'Germaine Greer can no longer be called a feminist'

This appears to be mainstream opinion among young people. Our fucked up universities now employ 'safe space marshals' i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2017/10/25/01/45A4A9FE00000578-5013379-image-a-6_1508889824115.jpg in case people say things that offend the deemed status quo.

"Greer is now just an old, white woman who has forced herself into exile. Her comments are irreparably damaging, reflecting a total lack of regard for trans lives. Thinking what she thinks, she cannot be a prominent feminist any longer. She no longer stands for the same things we do"

It's not quite clear why someone who appears to be a 19 year old, er white woman, thinks that 'old, white woman' is an insult. But there you go.

I'm assuming the safe space job is parody?

Hmm, what is a safe space marshal? It's a person who marshals safe space.

OK that's clear then!

''Just an old white women.'' Fuck off to the far side of fuck with that attitude. Just how 'intersectional' is that brand of feminism? Who is it for?

No, not a parody, basically if they don't like a speaker they may ban them or take 'regulatory steps', which include but are not limited to the attendance of a 'safe space marshall'

www.standard.co.uk/news/london/kings-college-slammed-for-patronising-and-problematic-safe-space-marshals-paid-12-an-hour-to-police-a3669151.html

This chap worked as one and describes his duties:

uk.linkedin.com/in/scott-hunter-25568014b

"Working part-time while studying, duties include attending at-risk student events and ensuring that the Union's Safe Space policy is maintained, reminding speakers and attendees of policy, noting and recording breaches of policy and dealing with student complaints."

No safe space marshals at my Uni that I know of, and I would have been told.

I don't know who died and made this 19 year old the sole curator of the Book of Feminists, but I need to see her criteria for inclusion to see whether I bother to continue to call myself a feminist or simply change it to Women's Liberationist, which would be more factually correct anyway.

I've started using the old Women's Lib term because feminism has become such a meaningless dog's dinner of a nonsense. I'm really sick of people half my age telling me that feminism has to include men.

just an old, white woman

The only group it is now safe to discriminate against and disparage.

So Germaine isn't a feminist because some still wet-behind-the-ears brat says so. Give me a break.

Germaine is a feminist goddess. Those who disrespect her aren't worth the shit on my shoe.

Leaving aside the lack of critical thinking, I'm shocked at just how badly written that Varsity article is.

I don’t know, it’s possible to disparage and dismiss using ‘pale, male and stale’ pejoratively and unthinkingly. (Yes, I understand why it’s used as a shorthand, but I disagree that thinking in shorthand is to be encouraged.)

What a bunch of arseholes. As if they would be enjoying their liberal freedoms today without people like Greer doing some major heavy lifting in the past.

What the hell is going wrong with universities at the moment?

Age is an advantage for men and a disadvantage for women. Charitably, maybe that's why she's confused. She'll find out. In time. Of course by then no one will listen to a word she says.

"Do we really want to drive LGBTQ women away from feminism because they do not believe they are truly wanted and respected here?"

What an assumption that is. What about the lesbians/gays who agree with Greer? Terrible article. And to start a 'feminist' article with 'old white woman'; I despair.

As a cantabrian (auto correct wanted to put cantankerous for that - I plead guilty) I am truly shocked by what this article suggests about the current admissions process of at least one Cambridge college. They have started admitting morons. There is no other word for it. In my day this young woman would not have been at Cambridge. She can’t write, her grammar is dreadful, and she is an idiot.

The author doesn't appear to have noticed that Germaine Greer's academic field is in fact in English literature, not in feminism.

Admittedly reading The Female Eunuch these days is a different experience from reading it in 1971. It's perfectly possible to engage critically with Greer's ideas on lots of things, she's an academic after all so debate should be her life-blood. However, probably best not to work as a live censor and, as far as I can tell, fail to read challenging works, as training for academic debate.

Well, apparently not for old people. So bloody rude and not very sisterly in the feminist sense.

This is why I dislike intersectional feminism it is only intersectional as far as it suits and seems to involve putting other women down if they disagree. I'd say that was well out of the bounds of feminism.

Germaine Greer represents me and my feminism far more than that disparaging 'critique' but then again what do I know I'm only an old white woman with an education and experience and Germaine is only an old white woman academic who has fought the patriarchy most of her adult life and written many fantastic eloquent books on the subject. I mean she only managed to become a Professor of English - who does she think she is?

''Just an old white woman'

Lovely eh? Just lovely Hmm. Very inclusive. Very egalitarian

I remember Germaine Greer being interviewed on Newsnight about her views on transwomen, and Kirsty Wark put it to her that some transwomen find her views hurtful. Her response was along the lines of 'well so what?! People get hurt all the time. Try being an old woman for fuck sake!' Grin Hopefully she's pissing herself laughing at these utter muppets

As an old white woman I could actually power London with my anger right now.

How dare this person talk like this about someone who basically did much of the foundation work that allowed young women to have a view at all?

I find the view peddled by this young woman offensive. Where does my white 40 year old feminist arse complain?

The irony, of course, is that the writer Eve Hodgson is currently a young white woman. How does she not see that one day she'll be an old white woman, and that her words will have made it just that much easier for the people around her to see that as a category beneath contempt?
