Fruit salad recipes pls

I know that this is a stupid question but what do you put in a fruit salad? I don't want to spend loads on fruit and must last a couple of days in the fridge. So any fool proof recipes will be greatly received.

@hippohector the baby is teething... Perhaps some for him after all? Wink

Fruit is chopped. Out of date oats are doused with yogurt. Hoping for a successful weight loss. I appreciate no one really cares but I weighed myself tonight. Not as bad as I thought so feeling optimistic already. Will double check at MILs though just in case I have dodgy scales.

Chop a load of fruit (whatever you like) into a bowl and cover with freshly squeezed orange juice and copious amounts of Cointreau. The alcohol preserves it.
Maybe not one for the baby tho Grin

If you do the overnight oats using unsweetened apple juice instead of milk or milk substitutes it will last for a couple of days in the fridge sealed in a Tupperware type box.

If you are planning to use the fruit salad to have on yogurt then I would just have fresh raspberries or sliced strawberries . Just as they are. Nothing better at the moment, support British farmers!

I'd just chop it fresh every morning,
DH usually has strawberries, banana, and greek yoghurt for breakfast.
I like apples, grapes, strawberries, and raspberries.

I buy a big tin of yellow grapefruit and a tin of ruby red, mix together in a large bowl and keep it in the fridge. Serve up using a slotted spoon and pop any type of yogurt on top (today's was Ski Smooth). Delicious and really wakes you up. I leave the juice in the bowl but as the amount of actual fruit gets lower, I siphon off the juice as a drink, always leaving enough to cover the fruit.
Fruit from the shelf has come on a lot in recent years. I don't much like soft berries still though. But peaches, pears, grapefruit, mandarins are great, either tinned or in cartons. With yogurt for breakfast or a 10-cal jelly for lunch. Great for finger food but remember to cut it up well. And make sure you don't pick up the syrup ones by mistake.
Even if not the best for losing weight, they still count in other useful ways.

And on the days when it's really really needed, the ambrosia tinned custard and rice pudding and squirty cream are on the same aisle.

Another idea - watermelon slices actually keep pretty well. Great with yogurt and mint and chilli flakes. Alternatively with Parma ham! Or with feta and black olives in you do it for lunch.

Sorry I know this isn't what you asked for but you never know, you might like it.

I'm rather keen on an apple and mint salad for breakfast at the moment. I just core and slice a couple of granny smiths, toss in a mixture of lemon and orange juices, then stir in lots of chopped fresh mint. I'll have a little dish of Greek-ish yoghurt too.

Bircher muesli/overnight oats would definitely make a better breakfast. Just soak the oats in milk (or a milk substitute, almond or coconut milk are delicious) overnight to soften, then you can add whatever you fancy in the morning - yoghurt, grated apple, fresh or frozen fruit, nuts, spices. Cherry and almond milk is a good combination.

Fruit salad doesn't keep as well as fresh fruit so it is better to make it just before you eat it. Cutting the fruit speeds up decomposition and some loss of vitamins, particularly antioxidants, C, A and E. Frozen fruit doesn't always look pretty but freezing preserves the vitamins so it can be better than fresh.

Berries, cherries, nectarines and peaches are in season and at their best at the moment. One of my favourite combinations (although it is a bit more autumnal) is figs, blackberries, black grapes, pomegranate and coconut, sometimes I add rosewater but maybe not for breakfast. Peaches with a raspberry coulis (a word rarely heard this century Grin) is a good "tinned" option out of season, if you are on a budget.

The "eat a rainbow" advice for fruit and veg is a good principle. Different coloured fruit tend to have different nutrients.

@SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness

Not sure why you felt the need for such a rude response.

A lot of people aren't aware of the amount of carbs in fruit, and simply think it is the most healthy option and you can have unlimited amounts without it causing weight gain etc when that isn't the case.

The OP was looking to fruit to help with weight loss, so it's only helpful to point out that eating lots of fruit might hinder that

When you make the syrup add a couple of strips of lemon peel. Gives a lovely lemony taste but not too strong.

I personally hate green apple in fruit salads, especially if the skin has been left on. Yes, there is fibre in the skin, but it I dont like it in there. As someone else said, banana and apples both go brown by day 2, so i only use them in a fruit salad if its eaten on day 1.

I love tropical fruit in them though or berries. Mango, pineapple, kiwi and a passionfruit mixed in. Yum Grin

OMG, fruit has carbs! Who knew? ffs

OP - I just do a plastic tub with a couple of tins of fruit in juice (never syrup), at least 1 to be orange or mandarins, & add some fresh chopped kiwi, mango, grapes etc. I have it with plain greek yoghurt. Maybe granola too. Apples best chopped fresh.

@TerenceToo

Overnight oats are brilliant and so simple.

Pour oats into bowl. Cover with yoghurt. Add fruit/nuts. Stir and leave in a cover bowl/box etc overnight.

In the morning you'll have soft oats/yoghurt/fruit

@Sofasogood1 that's another good point. I have frozen fruit which needs using up. I have oats too (gluten free) but don't know how to make over night oats.

@wowfudge what do you use? I have Purition powder which I could add. Didn't think of that. Might be worth a try.

I'd also recommend bags of frozen fruit op. Really easy, just whack some in a bowl the night before. Cheaper than fresh too. I often have berry mixes but you can get all sorts. Never goes brown!

I love how you ask for a simple fruit salad recipe and in response you get a posters telling you to have something different for breakfast!

At this time of year I’d be using nectarines and lots of lovely berries, given how plentiful and tasty they are. If you have some, chopped mint is a nice addition. But I think it’s best just to cut the fruit as you need it unless you want to douse them in a sugar syrup as suggested by a pp. Personally I’m not a big fan but just prefer a squeeze of citrus.

In autumn I’d move on to apples, pears, plums, grapes and maybe some dried fruit too.

Tropical fruit salads are always lovely in winter when the local fruit is sparse.

Greek yogurt is great. I'm going to contradict myself re going for low fat options and suggest FAGE Total fat free Greek yogurt. So low in calories but packed full of protein and thick and filling. A spoonful of Mornflake Oatbran is good to chuck in too.

Greek yoghurt is a good source of protein and fat. I add protein powder to mine with fruit and I don't feel hungry till about now!

@Sofasogood1 thank you Grin the yogurt is just normal greek style. Mornings always seem to be difficult so I want something quick and easy. Lunch will be more what you describe with peanut butter saved for after dinner to curb that sweet craving!

Fruit and yogurt is of course healthier than two crumpets with butter and biscuits but it might not fill you up like a single crumpet with peanut butter! Or two bits of bacon and grilled tomatoes. Or scrambled eggs and a slice of toast.
Might not be dissimilar calories depending on serving size.

If you get yogurt at least don't eat low fat crap like a Muller light.

Protein and fat will fill you up.

Good luck!

Tin of peach slices
2 apples, peeled or not, your choice, sliced.
1 banana sliced
1 kiwi peeled and sliced
A few grapes halved.

If the juice from the tin doesn't cover all the fruit, throw in some apple/orange juice.
