their imaginations. The things they create on Minecraft are amazing. I love to see the worlds that they come up with.

My DD got the premium subscription for her birthday in lockdown.

@thegirlwholived
What do you think is a decent amount then? Initially I'd like to get her a '' taste'' then increase for bday then perhaps this premium for Xmas...

Would £5 go far?
@ChilliBeanSauce how much is premium and what does it get them please.

I'd like to work up to some sort of Xmas crescendoGrin

@rightontheedge

Where did you buy the gift cards from?

Yy, Minecraft is wonderful!! It's hard for people to appreciate when have no interest.. I barely did and then dd kept showing me stuff... I love the Chinese world and music.

We went to natural history musuem recently and saw all the earth's minerals

And dd kept saying, but where is bedrock!!

And there was no bedrock!!

DS gets £5 a week pocket money and usually spends it on Robux. It's fine with me, it's his money.

Watching with interest - my daughter wants to put her pocket money towards Robucks but have said no wonder because it seems like an absolute waste to me. But maybe l need to be a bit more flexible.

Fish.. Personally I think there are enough good points on the thread to relent.

With dd one I spent loads on magazines just for the tat on the front that broke in 5 seconds and cost £5!!

It's really creative, inspires imagination... Do different things. I was reticent hence the thread, but now I'm really excited about making her dreams come true and with clear consouince... Although she will have to earn them a little...

I let mine spend homework reward money on it. Or I will negotiate chores or behaviours for Robux - the 5$ bundle only. I choose my time, like the start of a weekend, never on Sunday Night. And they don't get to spend proper birthday money on it

I would just advise you to deal with the ending of a session at the start of it. I regret not insisting my son ask permission to log on and not setting good boundaries for non tech time to.be maintained. This summer has been a free for all.

My children get £5 a week on Roblox. Like other posters have said I was unhappy about it to start with, but they get so much pleasure from it. They buy new outfits for their avatars, new pets, fly potions, more building options. It’s taught them to budget, count, spell, type. The houses that DD can build on Bloxberg are amazing. They play ‘houses’ with their friends and FaceTime at the same time so it’s the equivalent of playing dolls with your friends.

We do here, probably about £20 a month between 2 kids on digital currency.

Adopt Me is the only thing they play together, so it’s nice to hear them playing. My youngest went through a phase of being scammed through trust trades...that caused some tears Hmm good life lesson though (eventually...)

Yes we've let things slip a little too; during lockdown it seemed just pointless to battle over it when there was sod all else to do.

I am in charge of when their laptops are unlocked; generally it's an hour between school and tea time, and one day at the weekend for 3-4 hours (not that they spend that entire time on them). Saturdays are no laptop days!

Thanks for the tips. I think dd has also had trade issues.

My dd can sit there all day! So we know block the site and say its down and not working.
I've been working through lockdown as had dh so as you say... It seemed cruel to stop her.
She has worked so hard and come so far in lock down and we do get them active in other ways... Go bike riding, frequent picnics, trips to London. I tend to block the site 4 days a week then when it's '' working '' use that as leverage to get more work from her.

Bloxberg...I think she was building pent house flats once? I wonder if that's Bloxberg!!

We definitely need to get it back under control once school starts though. I'll have to do it gently though... And ease her back into normal...

Get them Animal Crossing instead. Similar stuff but they have to make their money by doing stuff on their island so you don't have to spend actual money.
