I am gutted too. My birthday is 13 November so we were going to make it my birthday weekend celebration. There would have been no better way of celebrating my birthday than at Feminism in London!

If anyone finds out why it has been cancelled let us know.

Thats not good. I wonder why. The last one was so successful.

Is it the economic climate? ie people who had previously donated time/space/resources are no longer able to do so, or that it would only be possible to run the event if they charged a ticket price that they knew would be too high for most people to manage?

This has just been posted on fb:

There are a few different reasons, LFN will be making a longer announcement soon. But there are loads of other things we can be doing, our Feminars go on all year round and we need more help to organise them and more suggestions for topics ...and speakers. There were also plans to make Reclaim The Night more of an ongoing thing, with educationals and fundraisers throughout the year - again, we need help with that! LFN also want to build more links with other organisations to campaign against the cuts. Again - we need more women to get involved. Rather than going to a 1 day conference, which costs us about £12k to fundraise for and takes a year to organise - why not do stuff for the revolution all year round! Help us! Join your revolution! Make things happen today, tomorrow, every day

What a bloody shame. 12k is not a lot, in the great scheme of things. :(

Maybe they had to pay a deposit or something for the venue and couldn't get the money together. But then, wouldn't they have just opened booking/appealed for donations before cancelling?

Was it a free event? Did they have to pay the speakers and for catering etc? 12k seems like a lot for 1 day so i can see their point about distributing resources elsewhere.

Am :(

Can we do something feministly collective that weekend anyway? Gather somewhere to plot the overthrow of the patriarchy meet and discuss?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/03/2011 14:04

Darlene - no it wasn't free, there was a sliding scale of payments last year, from £5 to about £20?(iirc) depending on your income. But then about 1000 people went, so you would think it would pay for itself more or less. No catering.

YES to doing something ourselves though :)

Whaaaaat? Rubbish!

Perhaps we should organise a FeMNists in London conference instead? We could hold it at our house!

Report
darleneconnor · 25/03/2011 17:45

Yes something doesnt make sense if it cost 12 but1000 people went, paying up to 20 pounds.

I think we should definitely do our own thing. And I wasn't joking about potentially using our house... although if a thousand of you want to come we'd definitely have a problem!

I know, I have been mentally measuring the house to work out how many MNers we could fit in! Pushchairs etc might be a bit of a problem though (unless we chuck all the kids in the garden to fight play nicely).

Where did you find other housemates? Who are these people who don't hear 'We met through a shared love of literature, feminism and trolls' and run a mile? Or do you have a cover story? 'We met at work'

'we met on the internet' - weird
'on Mumsnet' - you don't actually have any children. Super-weird.
'on the Feminism topic' - aaaargh get me out of here!!!!

they have to be lying about it.
