Surely the best corner of the Mumsnet, all are welcome here and if seen this for the first time, join us, you'll be glad you did. This project is ongoing, and a friendlier more supportive bunch of folk you couldn’t wish to meet. We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

A bit of background
We knew her time left with us was short, but the news of Zombie’s death on January 30th was still a shock, we send so much love to her family and her many, many friends who love and will miss her greatly, we hold our happy memories of her very dear. Bless her.

Just before Christmas, Zombie donated funds to Woolly Hugs and together we hatched a plan to develop an ongoing project with her, which she loved, to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care.

So glad we could establish Candy's Hugs with her and thanks to you wonderful people achieve her ambition of seeing it all well underway before her death. Her legacy of Candy's Hugs will be one of love and strength, of friendship, learning and developing crafting skills, of creativity, of coming together to show compassion, support and give and receive comfort, Such a beautiful inspirational woman. How lucky we were to know her. X

Raising a glass or two to the fabulous Zombie, we go on together Gin

We have several previous threads now, have a look at the Woolly Hugs topic.

Zombie was a bright and beautiful woman so we chose a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give hugs and comfort as she went through treatment. She had it with her at the end, we were so glad to know it still gave her love, big woolly hugs and comfort.

If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

We have help for the complete beginner here…. And all on this thread are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our next collection dates are October 28th and then January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch. All welcome over there.

We start this new thread having sent out 46 Candy's Hugs to wonderful women, extraordinary, thank you.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

46 is amazing! Such a shame that they're needed in the first place but hopefully they bring much comfort.

Lots of love to everyone who is making these happen Flowers

book Yes! She left earlier today, thankfully without starting a parking war with our lovely neighbour yesterday who had the audacity to park in her parking space! By parking space I mean the bit of our close that she leaves her car on. She wanted my husband to ask them to move it because, in her opinion, they should know that's where she parks. My poor husband has been tearing his hair out over her.

I put some music on and had a little kitchen disco after she'd left 💃

I'm not anti-in laws btw, I got on really well with my father in law.

Evening all - from Italy! Having a cheeky 2 nights away for half term - so nice to just be the three of us and no work distractions

Full of warm woolly hugs as my latest ones have made it to Facebook. Isn't it so lovely to be able to enjoy what we we do, and know that someone else will get something out of it as well?!

Now wishing I'd brought my hook with me. DS and DH are both snoring away - it's either backlit kindle or sleep...

Morning!
I saw your lovely squares diamantegal .
looking out at grey, damp outside , so enjoy Italy.
When I was away abroad last year I went to the local craft/wool shop and asked if they had crotchet hooks - size 4 please. She brought out hooks for making fine lace - I needed a microscope to see the end Shock - I backed away with apologies :)

book some years ago my Mom did an evening class in crochet, she'd never done it before and had always been a knitter, and all she ever used in the class was small hooks and crochet cotton. It looked far too fiddly for me but she made some really lovely lacy pieces although it's not something she's done since.

I know. I'm sorry. I promise to do many squares when I return as a form of penance (not that it's any hardship!).

Although we went to Burano today, and having seen all the lace making, I'm now feeling a little inadequate. Fortunately I have plenty of red wine to make myself feel better...

If it makes you feel any better, said wine is being drunk from a tooth mug in a darkened hotel room while not taking to DH in case we wake DS up. When are they old enough for separate rooms?!

Report
MadisonAvenue · 20/10/2017 08:41

We finally booked separate rooms for our sons last year diamantegirl, they were 19 and 16 and we went to LA and Vegas. In LA they were in an adjoining room and after a few days we had the door between the rooms unlocked. The youngest was knocking each morning to use our bathroom as his brother wouldn't get out of their's. In Vegas we were offered a room upgrade for something like $10 per night so we went with that as we'd just booked the basic rooms. The boys were on the same floor but just a bit further along the corridor. Went into our room, very nice, decent view. Five minutes later there was a knock on the door and in walked both sons. They looked and then one said "our room's better than yours!" It was! It was HUGE! Youngest was still coming and using our bathroom though...

diamante - oh the glamour! :) - I have two DD with a bit of an age gap , so they went into an adjoining /connecting room when DD1 was 11 and DD2 was 4 . Luckily both solid sleepers, so DD2 went to bed and was well away before DD1 needed to go .

That worked well then book
We wouldn't have dared put our two in together when they were younger, it never used to take much for one to wind the other up and the arguments to start. Thankfully they get on really well though now.

How's your grandson enjoyed his first half term at school?

Evening
well, finally got around to doing some Candys, to join the sad, lonely square from weeks ago in petrol and grass green.
Just about finished all the special squares for other projects, and other bits and pieces , so full steam ahead now , before Chernobyl kicks in !
Madison - it wasn't a deliberate plan, but yes, over the years it has worked well, and they are very good friends now . DGS has come on in leaps and bounds, Just another week to half term- he is getting so tired. He is the one coming out of school looking as if he has been dragged through a hedge backwoods Grin

I love that colour combo book really cheery

Today I've been joining these squares for a little hug. It's the first time I've joined squares so I'm pretty chuffed. I'm not sure how to border it though - do I just do a round of "granny" all the way round?
