I just saw this shared on Facebook and thought it would be of interest here. I don't think it's been posted already.

It's very well reasoned and would be great for directing other MPs towards.

Excellent blog. I can't believe these words are coming out of my mouth (or out of my fingers on the keyboard) but I would actually consider voting Tory for the first time in my life if this man was my MP. At the moment, I'm thinking that, if a general election was called, I would have to spoil my ballot because there is just no party which is representing women's interests.

Round of applause for David TC Davies (as you have to call him, to distinguish him from the Brexit bloke)

Bloody hell I thought you were telling me David 'Brexit' Davies had written an excellent article on this..... I was rather shocked!

Good grief. I wonder if he realises the utter shitstorm that's about to crash down on his head?

Good for him. This isn't a party issue though. I think Brexit man is Davis rather than Davies

Wow, that is well-reasoned and sane. I think it is good that he asserts men and women both need same sex privacy; it is not just a women’s issue. Good comparison with body building and anorexia too.

I feel exactly the same way. If the Tories get behind this kind of thinking I won't just vote for them I will campaign for them having never ever voted for them before in my life.

Wow. I am VERY impressed that he has managed to cover so many of the issues, so clearly, logically and concisely! (I would have ended up wittering on for about 10 pages trying to cram everything in from my head...).
That would be really hard for anyone to argue against, surely.

got confused with Philip Davies there and had a massive moment of, hang on, are we the bad guys? then realised it wasn't thunder twat.

Ugh, he's a climate change denier and voted against equal marriage. I fucking hate that this ONE ISSUE puts us on the same side as scum like him.

Well done to all the feminists who have done the legwork to point out how this issue impacts on women and girls. It's a good blog and as he is a bloke people may listen.

It's going to happen though isn't it - sometimes - I know very little about this guy, but it's completely feasible that we might hold the same opinions on the national curriculum, or pensions or the national health service.

I worry about this idea that if someone holds an opinion you disagree with, that all their opinions are bad. Sure, it's an indicator that you should examine what their actual position is before declaring you agree with them, but it's not necessarily excommunication time.

I've just sent this to my MP.

That's brilliant. Really concise and sensible. I've also sent it to my MP and asked for his thoughts on the issue.

I think the problem with it coming from the Tories is that the TRAs are trading quite heavily on people’s desire to be liberal, open and diverse, but without understanding that one of the liberal tenets is freedom but that you should not do harm to others. The question of harm has been less well articulated for fear of being branded transphobic. The problem with it coming from Davis, is that his views may just be dismissed as conservative and retrograde, without engaging with the weight of his argument.

And to an extent, there is a conservative element to the idea that biological sex matters, if the person arguing it also believes that there are inherent hierarchies embedded in the sex roles of male/female. However, the sex roles are what we mean by gender, and the feminist view I think is that gender is a social construct, not that different sexes don’t exist and should not be protected.

So the fundamental premise, that different sexes exist and should have certain rights protected (to same sex space), aligns in conservative and feminist thought. It is going beyond that basic premise that viewpoints differ, because feminists would see sex as the basis of oppression, whereas conservatives would see it as a natural order. I think.

It is excellent. It keeps things simple, has a broad scope, and yet is nice and clear. However, following comments by others up-thread, do read up on David TC Davies before you decide how to use this:

I found a piece from his local paper touching on the issue

'He's a tory' is a sufficient argument for some.

I think a few of us could do with supporting what he has said in his local paper comments as the trans people seem to have turned up in force to trash him.

This is a huge issue. The majority of the people speaking out about this are right-wing / very Christian not groups I would usually align with! The problem with this is it does very much frame the debate as nice liberal lefties against right wing fundamentalists, which effectively shuts down anyone who might want to speak out.

Report
busyboysmum · 10/10/2017 11:56

Well we need some nice liberal lefties on side as well then.

Surely some of them can think outside of the box and see the danger this poses to women.
