Maajid Nawaz LBC- feminists are abandoning ethnic minority women and their causes for first world problems

Anyone listening?

He cites a story about a 17tr old black Muslim girl who was forced into an apology by Muslim fundentalist men online for being filmed dancing in the streets (twerking) while wearing a hijab.

He suggests that no feminist outlet commented on the story and that in general feminists are focusing on first world issues (he mentions the transgender issue and then Emma Watsons boobs and the academic who made a joke and was then fired? I don't know that story) and not engaging in supporting ethnic minority women in this country enough.

Is there a link to the original story? I've not heard of it, and haven't come across it before.

He is a man. He doesn't get to tell women how to do feminism.

If he wants to use his position to bring more attention to issues affecting ethnic minority women, that's great. Feminists of all ethnicities will applaud and support him.
What he doesn't get to do is to use it as an opportunity to demonstrate his manly superiority over those silly women and show us how he can do feminism better than us - he needs to look at the politics around his doing that.

I am entirely prepared to have my feminism critiqued by other women. But not by men who are oblivious to the privilege with which they speak.

And taking a story about a Muslim woman being treated badly by Muslim men and turning it into a story about feminists being crap stinks of patriarchy to me.

FFS. What everyone else already said.

Lesson #1 in how to be a good ally: don't tell the women they are "doing it wrong"

Fuck off with your directives to feminists.

I can't find any links where he said what he is alleged to have said on the OP.

I haven't found much reporting of it at all apart from the Mail, the Record and Breitbart and Nawaz's own site.

I do not agree, not unsurprisingly, with the view that not being a woman disbars a person commenting on feminism.

Report
BigDeskBob · 12/03/2017 15:18

I doubt that he was really outraged by this, otherwise he would be too busy telling Muslim men why they were wrong to have any time to criticise feminism. Its just him using this woman to tell other women their concerns are unimportant and therefore they should shut up.

I've just realised I'm repeating thecountess, but far less articulately.

I don't subscribe to any social media outlets but has this story been commented on by any feminist websites or feminist bloggers in the UK?

If not, then he does rather have a point (assuming he did actually criticise feminists for their lack of response- I can't find it)

I'm sorry but why in hell should he "call feminists out" for their lack of commentary on anything? I genuinely don't understand.

Lass, the OP states he's commenting on his own radio show on LBC. Unless they print & publish transcripts as he broadcasts, I doubt you'll find the published comments you seem to think is the important part of this thread. And I'm with countess on this too.

That's the problem with not having a "head of feminism" - there's no one to update the official list of all the shit men to to women blog.

Well first of all who are you quoting with "call feminists out"? I did not say that.

Secondly I have not so far found anything where he has actually criticised feminists beyond what the OP alleges he said. He has criticised his own community for what that happened.

Thirdly has any feminist commentator made any comment on this incident?

Out of interest, does anyone know how Maajid is fighting this issue?

LBC publishes transcripts. The most recent one I found by him was about failure to integrate.

Straw man. Never said anything of the sort. Has there been anything said about this by any feminist commentator?.

I see no one on here has actually said anything beyond the how dare this man speak out.

And if he said what he is reported to have said in the original OP then exactly right how dare he.

It wasn't well reported.

Any criticism of abusive Muslim men will automatically be 'called out' as

a) racist
b) anti-Islamic

Intersectional Feminism plus unwillingness to offend have combined to silence any dissent.

What BigDeskBob said.
I dont subscribe to Breitbart or the Mail. Until there is a Feminist Central to report this kind of thing I cant see how we are responsible for not responding to it.

There are loads of comments standing up for her in the newspaper comments and his Facebook page. I'm sure some are from feminists.

The first thought that came to my mind was that the reason he didn't criticise the abusive muslim men was because he would be accused of racism and Islamaphobia.

Who is "we" ? I asked if any commentator who defines herself as a feminist had commented on it?

It seems to have had millions of views on YouTube before it was pulled yet seems never to have generated no comments by feminist commentators beyond those who might be agreeing with him on his Facebook page?
